Perhaps Don Thompson will weigh in with the definitive answer, but my recollection is thatthe SHS couplers were specifically designed for the ore cars. That they also work for certain other applications is frosting on the cake: for instance, they were just what I needed for myPenn Heritage (ex-Steam Depot) 44-tonner, where the Kadees would have projected too farbeyond the pilot.
