It's not like the loudness wars.  That is lifting up quiet parts of a
song close to the loudest parts of the song.  Track Replay gain is just
a method bringing songs to a similar volume level for ease of listening
and avoiding clipping.  Unless you are playing the same album and using
track gain you shouldn't have any problems with it.  For critial
listening of Albums then you are right and Album gain is the way to go.
It is like radio and it's done so that you don't have to mess with the
volume all the time. But it doesn't compress the track.

Yes that is what it's for. Random play and playlists.  Album gain is
Audiophile gain and it keeps Albums the way you want them to be.  I
think we are pretty much in agreement except  the loudness war comment.
Hopefully companies will start mixing and producing a quality product
again soon.
