There was one of the C&O 2-6-6-2's at S Fest, asking $1000; it didn't last two
hours after the doors opened.I was tempted myself, as it was really attractive
and at what looked like a great price, but I simply couldn'timagine what I
would use one for.
That has been the nature of model railroading as long as I can remember: that
someone will announce aparticular prototype and sit on it, deterring other
possible importers or manufacturers from doing it, oftennever actually
producing it but ruining the market. This happens because too many times in
the past (inmore than one scale) someone offers a new product only to find
another manufacturer/importeris also ready or nearly ready to offer the same
thing. HO perhaps can absorb such duplication, but S scaleis such a small
market no one can afford to risk it.
