My experience, as I described previously, pretty much mirrors that of Dennis.
Having assembled two All-Nation box cars convinced me that Lionel was no place
to be. O-scale would be great except for the space limitations and currently
the higher prices for specialized resins kits. They're high enough in S,
understandably so given the limited runs and the amount of work required to
produce them, but they're really topping out in O scale. Locomotives as well
can be pricey.

I am taking a close look at old S-scale kits to see whether I can bring them at
least closer to current standards. If I cannot, I'll probably assemble them
regardless and hope that the old four-foot rule holds up. I have three or four
Perma-Bilt kits but will never use the stamped roof, a failed attempt at
realism. I use the wood roof, plastistruct t-strips and create panels out of
cardboard or styrene. That gives a much better appearance than does the old
metal roof.

I started as a Lionel operator, migrated to 2-rail 'O' scale, "blew a fuse"
with necessary compromises over required space in 2006, and I am now happily
recovering with 'S' scale.
Premise of question is a good one. I saw 'S' scale at Jersey City Terminal in
late 1980's early 1990's. Was alittle intimidated by lack of ready-to-run
items and lack of confidence in my model building skills. Alot has improved in
'S' scale since then. However, situation is still not ideal. For example, I
wish 'S'Scale Loco & Supply was fully stocked (i.e.could use a AM Pacific
detail kit).
Maybe we shouldn't be trying to attract first time hobbyist, but instead
concentrate on those looking for a change?
