Thanks for highlighting these Yum issues. I'd like to get as much of
this info as I can into our Knowledge base.
It looks like several people on the list have hit the bug mentioned (448012)
For that issue, we've put together this kbase:

For the issue with this error:
"Error: failed to retrieve repodata/primary.xml.gz from rhel-x86_64-
server-5
error was [Errno -1] Metadata file does not match checksum
"
I am still looking into this.
Also, I can confirm that we have definitely had some availability issues
recently with RHN. We have put several changes into production to
alleviate these, but there are still some 404/502/503 errors. A fix is
going into production on Jan 20 that should resolve this. There are also
some issues with download speeds on RHN, and we are looking into options
for improving that.
