I'm going to take back my comments on Fedora. I did a clean install of FC2 on my laptop, and I have to say it is pretty nice. I've never been a big fan of Unix on the desktop, but the Fedora release is so nice with GNOME 2.6 that I might change my mind.
Some nice things: up2date supports yum 2.6.7.x kernel is available. The only thing that I have found that is weird is that starting nautilus from the desktop doesn't have a toolbar, and none is available. Besides that small glitch, it is so far working perfectly. An FC1 install with messed up dependencies has been giving me a bad impression of fedora. The Sarge install failed to run X, and since ease of install and use is a high priority and almost all my machines have NVIDIA graphics cards, it is out until that is fixed. The transition from RH9 to Fedora was less than smooth for me, but with a couple releases under their belt, maybe things will start to settle down. On another topic all together. I upgraded my cable modem to Charter's 3mbit service, and I have to say it pretty much rocks (besides the fact that Charter was having routing problems all weekend do to the thunder storms). I've been getting some amazing trasfer speeds from the Fedora mirrors. I can safely say I am getting the full 3mbit download speeds. Amazing considering when I first used the internet in '93 our entire campus was jerry rigged to the NYSERNET via an ISDN line. I thought it would be much longer before we saw this kind of residential service, but one thing I've learned is things tend to happen much faster than you would ever expect in this industry.
