I changed the password but the failure still exists.  I also used another
keyboard with no success.

Startup, login as root - ok, login as user - ok, try to login again as
root - login incorrect...

Any other ideas, or is there some type of  log I can check?

I could always reinstall from scratch, but this just makes no sense.
