Were I to put guardrails on the turntable rails or the pit rails, or both, I 
would still taper the rail heads. SHABBONA's turntable is as much a 
conglomeration of trial ans error as it is anything else, and the tapered rail 
heads serve as a final "self-alignment" feature, if the original alignment 
isn't too far off to begin with.

Having come upon mis-aligned railheads at mainline track speed, I can tell you 
they make a terrific noise when you go over them, even if the train stays on 
the track. That being said, actually derailing a train takes considerable 
effort.
