Bob and NCE users, FYI:

NCE has come out with an upgrade to their radio cabs that provides much better
reception. My cabs now act as surely as if they are plugged in to the cab bus.
If you check the NCE site, it provides info on how to get the upgrade
installed for $25. All you need to do is mail in your cab: takes about a week .

I will, after finishing my roundhouse and starting some decoder
upgrades, get back to getting the RR back to operations. As I've
mentioned before, I use the Rail Ops program which is quite common in
this area. A friend came by to help me get started. He took one look
at my yards and said 1/3 of my cars had to go. As a tear developed in
my right eye, he refined that statement saying they had to go off the
layout, on a car float (we don't use ferry in Texas) or to a new
  --unbuilt yard.

Last weekend I operated on a very nicely designed HO layout twice the
size of mine. We had nine operators working the various trains. The
gentlemen owns 1400 freight cars indexed in his Rail Ops car roster.
More than half are in a very large storage yard that are rotated into
service as needed. During the evening most cars seemed to move once or
twice during the 3-4 hour session. This layout had been on the Pro Rail
tour that was hosted here a few months ago.

So far every layout large or small seems to have trains that top out at
about 20 cars. I'm not certain if that's due to time limits or length
of sidings. If you have one or more large yards, chances are you have
smaller yards where most of the switching of industries occurs.

As a side note, when I was operating last weekend the owner had the NCE
radio controlled throttles. I liked the ability to access an engine
without plugging in the throttle (I understand that Digitrax is
introducing their version now). The downside was that the engines often
didn't respond to commands precisely (don't know how to explain that
better but their were some issues with control). We also had one
operator drop a throttle and it temporarily became three pieces but
seemed to stay working after that.

Now off to pack for Lowell!
