Ed,

It is only hard because like the chicken or the egg problem, someone has to
see a lot to get it in their head that S is something they could do too.

Howdy Bill......I have an interesting thought to relate that proves
something (not sure what) about S scale's lack of popularity. There
are two other model RR guys (HO) living within a few blocks of the
mighty NYC. The three of us form a cluster of layouts quite a distance
from other layouts. All of us are friends and we all like to have open
houses whenever there is a convention in the area -- about four or five
times each year. In the early daze, I described my layout as a "large
S scale layout"....yadda yadda....and got numerous visitors to see the
sights. As time went on, I eventually learned that the other two
nearby HO layouts were getting more visitors. So I inquired as to why
visitors did not drive another couple of blocks to see the NYC. The
answer was: "Your layout is S scale and they have no interest in S
scale." So I changed the description to emphasize NYC, CMRI, JMRI,
transition era, beautiful scenery, etc. and deleted all mention of S
scale. No scale at all was included in the description. Attendance
immediately increased and is now more or less the same as the other
neighboring HO layouts. So Allen Keller's experience is pretty much
the same as mine -- S scale is a hard sell. Cheers....Ed L.
