Well, some of the more popular MUDs are so far advanced from the ROM codebase (or whatever codebase), with so much custom content, that I think a lot of people don't even see any point in trying to run their own MUD, when it would take so much work to get it to a point where people would want to play it (this sentence is Faulkner-esque in length). I know I gave up.
