Sorry to be late getting back to you.

I set up a test bed directory with just a few subdirectories and music
files to do a little systemaatic testing. I tried removing the
ALBUMARTIST tags, and what I found is that that the behavior is just
the same. Namely, if the ALBUM (i.e., title) tag is the same, then the
files are grouped together as one album no matter what directory they
are in, if the ARTIST (i.e., track artist) tags are the same.

So, multiple "Greatest Hits" files in different directories appear in
the Albums list under a single album, and all the tracks are gathered
there. But the trick is that the artist names have to be the same (for
instance, "Larry") for all. If there is an ALBUMARTIST tag, that one is
used. If not, then the ARTIST tag is used.

A saving grace, however, is that if there are multiple artist names
(for instance, "Larry;Curly", where the ";" is a separator character
recognized as such by SBS), then only the first name seems to count. So
if you have some files where the artist names are listed as
"Larry;Curly" and others where they're "Curly;Larry", those files will
be gathered under separate album listings. (I have only tried this with
the ALBUMARTIST tag, not the ARTIST tag.)

Yes, it happens with just a single artist.

I believe that if you try making the ARTIST tags the same in your
"Greatest Hits" album FLAC files and rescan, you'll find they've become
one big happy album.
