GPS joins the guide dogs

By Adam Turner

WHILE a guide dog can warn you as you approach a kerb, you can't ask even
the brightest canine to take you to the nearest ATM.

Trekker is a GPS satellite navigation system for the vision-impaired,
designed to complement a guide dog or cane in helping people find their way
around town. Like in-car systems, Trekker providers users with turn-by-turn
navigation - reading aloud the names of the streets rather than just saying
next left.

Produced by Australian assistive technology developer HumanWare, the
Trekker
system consists of off-the-shelf components: a HP 2490B hand-held PC, a
Bluetooth-enabled GPS receiver and a shoulder speaker. The system can be
worn around the neck under a jacket or on a shoulder strap. A sleeve slides
over the hand-held PC, which is fitted with buttons that in turn press the
touchscreen, allowing users to enter commands such as their destination.
They can also search for local points of interest such as hotels, cafes and
ATMs, as well as have these pointed out during a journey.

One of Trekker's strengths is the ability for users to study maps and
rehearse routes before they set off, making it easier for them to find
their
way around unfamiliar places. They can also create their own points of
interest using voice notes that allow them to record extra information,
such
as the location of steps or other obstacles.

Trekker relies on data supplied to HumanWare by global mapping specialist
NAVTEQ. After several years on the market in North America and Europe,
Trekker was launched in Australia late last year to coincide with NAVTEQ's
move into the Australian market.

While Trekker gives vision-impaired people greater freedom to travel,
HumanWare Australia's national blindness products consultant, Ramona Mandy,
says it's no replacement for her guide dog, Paisley.

The Trekker doesn't just give vision-impaired people information, it gives
them independence. That independence makes you more confident and more
employable. Some of my customers have said it's useful to be able to review
a route first from the comfort and safety of home by using the offline
browse, Ms Mandy says.

We call it a secondary orientation device, because it never will replace a
guide dog or a cane. You have to have good orientation and mobility skills.
Orientation is all about travelling safely and independently, so whether
you're a cane user or a dog user, you have to have good orientation skills
first.

An hereditary eye condition saw Ms Mandy's vision fade during childhood.

She learnt braille at seven, starting using a cane at 15 and was completely
blind by 25. Today she relies on Trekker, Paisley and a BrailleNote, a
Personal Digital Assistant with a braille keyboard and display as well as
text-to-speech functionality.

Vision-impaired people have access to about 5 per cent of information that
sighted people access through print. Having Trekker helps improve that
imbalance, Ms Mandy says.

Obviously all blind people don't live together in Blindville, so with
these
NAVTEQ maps we can go wherever we need to. It means I don't need someone to
take me new places for the first time. For example, I'm going to Perth for
a
conference later this year and I'll be able to find on my own where the
nearest ATM or pharmacy is.

NAVTEQ's global coverage also makes it easy for Trekker users to travel
overseas, says NAVTEQ's Australian business development director, Kirk
Mitchell.

We've been working with HumanWare overseas for several years now and when
we moved to Australia we had teams of mappers scouring the country,
recording information above and beyond that required by motorists so we can
meet the needs of customers like HumanWare, Mr Mitchell says.

Next year we're looking to bring out in Australia what we call Discover
Cities, which is a pedestrian-based product that will include points of
interest, such as all the exit points in railway stations. Directions for
walkways and paths in parks are to follow.

Re: [AI] How to type the simbols like Delta, Squire root of A and other such characters?

2007-10-07 Thread Jeet
Hi, thaught it may be of some use:
Introduction to LaTeX: 2. Typing Math

Introduction to LaTeX: 2. Typing Math

Text and math modes (review from Part 1)

TeX has three basic modes: a text mode, used for typesetting ordinary text,
and two types of math modes, an ordinary math mode for math formulas set
inline, and a display math mode, used for displayed math formulas. At any
given point during the processing of a document, TeX is in one of those three
modes. The behavior of TeX depends on the mode it's in. For example, certain
characters (like the underline or caret symbols) are only allowed in a math
mode, while others (like the greater than symbol) take on completely
different meanings, depending on whether TeX is in text or in math mode. (Try
this: write some ordinary text that includes the string From (which is often
generated by email software), and see what the symbol becomes after
compiling the document. In math mode, by contrast, does what you'd expect:
it serves as the greater than symbol.)
Text mode.
This is the normal, or default, mode of TeX. TeX stays in that mode unless it
encounters a special instruction that causes it to switch to one of the math
modes, and it returns to text mode following a corresponding instruction that
indicates the end of math mode.

Ordinary (inline) math mode.
Mathematical material to be typeset inline must be surrounded by single dollar
signs. For example: $a^2 + b^2 = c^2$. The single dollar signs surrounding
this expression cause TeX to enter and exit (ordinary) math mode.

Display math mode.
Material that is surrounded by a pair of escaped brackets (\[ and \]), or
by equation environments such as \begin{align} ... \end{align}, or
\begin{equation} ... \end{equation} is being processed by TeX in display math
mode. This means that the expression enclosed gets displayed on a separate
line (or several lines, in case of multiline equations). Longer mathematical
formulas and numbered formulas are usually displayed in this manner. Note
that the commands for entering and leaving display math mode are distinct
(\begin{...} or \[ for entering and \end{...} or \]), in contrast to the
ordinary math mode, where a single dollar sign serves both as entry and exit
command. This allows for better error checking. (This is a major difference
between LaTeX and AmSTeX or Plain TeX. In the latter two TeX versions, a double
dollar sign ($$) is used to indicate the beginning and end of display math
mode.
While the double dollar sign (still) works in LaTeX, it is not part of the
official LaTeX command set (in fact, most books on LaTeX don't even mention
it) and its use is discouraged. Use the bracket pair \[, \] instead.
)

Basic math

Elementary arithmetic operations:
The plus (+), minus (-), division (/) symbols have the usual meaning. To
denote multiplication explicitly (this is rarely necessary), use \cdot
(producing a centered dot) or \times (producing an x). The equal, less
than, and greater than symbols on the keyboard work as expected; to get
less than or equal, use \le; similarly, \ge gives greater than or
equal.
Square roots: Square roots are generated with the command \sqrt{...}. For
example, $z=\sqrt{x^2+y^2}$.

Subscripts and superscripts:
These are indicated by carets (^) and underscores (_), as in $2^n$ or $a_1$.
If the sub/superscript contains more than one character, it must be enclosed in
curly braces, as in $2^{x+y}$.

Fractions and binomial coefficients:
Fractions are typeset with $\frac{x}{y}$, where x stands for the numerator and
y for the denominator. There is a similar construct $\binom{x}{y}$ for binomial
coefficients. (The latter is part of the amsmath enhancements which you get
when using amsart as documentclass.)

Sums and integrals:
The symbols for sums and integrals are \sum and \int, respectively. These are
examples of large operators, and their sizes are adjusted by TeX
automatically, depending on the context (e.g., inline vs. display math). Note
that the symbol generated by \sum is very different from the cap-Sigma
symbol, \Sigma; the latter should never be used to denote sums. TeX uses a
simple, but effective scheme to typeset summation and integration limits:
Namely, lower and upper limits are specified as sub- and superscripts to \sum
and \int. For example, $\sum_{k=1}^n k = \frac{n(n+1)}{2}$. (Note that the
lower limit k=1 here must be enclosed in braces.)

Limits:
The subscript trick works also for limits; \lim produces the lim symbol,
and the expression underneath this symbol (for example, x tends to infinity)
is typeset as a subscript to \lim: $\lim_{x\to\infty}f(x)=0$. Here \to
produces the arrow, and \infty (note the abbreviation - \infinity does not
work!) produces the infinity symbol. \limsup and \liminf work similarly,
as do \sup and \inf (for supremum and infinimum), and \max and \min
(for maximum and minimum). For example, $\max_{0\le x\le 1}x(1-x)=1/4$.

[AI] Increaseing hearing problems among visually impaired community

2007-10-07 Thread Rohiet A. Patil
Dear list members,
I would like to invite your views and openians on the following.
Recently we all have read the e-mails from our 2 members mr. Manish Agarwal and
mr. shadaph husen. mr. Agarwal wrote that he is facing some hearing problem dew
to the robotic voices of our screen reader programs.
Friends, most of us are working in a computer bassed jobs. In this kind of
jobs, we have to work with headphones for around 7 8 hrs or more according to
jobs. I think that this might develop hearing problems in our year. Because
there is no option to use headphones during work hours. And the voices are very
troublesome. If we think to use other voices from JAWS, there quality is not so
good that we can understand each and every word. So friends, according to my
personal view, it may be a serias problem among us.
in one side we are saing that IT sector have opend many opportunities for the
employment of V I, but if this is the other side that affects our basic
capability of hearing then it is time to think on any effective solution on
this problem. There is no need to mention that if a visually impaired person
have no perfect hearing, then he has to face many problems in his/her daily
life. The problems may be regarding comunication or interaction or mobility
also.
Now you might think that why I am writing such a long mail and very deeply?
Because I am facing such problems in my life. I already have almost 80% hearing
los and I have to work in the above mentioned situation. I am affreding that if
I continue to work in the same situation, the problem may get develop.
Your views regarding this problems are welcome and esencial. Friends, sorry for
such a long mail, but it is very very important for all of us. So lets discuss
this issue very seriasly.
Thanks and regards

I would like to clarify here that the greater than signs were part of the

In situations where the original message is itself a forwarded one and

Re: [AI] Does anyone know?

2007-10-07 Thread dr.u.n.sinha narain
unfortunately not but little off the topic i am adding a new information:
-

Monday 01st of October 2007 India has ratified a UN convention to
promote and protect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of those
with disabilities
as also respect for their inherent dignity.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday deposited with the
UN the instrument of ratification of the Convention on the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities
adopted by the UN General Assembly on Dec 13 last year.

The adoption of the convention 'to promote, protect, and ensure the
full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms
by all persons
with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity'
followed four years of intense negotiations.

The convention marks a major step toward changing the perception of
disability and ensures that societies recognise that all people must
be provided with
the opportunities to lead a life to their fullest potential, the
permanent mission of India to the UN said in a press release.

India is committed to the elimination of barriers that persons with
disabilities face and the Constitution of India implicitly mandates an
inclusive society
for all, including those with disabilities, it added.
International News
Online Edition - New Delhi, India -Thursday, October 04, 2007

When I read the actual text. I found that the Minister said only two
things. 1. his positive approach towards the convention in respect of
india. 2. he talked about inclusiveness of society in indian
constitution but still I feel that Government of India along with its
state Governments should ratify their clear and a candid stand
regarding the rights of persons with disabilities and to their human
dignities instead of its stand for reformation of U.N.O it should
ratify its condition towards disables out and about caste and other
factors and thereafter it should submit its claim to be a permanent
member of U.N.O.

[AI] Get IE7 No Windows Genuine Advantage Required

2007-10-07 Thread Bharat

Either Microsoft is throwing a bone to pirates in the name of offering more
secure computing for all, they're desperate to get a larger Internet Explorer
7 install base, or they're attempting to eliminate the need to support for IE6
altogether. As of this morning, you can get IE7 without needing to validate
against Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA).

According to the announcement:

block quote
Microsoft takes its commitment seriously in helping protect the entire Windows
ecosystem. Security enhancements to Internet Explorer 7 include a built-in
Phishing Filter that prevents an average of 900,000 visits per week to known
phishing Web sites. Additionally, Internet Explorer 7 is the first and only
browser to natively support Extended Validation SSL Certificates to help
prevent online fraud.

Internet Explorer 7 makes it safer and easier to accomplish everyday tasks
online. It has a streamlined look and enhanced capabilities that make everyday
tasks - such as tabbed browsing that makes browsing multiple sites easier-
simple and fast.

The primary modification consumers will notice is the Menu bar is turned on by
default. For first time users, the first-run experience includes a new, easily
accessible Internet Explorer 7 overview, and the on-line Internet Explorer 7
tour has been updated to include how-to's on great new features like tabbed
browsing. This is an update to the availability of Internet Explorer 7 and not
a new version of the browser.

Also, for IT Pros, we've updated the Internet Explorer 7 Administration Kit
(IEAK7) to include the ability to create an MSI package for enterprises that
simplifies deployment for customers who prefer to distribute via Group Policy
or those who are not using a corporate update management solution such as
Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 or Software Update Services (SUS). IT
Administrators need only define a Group Policy setting to deploy a branded IE7
package to relevant units within their organization.

block quote end

The only caveat is IE7 will follow this model in English, German, Japanese,
French, Spanish, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese initially,
with other languages to follow before the end of the year.

You can
download IE7 immediately
with no need to jump through the WGA hoop.

Re: [AI] Increaseing hearing problems among visually impaired

2007-10-07 Thread Ramit Luthra
Don't use headphone if you care for your ears my friend.
Initially, I'd also started with headphones at my workplace but the
experience had been traumatic. Within 10-15 days only, I started
having constant pain in one of my ears and that very day I decided to
give it up. I bought my own speakers. And installed at my workplace.
Now you must be wondering that either I would be possessing a single
cabin for myself or I would have been complained by colleagues for
disturbance? But nothing went either way. I had a cabin of four
employees and to couple/triple it, other cabins were also connected to
it both at the frunt and at the back and that too the cabins were just
like as that of what we use to have in cyber cafe (without walls). But
nobody complained -- reason being the very low sound at which I used
to listen to. Ok.
So, it's my strong advice that use headphones occasionally -- not as
the only mean... It's better to listen a bit wrong at first rather
than to lose it later all together.
And lastly, you'll become habitual listening at a low voice within few
days... the same way that habituates a VC to these robotic voices
(that are not intelligible to sighted persons). After all, man
inherits his quality of adaptability as that of other species from
nature!

Hi ma'm
Oh I see. Was the greater than sign already there in the message? OK.
The easiest method of removing sign I know is
1. After pressing ctrl+F or ctrl+R, copy the whole message to notepad
2. Press ctrl +H to open Find and replace diolog box.
3. In find edit box,
a) enter , without the quotations of course.
B) In replace edit box, don't type anything, just live it blank.
4. Press alt +A to replace all.
5. cut or copy back to outlook express and send it.

Re: [AI] An oportunity at your door step

2007-10-07 Thread Harish Kotian
Hello friend

There is nothing new about it. It is called money circulation. It works
initially and runs for some months and a few years. Later on the outlay is
very huge and the promoters simply vanish and start the same in a new avatar
at our expense.

Ask yourself a few questions
1 Are they out to distribute money, cause they have it in plenty
2 Which business gives such fantastic returns
3) Check in person, if they have RBI approval for it. Check in your local
DNBS department of RBI if that business is approved by them.

I am writing to you all not to fall prey to such lucratives.

Anyway, this topic is off topic and let us not discuss on the list.

Harish.

An article about an amazing woman and a dear friend. Kanchan
Inner vision

By Jyoti Kalsi, Gulf News Report
Published: October 01, 2007, 00:41

This Ramadan is very special for Miriam Batliwala - because she has finally
realised her dream of setting up a vocational training centre to help
underprivileged
women take charge of their lives. The Women's Empowerment Centre and Network
(WECAN) is an extension of the D.M. Jariwala Orphanage and school in Mumbai
set up by Miriam's father 68 years ago.

Courses

After my father, my sister and I took over the running of the orphanage, which
houses 200 girls. We wanted to start this vocational centre, not only for
those staying in the orphanage but for all underprivileged women because we
believe in empowerment of women through education and wanted to provide our
girls with skills that will help them to be confident and economically
independent, says Miriam.

WECAN now runs courses in computers, fashion designing, catering, health care,
yoga, gardening, arts and craft and English language. The spacious new building
is filled with the laughter of young girls, who were otherwise destined for a
bleak future. But for Miriam the journey has been long and difficult. Her
plans suffered a blow when in 1998, the original 100-year-old orphanage
building collapsed. She and her sister have worked tirelessly to raise the funds
for reconstruction and expansion, personally supervising every detail. We
stood at the site through rain and sun and made numerous trips to small markets
in the back alleys of Mumbai to save money on plumbing and masonry items,
recalls Miriam.

Dedication

Her achievement and her immense optimism, energy and dedication to social
causes are all the more remarkable because she is visually impaired. But nobody
who meets Miriam would ever guess that she is almost blind. She is a vivacious
person who loves to dance, play the piano, swim, play golf, travel to new
places and make friends wherever she goes. Besides running the orphanage and
vocational centre, she teaches at a school for visually impaired slum dwellers.
She also conducts yoga workshops for sighted as well as blind people and has
taught yoga in India, the US and now in Dubai.

Miriam belongs to a rich and well-known family from Mumbai and had an idyllic
childhood. Her world became blurred when she was 12 years old and was diagnosed
with macular degeneration of the retina, a condition that had no known cure.
But she has not allowed that to affect her life in any way, fighting every
challenge with courage, resilience and a positive attitude. I believe in
counting my blessings. How can I ever complain when I have so much to thank God
for, and I see so many people with bigger problems than mine, she says.

Not different

Taking her cue from her parents, who treated her no differently from her
siblings, Miriam never spoke about her condition to anyone and asked for no
special
favours at school or elsewhere. Despite difficulties in reading her books she
did well in school and even continued her piano lessons by devising a way
to play without having to read the notes. At 13, she coaxed her parents to send
her to boarding school along with her sister and even played netball and
hockey at school.

I was able to do these things mainly because my parents and teachers never
made me feel that I was any different from others and always encouraged me to
do everything that I wanted to do, says Miriam. In fact, her father insisted
that like every member of the family she too must learn to play golf. And
as is typical of her she took it further to a competitive level and has won
many golf championships. She cannot see the green or the flag, but her trusted
caddy, points her in the right direction and tells her the distance so she
knows how hard to hit the golf ball and which club she should use.

Miriam also won medals at inter-collegiate and interstate swimming tournaments
and even qualified for the college hockey team. But with her vision
deteriorating,
keeping up with studies proved to be more difficult. The last straw came when a
keen suitor arrived to seek her hand in marriage. I did not want to marry
a rich man who would treat me like a possession. So I decided to flee. I
enlisted the help of an Italian friend to convince my father to let me go to
Italy
to learn Italian, she recalls.

Yoga

Yoga has been an important part of her life since her twenties and she is
qualified as a teacher of Iyengar Yoga. I was fortunate to be accepted as a
student
by guru B.K. Iyengar, who gave me special training to teach visually challenged
students. Yoga has given me inner strength and balance, and I have tried
to share this knowledge with as many people as I can, she says.

Do your part

UAE residents can support WECAN by helping to improve the facilities. For more

Asking casually, is there a Jaws shortcut key to toggle the punctuation?
Even if not, Harish's idea is definitely worth examining. But one thing is
for sure though, just now when I did this experiment before typing the last
sentence, I could actually hear greater than sign on the blank lines. So
Jaws cannot avoid saying greater when there is a blank line without
saying blank, even if the punctuation mode is off. However, this should
anoy or irritate as less as the message contains the blank lines.

 Hello all
I do appreciate the point of avoiding forward message and instead copy the
text and paste to a new mail.
However, in this instance, where much cannot be done, then, 1 trick which
will work irrespective using in email client or web is to turn the

I would like to clarify here that the greater than signs were part of the
original message, and were not inserted when I forwarded the message to
 the

In situations where the original message is itself a forwarded one and
therefore already contains the signs, is it possible to remove the

 in
this case. - Original Message -

After all, man
inherits his quality of adaptability as that of other species from
 nature!

I think the best solution is to work without headphones as much as
possible or, if you can't avoid using headphones, take regular breaks
--say, once in 20 or 25 minutes-- and keep yourself absolutely out of
noise by using ear plugs (a good pair of ear plugs are available in
health and glow shops for Rs 90).

Don't wear headphones without covering (if possible, to a great extent)
your ears with cotton. After office hours, spend more hours inside your
private room without any kind of noise. Avoid going to parties where you
may have to encounter more noise in the form of music played loudly.

Above all, check your constantly with an ENT specialist and undergo
audiogram tests to make sure your hearing isn't dropping considerably.

Subject: [AI] Increaseing hearing problems among visually impaired
community

Dear list members,
I would like to invite your views and openians on the following.
Recently we all have read the e-mails from our 2 members mr. Manish
Agarwal and mr. shadaph husen. mr. Agarwal wrote that he is facing some
hearing problem dew to the robotic voices of our screen reader programs.

Friends, most of us are working in a computer bassed jobs. In this kind
of jobs, we have to work with headphones for around 7 8 hrs or more
according to jobs. I think that this might develop hearing problems in
our year. Because there is no option to use headphones during work
hours. And the voices are very troublesome. If we think to use other
voices from JAWS, there quality is not so good that we can understand
each and every word. So friends, according to my personal view, it may
be a serias problem among us.
in one side we are saing that IT sector have opend many opportunities
for the employment of V I, but if this is the other side that affects
our basic capability of hearing then it is time to think on any
effective solution on this problem. There is no need to mention that if
a visually impaired person have no perfect hearing, then he has to face
many problems in his/her daily life. The problems may be regarding
comunication or interaction or mobility also.
Now you might think that why I am writing such a long mail and very
deeply? Because I am facing such problems in my life. I already have
almost 80% hearing los and I have to work in the above mentioned
situation. I am affreding that if I continue to work in the same
situation, the problem may get develop.
Your views regarding this problems are welcome and esencial. Friends,
sorry for such a long mail, but it is very very important for all of us.

Subject: [AI] Solution required

Hello Friends,
A friend of mine is facing a peculiar problem in his laptop. 4,5 and 6 are
the numbers written on U, I and O keys respectively. whenever he types the
alphebats U, the number 4 appears in the screen, number 5 in case of I and 6
in case of O. But when he types these keys in combination with the function
key U, I or O appear.Could anyone please come up with a solution to resolve
this problem.
Expecting a solution,
Abdul
