Jeff,
I am a NY Central fan who switched from "O" to "S" five years ago, and have
most of what I need now, and about to start building a medium-sized layout. You
may not want to wait 5 years, which is understandable. Most who like "S"
modeled in a different scale previously, and are undaunted by having to kitbash
& build things for themselves, or wait for it to be produced or reappear.

I paid more for some "S" locos & rolling stock than I sold my "O", but also
bought some for less. Estate sales are one source for "S" scale, so are
conventions and regional get-togethers. Don't overlook "American Flyer" lists
for American Models and S Helper Service diesels which are easily convertible
from hi-rail. Also let some dealers know your "wants", and you may get a call
down the line.

With past decade of ready-to-run locos & rolling stock, kitbashing suppliers
have decreased. However, new ones are filling the void. It is often difficult
for limited run manufactures to meet their minimum numbers. In the past there
was a "gang of 100" who would purchase enough of a new item (even if they
didn't need or want it) to get it produced (sometimes selling items at a loss
afterwards). Pretty noble! Some went on to start new companies to manufacture
and import models (S Helper Service, River Raisin, etcÂ…).

"S" scalers are a committed & resourceful bunch, who will find a way to survive
well into the future.
