Siduhe - this is exactly the behaviour I get. I've just re-scanned my library, having pointed SlimServer to my temporary directory with the one compilation album. I also over-rode the default "Various Artist" name with WHATEVER, and ensured that the compilation grouping option is on. In the slimserver web interface I get the follwing: Browse Albums : "Pop Jr by WHATEVER" - this is correct! Browse Artists : nothing displayed at all Browse Genres : Rock - this is correct, how if I click on Rock, nothing is displayed. For both Browse Artists and Genre, when nothing is displayed, the the heading said "1 album with 24 songs by 0 artists." HOWEVER, using SoftSqueeze (I don't have a Squeezebox yet), all display behaviour is correct. Browse Artist correctly lists WHATEVER, followed by the individual songs... Whats up with that? Seems there is some inconsistency between the web interface and softsqueeze/squeezebox, as you pointed out. I'm at work at the moment - I can't remember exactly how I tagged these files. Have to wait till I get home.
