Leaving aside the exercise in extreme pedantics[1], this choice might be OK.
But it can also be extremely inaccessible.
That superscript "i" might not be found in the same way that the same variable
might be found in a different part of the document. My browser doesn't
recognize that as an "i" if I use its find tool. But it might be found if
MathML is used to render an equation that contains $\varepsilon^i$. The idea
that you might render SVG but make the LaTeX searchable is not realistic.
You know the other great thing? We're getting into questions that aren't in
scope for setting policy. So they are increasingly academic.

[1] That's not a game worth playing. Leaving aside the \epsilon vs \varepsilon
thing, your rendering is more reminiscent of $\varepsilon^{\mathsf{i}}$ than
what Michael shared.
