Unless you have your music placed in /artist/album folders with
cover.jpg album art files, you probably won't get album art.

This is fairly trivial to prove as the FLAC files can be decoded to
.WAV and compared to the original .WAV files. Provided there is no
padding added for tagging purposes, the file checksums match - which
means the files are identical down to the last bit.

This is, of course, the definition of lossless, and any lossless format
which does not pass that test is broken and *not* lossless.

There is a processing load to decode a lossless file, but it's very
light and can be handled by CPUs much, much weaker than the one used in
the Squeezebox. FLAC, in particular, is designed to be very easy to
decode, with most of the processing work put in the encoding step.

The "compatible with iPod" requirement is what changes things here.
The most natural lossless format for the iPod is Apple Lossless (ALAC)
but this isn't handled in SqueezeCenter quite as nicely as FLAC in that
it must be transcoded to something else and you can't FF/REW within the
track.

ALAC/iPod will also tie you to iTunes, and getting cover art from
iTunes to SqueezeCenter can have a few problems.

Since the iPod's earphones and playback hardware hardly justify
lossless files, many use AAC (an Apple lossy codec) or MP3 which will
also save iPod battery life and storage space.

The best thing to do is maintain two parallel libraries, one FLAC and
one MP3, and keep them synched using a freeware program forum member
Robin Bowes developed, flac2mp3.pl. Point iTunes at the MP3 library
and let it do its thing and point SqueezeCenter at the FLAC library.
This way any tag changes or additions you make in the FLAC library are
reflected in the MP3 library automatically. With the space you save
going to FLAC you'll have more than enough empty for a parallel MP3
library.
