More iPod/iTunes questions....

With help from this forum I'm getting close to a very workable setup.
Robin's script works like a charm and Nick's advice re iTunes "File =>
Add Folder to library" and unchecking the "Copy files to iTunes Music
Folder" has got all the MP3s into iTunes without duplicating all the
files, however I have one last problem and I wonder if anyone has been
here before.

Is there any way to elegantly update the iTunes library from the MP3s?
I found one CD that was badly mis-tagged so I fixed the FLAC tagging,
ran Robin's script that correctly identified it as the only changed set
of files and re-generated the necessary MP3s, but now how do I get
iTunes to refresh it's library? I tried just adding the same folder to
the iTunes library again and it looked to be re-reading the folder (it
had progress info on screen) but when I looked at iTunes library
afterwards it hadn't changed anything (and it also, thankfully, hadn't
created 2 copies of everything).

Right now it's looking to me as if the only way to get the updates into
iTunes might be to delete the entire iTunes library and reload it from
the external folder. Has anyone done this before? If I delete the
entire library from within iTunes will it go out and delete all my MP3s
or does it only delete files that are in the core iTunes music folder
and not files that have been included via "Add folder to library"?

I hope people don't consider all this to be way off topic but there do
seem to be a fair few people wanting to shadow their Slim Devices music
onto their iPod so it seems like the answers to these questions would be
useful to others.
