I have seen all these issues before, but found that the information is actually easier to change in the Servers Alive package. The package has a Global change area that you can change several items very easily. If you are looking to change specific parts of the fields with Excel, it becomes more of a hassle than help.
The best way to approach most of this is to prepare the monitoring system with a good plan that is scaleable. As you grow, you will not have to make all these small changes to the file. The other best way to edit the file is to use a text editor, not Excel, and change the information you are trying to with Find and Replace. I have tried several other products and Servers Alive is the only one with an editable file that will work after you edit it. I am sure that the information is in this file in a specific format for many reasons I see that this would not need more clarification in the config file. First being that the interface allows you to add, change and do whatever you need, even though you cannot change sets of items at one time. I would *love* if the file were purely tab (comma, or whatever) delimited so I could make massive changes with Excel instead of opening each entry one-at-a-time in the GUI. Even better would be a line across the top that told us exactly what the fields were so there'd be no guessing. I believe others may have requested something similar.
