Thanks, Ed for the latter. As to the former, thirty-five years accumulation of
O SCALE is not only a major financial investment (I have long since stopped
thinking about what I've put into them over the years, but it would almost
certainly buy a house in many areas) but an insuperable emotional investment,
finding some of the more unusual items and all the work in building and
modifying so many pieces.

I am content to dabble in many secondary aspects of the hobby: traction, On2,
On3 (which I tried to stay out of for many, many years),
British light railways, quite a few of which cannot coexist in the same space,
so my sticking my toe (more like a whole foot if not most of a leg by now) into
S scale is one more way to go nutso.

I've just spent the afternoon setting to rights an Sn3 PFM RGS #20 that someone
had done a real job on. Happily I already owned one in mostly decent condition
(would have been nice have had a mint one, but this is what I've ended up with)
to use as a guide in the reconstruction. Interestingly, the two #20's have
some minor variations in detail, which causes me to wonder if there was more
than one run.
The most fun with it was discovering that someone had monkeyed with the
cylinder mount and removed both a brass spacer and a machined fitting to both
hold the superstructure above and the pilot truck kingpin below was missing
(those who own one will know what I am talking about).
I am still somewhat amazed that I soldered a 2mm screw (the 10mm length I had
on hand was happily just long enough) into a piece of brass cutoff rod in my
junkbox (someone's lathe practice, I guess), cut it to length, drilled and
tapped it 2mm for the kingpin screw, and it all works, pretty much. For using
nothing more exotic than a Dremel tool and fifty-five years of experience in
the hobby, I impressed myself.
