Hi John; I think Ed's point is that new Athearn shells may not be available at all.
"Back in the day", Athearn "Blue Box" diesel shells sold for around $3.00, which made cutting them up much easier - although that $3.00 ca 1976 would be almost $14.00 today. I'm not sure why dec. or undec matters, especially if someone is doing a conversion and will need to paint eventually anyway.
