I've never used Tag&Rename but I hear it's good, so I'm surprised it's
giving you different info from mp3tag (which I use and know is good).
I've read in these forums that it is possible to choose your iTunes
settings carefully to keep it from touching your tags. But in my limited
experience with iTunes I've found the choices are either (a) limited
mucking with tags or (b) wholesale hosing of tags.

The only real "solution" I found before ditching iTunes entirely was to
make all the MP3s read-only. That also seems to keep iTunes from doing
its own "think different" ways of handling replaygain, album art, etc.
which has its downsides as well, because you want that if you have an
iPod. One option might be to keep a pristine read-only copy on one
computer (and a backup on another disc), and then have a different set
that iTunes gets to muck with to its heart's content. That assumes that
you still have a pristine backup somewhere, or at least could regenerate
one via mass transcoding from FLACs or something.
