It very much sounds like someone has mis-wired this transmitter. The BLUE wires are for the low voltage secondary. You should have two red wires going to V11 pins 4 and 6, which are the plates of the 5R4GY. The center tap which is red and yellow striped is supposed to go to ground. Jack - the typical, normal HV winding of a plate transformer consists of this: RED/YELLOW = center tap. RED X 2 = HV AC to rectifier plates. Not so fast, Jim... Actually there was a video from a TV show recently where a ham sending a message via CW got a message through FASTER than a digityal message sent by more modern technical means. I am sure many of us saw that. It was shown on a national televised show. It made me VERY proud of our wonderful Samuel "F.B." Morse and his simple code that has so enriched the lives of countless ten thousands of hams! Hi Pete, Well, it's been almost 7 years since I lived there, but I think that is the 50.4 MHz group on Sunday mornings. Back then they told me their net had been in continuous operation for 37 years. Two Meter AM is going strong in Europe. Here's a report about some cross-channel contacts from the Netherlands to England etc. on 144 MHz AM! Looks like they use 144.55 MHz there, just up from our 144.450 MHz calling frequency. For my 160m shunt fed tower I had a Rohn 25 - a 60 footer with a few feet buried in concrete... So I dug out some old articles on how to do it. Now, I DID have a good capacity hat in the form of a 4 element Swan TB4HA beam at the top. AND an 11 element Cushcraft bean on 2m FM above that. I had deliberately installed insulators on the guy wires, so that was not a problem. Ran a piece of #12 gauge solid copper wire up the side about 12" off the tower to a copper pipe standing off at about the 40 or 50 foot level and attached firmly to the tower with two U bolts. This is all from memory. There was a sreries variable capacitor at the bottom of the shunt line, and it worked really well. Exactly, Don this is the issue in a nutshell... you have to remember. That is something that us senior citizens are not too good at! Just look at all of the dupes we get from AM Radio and on Glowbugs! It's not a huge issue, but Outlook does put that limitation on us because it only gives two choices - REPLY or REPLY-ALL. So it is extra work for one Outlook user to delete the excess addresses on one end, OR extra work to delete the excess messages for several hundred people on the other end, hi hi. Or sometimes they were for 160m AM and 4m AM (70 MHz band) - not that we have 4m in the USA, but it is kind of equivalent to 6m, I suppose. Those rigs would leverly use a single local oscillator with the appropriate mutipliers and mixers and voila - two band rig for 160m and VHF in one box! 160m AM was THE local band/mode for there in the 1960s, before 2m AM caught on, and LONG before 2m FM kicked in. THOSE were the days! 10 watts were all anyone needed for either band! For those who love the old rigs and remember the old days fondly, WE will hang on to and cherish our older rigs but, For those who hate nostalgia, and have only miserable memories of the past - sure - go ahead and put your old WhIteface Johnsons in the trash!

Some of these "MYTHS" may actually be "myths about myths." Actually there are a number of commercially manufactured tube RF finals that DO indded use toroidal transformers. Dentron, for one example - they made a number of linear amps like that, and they were/are not alone. When we speak of SWR, we are actually measuring VSWR in most cases, i.e. VOLTAGE standing wave ration - not current. Although they are related of course. The power may not be wasted very much in the tuner, BUT REFLECTED power goes back into the RF final and is disippated in the famil amplifier device(s) - at least many people have written articles for decades describing that marticular "myth" or so-called "FALSE STATEMENT." I have heard some DX40s and DX60s that sound really great on AM using a D104 with no modifications. I get good reports on my DX60 with the D104. You can find those AM filters around. I found one for about $35 - 40 for AM on my SB300 the best that I remember. I have seen some for more, but just watch eBay. Excellent comments Don - I learn more about all of this with these discussions. It is too easy to draw a simplistic conclusion and write everybody off in simple terms when you read bits and pieces about these conflicts between K1MAN and others, as well as other conflicts within hamdom. There DOES seem to be an element of obstinacy and ego that runs throughout a lot of it. I seem to observe many hams - often in the 40 to 60 year-old age groupo that display all of the maturity of third grade bullies on the school yard! You are right - Brian Sherrod seems to be behaving way over-protectively. MOderators need to just let some of this stuff go even if it is a little "exciting" for some folks.
