Hi All:

Been working longer hours lately, also have been involved putting together
orders for S scale supplies, equipment, and other nic-nacs. So, not a lot
has been accomplished at the workbench.

BUT...

I learned a little TIDBIT of info that has really got me pumped:

One of my really-really favoritest KC roads was the Kansas City Terminal. It
was a switching railroad. As a lad in KC I saw their switchers all over
KC... AND... we used to drive right by their neat looking engine facilities
on Southwest Blvd every few days or so. Plus, it was one of the LAST
vestiges of my KC railroading memories to bite the dirt. That is, their
switchers were STILL in their original schemes and puttering about town...
just like they used to do when I was a kid... until finally, they too,
succumbed about a decade ago, eventually being acquired by WATCO.

>From the onset of my S scale foray, it has been a given that KCT power will
be on my layout. HOWEVER... as with all things S scale: There are
complications with that simple plan.

To wit:

The KCT SW1200's begin to arrive on the property beginning in June of '64.

Hmmmmm... that's toward the later end of my early-mid sixties era timeframe.
Still, though, definitely "do-able". They also had two NW2's, 60 and 61.
(The 61 was rebuilt by EMD into an NW2m in 1952.) BUT... (and it's a big
but)... pictures reveal the EMD's had full length handrails along the side
sills. As we all know, our beloved SHS SW/NW's have steel underframes. Ever
try drilling those easily? Okay... cross EMD's off the KCT "GOTTA' be
modeled NOW" list. Definitely later.

They also had Alco's. S-2's. Railmaster makes an S-2 kit! Sooo... order
one of those little jewels in... we'll go that route. Money spent...
package arrives... whoa... it's a flat kit. TIME consuming. Cross THAT off
the KCT "to be modeled NOW" list, too! For SURE later.

Well... it's later folks... and there's still no KCT on the horizon.

Things are looking grim for the KCT.

THEN...

Just the other night, I learned that little tidbit I mentioned above:

It seems that only the 61 was rebuilt. The other NW2, #60, ran out its
service life as a sure 'nuf EMC NW2... to be scrapped in 1964. Now, the KCT
NW2's were both aquired in 1939... this would make them "Phase 1" NW2's.
Seeing as the 60 ran its life out as it came from the factory... it SHOULD
have NO handrails on the sidesill. I have unearthed ZERO pictures of #60.
Therefore, it is open to speculation as to whether or not #60 was
retrofitted at some point late in its life with full length handrails.

See where this is heading????

Let me spell it out for you: KCT #60 was a Phase 1 NW2. KCT #60 ran its
life as an unmodified Phase 1 NW2 (aside from conical stacks). SHS makes a
Phase 1 NW2. I have an undec SHS Phase 1 NW2. I also have S scale KCT
decals ON HAND.

I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

:-)

Ah, the joys of discovery!
