image Capchas are at present generated automatically and not stored in
any data base.
so I have to try to find a way to recognize the security code and give
audio feed back.
it needs a lot of time to exactly understand how things function.
so let me atleast try.

Hi Friends,
as I had posted few days back asking for suggestions for developing
software for visually challenged,
I got few responses.
I thought of few other Software.
one of them could be for solving the capcha.
I have read all the posts on this thread.
as you all know that capcha cannot be eliminated due to security issues,
and mathematical questions can be easily solved by bots.
but suggestion for text capchas was good.
as kartik suggested there can be questions like "your fathers father
is your grand father true/false"
but technically its too complicated for all websites to follow this
approach.
how capcha works is,
when you copy BotDetect PHP Captcha library to your PHP website folder,
you can write
php script that generates the CAPTCHA image and set a session that
stores the security.
so the image is generated at run time and there is no need to store
the image and the security code in any data base.
but when you consider the option of having multiple logical questions
(text capcha) which bots cannot solve,
you need to create a separate table to store questions and separate
table for storing answers.
then you have to establish a relation between the tables using primary
keys and foreign keys.
later there should be an algorithm to randomly pick up questions and
match the answer with the answer entered by the user.
it takes lot of effort (I have tried similar approach for generating
questions for a quiz software).
and creating such data base and algorithm for all websites that have
capcha is not practical.
and you obviously cannot have a data base shared by different websites.
and same algorithm also cannot be implemented for different websites
because any bot can easily analyze the algorithm
so what I think is,
I am going to try to find a way to give a better audio feed back for
the existing image capcha.
what do you think friends?

Dear all

I would like to draw your attension to a very frequent problem that we
face in many Govt department websites which in my opinion could be
solved easily. Many circulars and other documents of public importance
are just scanned and uploaded in image format which is not readable by
screen readers. Conversion to text is not always 100% perfact.

I think the logic behind this practice is to have the document signed
by the competant authority. But as we are gradually moving towards
paperless office its becoming irrelevant and could be done away with.
Example of RBI site could be put forward which is very much accessible
whose circulars are always uploaded in searchable text.

Thanks and regard

hi,
1. Alternate of scanned documents.
Agencies can put both scanned and digital document proclaiming that
the digital format is an unofficial copy and for the official
recognition, one can take the scanned documents. Thus, accessibility
is met and formal recognition is also fulfilled.
2. The great hurdle on accessibility on many site is due to the use of
the non-unicode texts. Responsible official can issue an strict
directive for all agencies to upload the documents written in unicode
encoding.

 Hi Friends,
as I had posted few days back asking for suggestions for developing
 software for visually challenged,
 I got few responses.

[AI] Court reverses undue transfer of blind professor

2014-09-18 Thread goutham agrawal
Dear All,

I am happy to inform you that the judiciary has once again expressed
its deep concern for promotion and protection of rights of persons
with disaiblity.

please refer below reproduced news covered in times of India with
regard to reverse an undue transfer of a visually challenged
professors.

with regards,
Gautam Agarwal

Court reverses undue transfer of blind professor

Tue, 09/16/2014 -
A vindictive transfer of a 100% visually impaired professor of
English, from a college close to his home to one 18km away by the
Puducherry higher education department, was flayed by the Madras high
court which said the authorities had acted in an insensitive manner.
Dr D Ramkumar, a doctorate degree-holder in English, is a 100%
visually challenged person working as head of the department of
English in Kasthurba College for Women in Villianur, Puducherry since
his appointment in February 2009.
The government-controlled Pondicherry Society for Higher Education
administers six colleges including this institution, which is located
about 9km from Dr Ramkumar's home. In 2013, he was transferred to
Rajiv Gandhi Arts and Science College in Thavalakuppam, Puducherry, on
the ground that only women faculty members were preferred at Kasthurba
college. Though authorities cited administrative reasons for the
transfer, Ramkumar said he was being targeted because they were
underwrong the impression that he was behind a sexual harassment
complaint lodged by a woman lecturer recently. appeal to authorities
was dismissed, and a single judge of the high court too upheld the
transfer saying the transfer was an incidence of service.
Reversing the single judge order and slamming the higher education
department authorities for their attitude, a division bench of Justice
N Paul Vasanthakumar and Justice K Ravichandrabaabu said: "There is no
dispute regarding the power of the authority to transfer an officer
from one college to another college on administrative exigency.
However, having regard to the state award conferred on Ramkumar, it is
beyond doubt that he is an asset to the women's college. It is not in
dispute that other male lecturers are allowed to serve in the college
even as on date. Thus, there is no justification to argue that it
being a women's college, Ramkumar has no right to continue there and
that he is to be necessarily transferred a college 18km away from his
residence."
Citing provisions of Persons with Disabilities (Equal opportunities,
Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995 and central
government circulars concerning disabled employees, the judges held
that there was a statutory violation committed by higher education
department while transferring Ramkumar from a college where he was
serving in a safe manner to another college 18km away from his
residence.
They then set aside both the transfer order and the single judge
verdict upholding the transfer order.

Re: [AI] Meeting with national informaticDirector Center (NIC) general

2014-09-18 Thread Jyotsna
Hi,
Please sensitize the NIC personnels about the difficulty faced by VI
community in solving Captcha and urge them to either remove or use
some alternate ways. As you are aware that even web visum has stopped
their service of captcha solving these days this captcha solving has
become big challenge in independent use of even accessible web
contents for VI community. If they don't have any alternate accessible
ways at present then suggest them to begin a web visum like service
for all such NIC websites which use captcha because audio captcha are
not clear most of the time.

Thanks,
Jyotsna

Re: [AI] Meeting with national informaticDirector Center (NIC) general

2014-09-18 Thread Ajay Sharma
Dear Sir,

The complete guidelines for making web content accessible laid by w3
consortium could be found at http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/

However in general if some simple things are considered while creating
a website, it would become accessible to a grater extent

1. Choosing a content management system that supports accessibility.
2. Using headings correctly to organize the structure of the content
3. Including proper alt text for images
4. Giving links unique and descriptive names.
5. Using color with care.
6. Designing forms for accessibility by giving proper names to name
attribute and labels.
7. Using tables for tabular data, not for layout.
8. Ensuring that all content can be accessed with the keyboard alone
in a logical way by considering the flow of division tags.
9. Using ARIA roles and landmarks.
10. Making dynamic content accessible. This can easily be done by usin
ARIA Roles and some accessible front end design frameworks.

The accessibility of a webpage could be checked at http://validator.w3.org/

I hope this would help.

Thanks and Regards,
Ajay Sharma

Hello!
this is simply an experience sharing- check whether it helps you.
oracle has its own accessibility team constantly working with the screen-reader
compatibility issue, in particular they take JAWS as the screen-reader. if you
go to the oracle documentation site and download the the oracle 11G express
edition documentation, then you will get the details of this team there. you
can learn the advance things of Oracle SQL, PL/SQL from there as well. moreover
you can refer to the book called "Oracle Database 11G: The Complete Reference",
you will begetting a step by step guide to learn the same with many examples.

its better to try it using oracle because many things like pl/sql
etc can be done efficiently by oracle.
 just try re-installing the software.
ask your Friends or teachers to install it for you.
there are few settings that are to be done while installing.
I remember my teacher giving instructions to install the software.

Re: [AI] Meeting with national informatic Center (NIC) Director General

2014-09-18 Thread Amar Jain
Based on my limited interaction with NIC and other Government
Ministries/ Departments under the Central Government's perview mainly
dealing with commercial aspects, I understand that unless explicit
instructions are given, accessibility is not imbedded by default.
Cost, time and effort are largely the reasons.

So ideally speaking:

1. Make sure that irrespective of the commercials, tenders and other
considerations, no product goes out which does not have at least the
very basic accessibility standards.

I am not getting in the argument of what is basic and what is not.
That can be evolved as time and technology demands.

2. Regarding the problem of putting the scanned copy containing the
signature of the authorized officials, a low cost and good workable
solution is to use digital signature.

If an analysis is done for the documents which are in the draft stage,
they are drafted using Microsoft Word, and even at times the PDF is
made from those documents. So, the content accessibility should not be
that big challenge (regional content is an exception here, for which
Unicode is to be preferred).

3. Provide us a mechanism where the genuine small concerns regarding
particular websites can be raised, and for making those minor
amendments, N.I.C. should have the authority to amend the source code
without instructions from the particular department (a term to that
effect can be included in the contract).

There exists an email address for the web guidelines, but I wonder if
that is even opened now a days.

India E-post Office is a good example. The very front page has a
flash button which has to be clicked in order to continue. Rest of the
site is manageable. If that one problem is solved (which NIC assured
me to solve in its next version and I am talking about 2012 or so),
the rest can be used.

For the time-being, this much should be good to start. Would
appreciate an update post the meeting.

Regards,
--
Amar Jain.

[AI] Automated Chess Board

2014-09-18 Thread Prashant Naik
News info on Automated Chess Board

Mumbai college designs tech-savvy chessboard for the blind

Watch a 6 minutes video *www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuFVDBDH0ys*

The innovation centre at Somaiya College, Mumbai has designed a chessboard
that is tailor-made for the sightless, with Braille inscription on chess
pieces, voice feedback of every move played, and textural

The specially designed board comes with Braille inscription on chess
pieces, voice feedback of every move played, and textural differences
between black and white boxes, amongst other features.

“There are already board games available in the market that can be used by
the visually-impaired, but our board game involves technology that allows
one to play the game online as well as on a physical board; the board
automatically plays the moves depending on the keys pressed,” said Gaurang
Shetty, head of the innovation centre.

The project was introduced by Shetty two years ago, and was completed only
this year, with the help of three college students. “The existing board
games in the market for the visually impaired are incomplete. So, we have
collaborated with the National Association for the Blind (NAB) for their
inputs while launching this board game,” he said, and added that the group
has filed for patenting their work.

Called Automated Chess (AC), the board game can be used for a single-player
game or a game with two players. “AC also provides the player with a
Graphical User Interface (GUI) over the Internet, so one person can play
over GUI sitting in any corner of the world, while the other plays on the
physical chess board,” added Shetty.

The board consists of a 64-key membrane keypad. At the heart of the project
is Arduino, an open source electronics platform based on easy-to-use
hardware. It is used to transfer signals from the board to the computer.

The chessboard is designed to facilitate the other senses of the player. “A
voice feedback is provided to the player. The chess pieces are inscribed
with Braille and there are textural differences between the black and white
boxes, making them easy to use for players. Users will find it easier to
not only play the game, but will also understand the other person’s moves
in the game better,” added Shetty.

This team had applied to the Maker Faire in Rome, and have recently been
invited by the organisers to showcase the board in Rome next month. The
Maker Faire Rome is a festival of invention and creativity, in which
projects from across the globe are showcased.

“While the project is ready, we are also trying to incorporate other
features to this chess board for even better results,” Shetty signed off.

[AI] Different Mobile OS Information

2014-09-18 Thread saffan mansoori
Hello my Friend I Send to Different Mobile Operating System Information.
OS (Operating System)
The Operating system is a base infrastructure software component of a
computerized system. It controls all basic operations of the computer
(or other electronic devices such as PDA, smartphone, etc.). The
Operating System allows the user to install and execute third-party
applications (commonly called apps for short), usually adding new
functionality to the device.
Among the most popular computer operating systems are Microsoft's
Windows and Apple's Mac OS, along with the various distributions of
Linux.
The most popular OS's for mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) are
Apple's iOS and Google's Android and they are the only ones that still
show growth. Down the ranks there are RIM's BlackBerry OS and
Microsoft's Windows Phone. Symbian holds a distant fifth place, while
merely a year ago it was still the most widely used mobile OS.
Symbian held its top position for years but its market share has been
slowly fading away ever since touch-operated smartphones became the
norm and Symbian failed to deliver an intuitive touch UI. Almost ten
years ago, Microsoft's Windows Mobile was a strong player too,
offering the first touchscreen smartphone experience with the
PocketPCs powered by their OS.
Today mobile devices with a proper OS are called smartphones and users
have a wide choice of applications, such as games, productivity apps,
communication or social media apps, digital maps, etc.
Standardized operating system platforms make it possible to provide a
consistent user interface (and experience) across devices from
different hardware manufacturers. Yet, Android smartphone
manufacturers like to customize the user experience so each offers a
slightly modified version of the stock Android UI.
While the major players these days are clear, over the years we've
seen the emergence of numerous mobile OS projects including but not
limited to Palm's webOS, Samsung's Bada OS, Nokia's Maemo OS, Nokia's
MeeGo OS, LiMo OS, Tizen, BlackBerry's Playbook OS and more recently,
the Jolla's Sailfish OS and Mozilla's Firefox OS.

Android
Android is a Linux-based smartphone operating system and software
platform created by Google.
Android beta
The beta release of Android OS was released on 5 November 2007. The
first SDK was released a week later, on 12 November 2007.
Android 1.0
Android 1.0 was the first commercially available release of the OS. It
was available on the pioneering device - the T-Mobile G1 (released
October 2008 in the US and the UK) along with the Android source code.
Android 1.1
Android 1.1 was pushed out on 9 February 2009, coinciding with the
announcement of the HTC Dream, an internationally available twin of
the T-Mobile G1.
Android 1.5 Cupcake
Android 1.5 Cupcake was released on 30 April 2009. It was the first
major Android overhaul and it also was the first Android release to be
pet-named after a dessert - a tradition that has been kept alive ever
since. Every subsequent Android release was named after a dessert,
whose name started with the next letter of the alphabet.
Version 1.5 Cupcake introduced the software on-screen keyboard to
Android and allowed the production of touch devices sans QWERTY
keyboards such as the HTC Magic (announced February 2009). Equally
importantly, it enabled Android smartphones to shoot video.
Along with that, v. 1.5 Cupcake added support for third-party software
keyboards, third-party widgets, stereo Bluetooth, copy and paste in
the web browser, screen auto-rotation, and an option to upload media
to YouTube and Picasa.
Android 1.6 Donut
Android 1.6 Donut was released on 15 September 2009. It added
text-to-speech, updated Android Market now offered app screenshots,
and it introduced support for WVGA screens. The camera became faster,
and the gallery, camera and camcorder got deeply integrated with each
other.
Android 2.x Eclair
Android 2.0 Eclair SDK was released on 26 October 2009. Android 2.0
introduced multiple account sync, Microsoft Exchange email support,
Bluetooth 2.1, the Quick Contact feature, showing a pop-up for call,
SMS and email, as soon as you tap on a contact's avatar. The camera
received new features such as flash support, digital zoom, scene mode,
white balance, color effect and macro focus. The web browser UI was
updated and some new features were added such as double-tap to zoom.
We saw the much overdue native support for multi-touch interaction
with software. Live wallpapers were first introduced with Eclair, as
well. The UI was redesigned, there were multiple performance
improvements and we welcomed the support for more screen sizes and
resolutions.
Google Maps Navigation was also introduced alongside Android 2.0
Eclair, quickly turning into a key selling point for Android
smartphones in the supported countries.
Android 2.1 was a subsequent release, which was dubbed Eclair, too, as
it wasn't a major update in terms of functionality. This sort of minor
upgrades betwee

[AI] Where is the Disaster Management Policy for Disabled in India?

2014-09-18 Thread Sanchit Katiyar
Where is the Disaster Management Policy for Disabled in India?

Abha Khetarpal

New Delhi - September is National Preparedness Month in America.
Sponsored by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National
Preparedness Month aims to educate and empower Americans to prepare
for and respond to all types of emergencies, including natural
disasters and potential terrorist attacks.

Disaster preparedness ought to be a priority for any country. But
ironically it's been a week that a national daily covered the issue of
callousness of the authorities and state agencies towards the disaster
management and emergency preparedness for the people with disabilities
in India and nobody has uttered a word about it. The National Disaster
Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Institute of Disaster
Management (NIDM) in India clearly stated in their replies to RTIs
filed by me, Abha Khetarpal, President, Cross the Hurdles, that they
have no specific and clear policies and management strategies to
rescue people with disabilities at the time of disasters whether man
made or natural. But not a single word has been spoken regarding this
by any of the government agency whether it may be Ministry of Social
Justice and Empowerment, Ministry of Home Affairs and NDMA, whose
Chairperson Is the Prime Minister himself or NIDM which is responsible
to provide technical support to the state governments through the
Disaster Management Centers (DMCs) in the Administrative Training
Institutes (ATIs) of the States and Union Territories.

Here I am not comparing the facilities given in these two countries
i.e. America and India. I know it would wrong on my part to do so
because there are economic limitations of developing country which a
huge amount of population and almost everything belonging to the
unorganized sector. But yes, I am won't be ashamed to compare the
attitudes of the government departments, implementation of whatever
written in the rule books and lack of importance given to human lives
between these two countries.

In their reply to the RTI to NDMA states that there are no special
measures and minimum standard of relief has been prescribed for
rescuing of persons falling Below Poverty Line group. The rescue and
relief and operation teams of NDRF are specially trained to treat
people with special needs. But if you go the link of their website
given by them to check their training modules you won't find any such
module in this regard or mention of such specific course.

And NIDM in their reply to the RTI clearly states that they have not
yet developed any training materials. It should be the duty of the
state agencies to educate the public about how to prepare for
emergencies, including natural disasters, mass casualties, biological
and chemical threats, radiation emergencies, and terrorist attacks
especially for those who are not able to defend themselves during
emergency.

Apart from giving 'moral support and preference' as told by NDMA,
specific needs of different disabilities must be addressed in addition
to the usual needs of all individuals. For example, it might be
difficult for people with physical impairments to keep themselves warm
due to lack of movement and poor circulation. This situation demands
the need for warm clothing, blankets or fi re wood. In addition,
people with difficulty in moving may also need assistance for
evacuating from an unsafe situation, accessing relief shelters and
using latrines. Physical assistance, assistive devices, or
installation of ramps may be necessary to ensure these persons are not
disadvantaged or trapped in a dangerous situation. People with visual
or hearing impairments are unlikely to notice warning signals and
quick evacuation routes during a disaster situation. Subsequently
there should be a separate alarm system along with personnel support
to move them to a safer place. Some of them may find it difficult to
understand and appropriately react to instructions; for these persons,
it is important to provide relevant information in a manner which they
can understand such as using simple language or pictures, or speaking
very slowly and clearly. Where are the specific guidelines or training
modules to cater to such needs? No policy measures and proper
infrastructure built up is mentioned to rescue of evacuate persons
with disabilities from government and private buildings like offices,
auditoriums, theaters, hotels, schools etc. There is no contingency
plan to regarding management of persons with disabilities at the time
of disaster whether man made or natural. There are no specific
evacuation measures apart from being given preference.

There was a polio epidemic in Car Nicobar Island (India) several years
ago, which resulted in about 700 people becoming disabled. Three days
after the disaster tsunami in 2004 people could not locate a single
disabled person! They may be dead, as they may not have been able

2014-09-18 Thread Himanshu Sahu
Another landmark judgement by Delhi High court...
such judgements are required more and more to wake up Stubborn
managements who misuse their vast resources for harassing PH employees
aggrieved with their discriminatory policies instead of using these
resources for their welfare...
Salute to comrade V. Krishnamurthy...

  1. Pleadings are complete.

  2. At the outset, counsel for the petitioner states that the
respondent No.1 has filed WP (C)No.14017/2012 in the Madras High Court,
wherein directions were sought to the petitioner/Bank (respondent in the
aforesaid petition) to provide him study materials and to arrange a
scribe at their cost and without any mark restriction to enable him, who
is a person with visual disability, to participate in the process of
promotion to the MMG Scale-III. Further, the respondent No.1 had
challenged the promotion policy of the petitioner/Bank dated
16.5.2012. A copy of the aforesaid writ

petition has been enclosed with the rejoinder filed by the
petitioner/Bank and marked as Annexure P-10.

  3. The Court is informed by the counsel for the petitioner/Bank that
the respondent No.1 was promoted to the MMG Scale-III on 27.5.2014 and
thus, the said relief does not survive.

  4. As regards the remaining reliefs, since the aforesaid writ petition
is pending before the Madras High Court and the respondent No.1, who is
visually challenged and a permanent resident of Coimbatore, is appearing
through counsel in the said proceedings, this Court is of the opinion
that great inconvenience will be caused to him if he has to continue
defending the present petition filed by the Bank from such a long
distance. The petitioner being a nationalized bank has enough
wherewithal, apart from a well organized legal department to pursue
litigations all over the country, including the Madras High Court.

  5. For the Bank to file the present petition in this Court only on the
ground that the impugned order dated 2.5.2013 was passed by the Chief
Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, whose office is situated in
Delhi, cannot be the sole consideration that will weigh with the Court
while examining the aspect of territorial jurisdiction. The doctrine of
forum convenience gains significance when the respondent

No.1, who is visually challenged, is admittedly a resident of Coimbatore
and working for gain in a Branch of the petitioner/Bank situated in the
very same city. Further, having regard to the fact that the respondent
No.1 has already approached the Madras High Court for appropriate relief
in WP(C)No.14017/2012, which is being contested by the petitioner/Bank
and is pending adjudication in the said court, it is deemed appropriate
to dispose of the present petition with liberty granted to the
petitioner/Bank to file appropriate proceedings in the Madras High Court.

  6. In view of the fact that an interim order dated 5.8.2014 is
operating in favour of the petitioner/Bank, it is directed that the said
order shall remain in operation for a period of four weeks from today,
which is considered sufficient time for the petitioner/Bank to approach
the Madras High Court for relief.

  7. The writ petition is disposed of, along with the pending
  application.

amazing and hats off to icici. offcourse, no bank has rule from top
management not to give ATM cards or mobile banking or net banking to
us. its only due to the wrong interpretation of officers in branches
and their reluctants to learn even if we try to make them aware.

Re: [AI] Court reverses undue transfer of blind professor

2014-09-18 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
A good judgment.
However, again it proves that we are at the mercy of managements and judges.
There is no unbiased system working to empower the disabled.
Single JUDGE upholds the transfer and thanks to perseverance of Ramkumar and
support he got and of course thanks to two judges who sided with him, that he
could retain his earlier posting.

With thanks and regards

Subject: [AI] Court reverses undue transfer of blind professor

Subject: [AI] The phenomenology of the handshake

While reading this very interesting piece on (Sunday), I am reminded
of practical difficulty faced by majority of us (blind people) while
responding to handshake offer. I've heard many diseases are known to
have spread from unprotected handshake but this does not mean we avoid
handshake in genuine situation Can we exchange our interesting
experiential/funny accounts about handshake? and find a solution to
this dillemma...
http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-openpage/the-phenomenology-of-the-handshake/article6408899.ece
Shaking hands with this strongly built former Army man is quite an
experience. He shakes hands with you firmly, will look you in the eye
gently, and greet you with a very polite 'how are you'. However,
post-handshake, your fingers and palm will take a little time to
recover from the unexpected exercise. The experience is not altogether
physical.

The handshake, historically popular in different cultures, is an act
meant to establish contact between two human beings. Human beings are
bound to each other in a great chain of being, and a handshake is a
link in this chain.

More than the ritual itself, it is the manner of shaking hands which
says it all: it reveals if the chain is valued or not. In our culture,
a handshake that is slightly less solid than our Army man friend's can
be considered normative. A hand offered perfunctorily could reflect
indifference and an absence of warmth. Human beings have a
responsibility towards their cultural environment. The output depends
on the input. A firm, friendly and warm handshake is a positive input
in our environment; it usually produces a positive output. An unsure
hand could well release negative vibes.

A handshake that lasts for some duration also makes a statement. In
most meetings between top leaders, the act of the handshake is watched
closely. When Narendra Modi shook hands with Nawaz Sharif at his
swearing-in ceremony, it was estimated that he held the Pakistan
leader's hand for a full 26 seconds, looking him in the eye. In a way
he appeared to have gained some psychological points before the eager
cameramen and reporters.

Who shakes hands with whom can offer a study in gender relations,
changing manners and the dynamics of power in relationships.

In a patriarchal set-up, men do not shake hands with women. Women
offering their hands for a handshake would even be looked down upon.
In the urban professional set-up where patriarchal customs are
weakening, some women may shake hands with men and some will not. In
any case, a handshake between a man and a woman in a professional
situation would be gentle and brief. In traditional Muslim households
there was a time when women simply greeted each other but did not
usually shake hands with each other. In the same kind of households
now, handshake between women is often the norm.

A younger person offering his hand to an older person is a sign of
poor manners, at least in India. It is the older person who must offer
his hand. Where age is not a factor in a relationship, it does not
matter who takes the initiative. However, the person taking the
initiative will be considered more open and warm-hearted.

The social and professional status of a person also determines the
custom of the handshake. A person higher in status can choose to shake
or not shake hands with a person lower in status. An attendant should
not dare to offer his hand to his boss. The boss offering his hand to
his attendant in a professional context would be considered rare
indeed. However, the same boss may offer his hand to the attendant if
he visits his home on some festival.

At times, a handshake can be a cause of problem. The evil practice of
untouchability and slavery had once made even the thought of handshake
between some groups unthinkable. The idea of a handshake is also
uncomfortable for a person suffering from obsessive compulsive
disorder. The simple matter of hygiene also determines the practice of
the handshake. Imagine a situation where a person having the problem
of OCD is forced by etiquette to shake hands with somebody given to
picking his nose or not washing his hands after a visit to the
washroom.

An ecstatic form of handshake is the high five, made popular by
certain sportspersons. High fives may be exchanged between younger
people, but will be out of place in a formal situation. But the
thought of a high five with my Army man friend gives me a shudder. A
firm handshake may be more than enough.

Writing several other books on her Braille typewriter, book titled,
