Your comment about the 4 x 8 is quite revealing.   Never thought of it that 
way because I never had a 4 x 8 layout...

I also agree with supporting the manufacturers we have or new ones that are 
essentially S only (like Jim King).

 By the way, I'd prefer to see our S-dedicated manufacturers expand and 
succeed than have to face the competition of an Atlas, Athearn or whoever --  
a company with no real stake in the future of S, but which could do a lot of 
damage by dabbling until they quit.

In terms of attracting new model railroaders to the fold -- in any scale --  
the key dimension remains 4 x 8. What can you put on a sheet of plywood for 
your first "learner" pike?
