As someone who is relatively new to S but who has worked extensively in HO, I'm 
actually pretty impressed by how consistent S scale equipment is, in terms of 
axle length, coupler height, etc. I found HO products to be all over the map in 
this regard. Perhaps it's because there are fewer manufacturers in S, but 
everything - even brass - seems to have the correct coupler height and my NWSL 
P:64 wheelsets - which came with one axle size - seem to fit just about 
everything. In some cases, I've had to file down the points on the axle ends or 
clean out a sideframe a little bit.

A useful tool in HO - one I would love to see for scale S - is the Truck Tuner. 
Reboxx offered one, as does Micro-Mark. Here's a link that explains what it's
