If any of you recall the one of two entries in the recent NASG contest
you will recall a bascule style bridge. As I recall the model builder
mentioned using the causeway bridge that connects the mainline to the
island of Galveston. just an hour's drive from here.
If it's any interest to anybody, that bridge is being removed this week
and will be replaced with a much longer span. I'm not certain what will
be the replacement but it will be movable to allow water traffic to
pass. It has been a choke spot for many years and is the only rail link
to the island, although at one time I understand there was rail-barge
link. My understanding is that they've allowed a 72 hour window to
remove the old bridge and install the replacement. Unfortunately
covering this with a camera won't be easy since a parallel highway
bridge is already heavily patrolled.
I do have a copy photo of a Zephyr train that was probably touring the
area crossing that very area. At one time the causeway handled two
lanes of car traffic, the railroad and an interurban line.
