You can make changes in Excel but there are a few problems you have to
watchout for.

1.      All fields are tab separated but the first row has only one field;
you have to remove the extra tabs in an editor afterwards.
2. Excel changes true to TRUE and false to FALSE. You have to change
them back to lower case in an editor afterwards.
3. If you have to enclose some fields in quotes, Excel sometimes
doubles up the quote marks. In an editor you have to
change all occurance of "" to ".
4. If you are scheduling checks, EXCEL does not always save the fields
correctly. The easiest way to deal with that is to tell Excel that is a
text field when you import it.

Most all of these are Excel issues, not SA issues.

The file is only tab delimited. IF there are spaces in it, then it's for
example within the body text of the mails that should be send OR within the
subject of the mail. Not much to do about that.

How can we warn about the 2nd check? It could well be that you no longer
need the original check and just are re-configuring. Allowing several checks
within one entry is something that we don't want to do. Our idea is that
each check can have it's own alerts; and if you add several checks to one
entry this is no longer the case.

I have a couple of suggestions that I think would be simple to implement and
make SA into an even better product.

1. If you are attempting to add a second type of check to a single entry it
should warn you that you are about to remove the first check. Found that
out the hard way. Each type of check for a server (ex: URL, Drive Space,
etc) have to be a separate entry.

An obvious alternative to the warning would be allowing multiple types of
checks for each entry.

2. The servers.txt configuration file looks like it's Tab-delimited, but
that's not exactly true. I opened it up in Excel because I wanted to make a
specific change to all of my entries, and when I saved it back as a
tab-delimited file SA wouldn't work with it. I eventually realized that the
file has spaces in strategic places. I would *love* if the file were purely
tab (comma, or whatever) delimited so I could make massive changes with
Excel instead of opening each entry one-at-a-time in the GUI. Even better
would be a line across the top that told us exactly what the fields were so
there'd be no guessing. I believe others may have requested something
similar.
