John,
Bob's not designing his track plan.  He's trying to put it on his web site so 
we can all see it.  If you reread what Bob said, he's starting by drawing it 
with pencil and paper.  All the fiddling he's doing is to convert it to a 
digital image that he can upload.
 
I started my professional life as a draftsman, and always drew my layouts that 
way, but it sure saves one heck of a lot of space to get rid of the drawing 
board and do the design on the computer, which I need anyway.  From an 
ecological standpoint, I'm proud to say that I've saved hundreds, maybe 
thousands of erasers (cute little things) by switching to electronic drafting 
:o)
