By 1976 I was contemplating getting out of Lionel 0/027. I had built an
All-Nation scale box car kit and the contrast between scale and what Lionel
offered back then was more than I could bear. I had thought of O scale, but
prices for locomotives were high even then, much more so today. I sent for a
Heimburger catalog and the possibilities surprised me even back then. It took
some time for me to make the leap because I wasn't convinced I could build
anything.

In 1987 I sold my Lionel stuff, getting from a dealer probably about half of
what I would have if I had bothered to market the stuff at train shows. On the
other hand, I was rid of it and with the 800 dollar war chest started buying S
scale stuff. The first was two AM FP-7 units and eleven cars split among
hoppers, box cars, and gons, all for $235.00. I was happy, and the dealer who
had tried to sell it was happy. That was it. I have no regrets.
