Has anyone run into this problem?

Last, I was able to successfully run this command on one of my RHEL5 systems:

        yum provides *lapack.so

Here is a transcript of that session:

# yum provides *lapack.so
Loading "security" plugin
Loading "rhnplugin" plugin
rhel-i386-client-suppleme 100% |=========================| 1.2 kB    00:00
rhel-i386-client-5        100% |=========================| 1.2 kB    00:00
rhel-i386-client-workstat 100% |=========================| 1.2 kB    00:00
rhn-tools-rhel-i386-clien 100% |=========================| 1.2 kB    00:00

filelists.xml.gz          100% |=========================| 556 kB    00:00
filelists.xml.gz          100% |=========================| 3.6 MB    00:00
filelists.xml.gz          100% |=========================|  17 kB    00:00
lapack-devel.i386 : LAPACK development libraries

Today, on the _same_ system, the command fails:

# yum provides *lapack.so
Loading "security" plugin
Loading "downloadonly" plugin
Loading "rhnplugin" plugin
rhel-i386-client-suppleme 100% |=========================| 1.2 kB    00:00

rhn-tools-rhel-i386-clien 100% |=========================| 1.2 kB    00:00
filelists.xml.gz          100% |=========================| 3.6 MB    00:00
Error: failed to retrieve repodata/filelists.xml.gz from rhel-i386-client-workstation-5
error was [Errno -1] Metadata file does not match checksum

Thinking that there might be some cruft in yum's cache, then tried this:

# yum clean all
Loading "security" plugin
Loading "downloadonly" plugin
Loading "rhnplugin" plugin
Cleaning up Everything
# yum provides *lapack.so
Loading "security" plugin
Loading "downloadonly" plugin
Loading "rhnplugin" plugin

I've tried these commands on several RHEL5 systems and it fails on all of them. The systems are at 5.2:

# cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.2 (Tikanga)

The problem occurs for a number of variations on the command:

  yum provides *m.so
  yum provides *blas.so
  yum provides *gcc

Has something changed at RHN or in the yum repo? The yum packages on these systems haven't been updated in a long time.

Thanks,
Carl
