First, I have seen the same car delivered to the same customer on two occasions
a week apart. Clearly part of the issue deals with how far the trip between the
source and destination is, and where else the car might go in between
(sometimes the car is in captive or defacto captive service and just shuttles
back and forth).
Secondly, how often do you operate? Assuming you don't run with the same crew
every day (real time); how likely are the operator's to really notice that they
delivered this same boxcar to this customer last week (when it's really been
several weeks or months). Reasonably alternating among several (3-5) cars of
the correct type should provide enough variety.

For those of you who try to operate their layouts prototypically:
I have read several times that the average turnaround time for a
freight car is one month. In other words, the typical freight car
gets loaded 12 times a year.
Consider this scenario:
You have a warehouse that gets served by the local five days per
week, Monday through Friday. Each day two loads are delivered, and
the two empties are picked up. For example, on Monday, cars 1 and 2
are delivered. On Tuesday, 3 and 4 are delivered and 1 and 2 are
removed. On Wednesday, 5 and 6 are delivered and 3 and 4 removed,
etc.
In a full month, you could have as many as 22 work days. Since no
car would be seen again until the next month, you would have to have
44 distinct cars for each such customer.
If each operating session represents the next working day for the
local, you would go through about 30 sessions until you could re-use
the same car.
Even with only a few customers, you would need quite a fleet of cars,
so I'm sure most people use something less than a 30-day turnaround.
It could also get to be a paperwork nightmare.
How do you handle this situation?
