The job I work most often weighs cars often. (Mainly scrap metal.)
When paid by the ton, the need arises to weigh the car. In our case, we will
receive an empty in, then when loaded, it's weighed so the correct amount
for shipping can be charged. Flat rate shipping doen't need to be weighed
"in theory"... but then you can pick up some grossly overloaded cars... so
they get weighed and if overweight for the car's data, they will be sent
back to the shipper to reduce weight.
Typically, if the line has customers that ship by weight, the line will have
a set of scales at the yard, or at one of the yards on down the line.
Also, we have weighed cars coming over the line when told to do so.
Modeling a set of scales is a great way to add "operation" in a very small
space.
