Dave, you are absolutely right about that. Of course it's nice (but
hardly ever possible) to have the train curve in the opposite
direction. This visual effect is also a factor in choosing steam
engines. An engine with a two wheel trailing truck will look better
than a four wheel version (which will bring up some considerations with
AM's new 4-8-4--that's a mighty big engine!).
The problem I have with tall layouts (coming from a height impaired
guy) is the lighting of them, as well as some other factors. Being a
photographer who has photographed a layout or two and one who has
visited many just to see, I have issues with lighting which is
compounded by having a tall layout. I remember visiting a S layout in a
basement that had 7' ceilings; although the layout was about average in
height, he had built mountains that were close to ceiling height. The
layout was lit by a couple of bare bulbs, so visually and
photographically you couldn't see much. Most everything was either in
the glare or the shadow of the light. Remember the laws of physics in
regard to the fall-off and evenness of light as we move a candle away
from a subject! In this case the builder did the best he could, but
the effect of this layout, 'the stage' was just not there.
