Actually, the poster fell into the Latex trap that \epsilon stands for the 
lunate epsilon, as faithfully represented by the tool we tend to use here:

$ utftex '$\epsilon^{i}$’
ϵⁱ
$ utftex '$\varepsilon^{i}$’
εⁱ

But maybe that snippet was really meant for human consumption only…
