BirminghamDreams Conference of the Words, a Sufi tale of self-discovery, is A. R. Rahman's next project. Its orchestral version will be premiered in Birmingham, reveals the musician in a chat with DEEPA GANESH PHOTO: VINO JOHN DOWN-TO-EARTH A. R. Rahman doesn't let the glamour go to his head Waiting for A. R. Rahman in a long queue of eager-beaver journos, aspiring singers, hopeful producers and directors, friends and fans is a test of patience. To make things worse, a voice declares that everyone will get only five minutes with Rahman. What does one ask in five minutes to someone who redefined Indian film music and the world's perception of it? That too to a man who has such a huge body of work to his credit and seems so frightfully reticent? But the mild-mannered Rahman allayed all apprehensions and graciously said even after my five minutes were up: "Go on." In fact, he even offered a second chance a precious 10 minutes! A trailblazer Rahman is truly amazing for the manner in which he stormed into the Indian film music scene even before establishing his regional credentials. With his debut film Roja in 1991, he became a national phenomenon, bagging the Rajat Kamal for it. Rahman acknowledged that it was all part of a conscious design. "I wasn't too happy with the I-don't-want-to-listen-to-it attitude of our youngsters towards film music. Why can't we get our guys to listen to our own music rather than to Michael Jackson? I didn't want us to lose the market to the West. The music had to be cool, it had to be rooted, and yet had to branch out. It was like the wild imagination of a child... but it worked... It did travel beyond Chennai and attract people," explained the gifted composer. Having a studio of his own has helped him in a big way. He has had the freedom of working on his tunes day and night, for days, months and years (he worked almost for a year on the Rangeela song and worked for a good six months on Roja's "Tamizha Tamizha"), until he was fully satisfied with it. " I have rubbed many a producer the wrong way by disturbing the schedule, but it has paid off." In the case of his blockbuster album Vande Mataram too, he was fully aware of what he was doing. If it changed the image of India from a peace-loving country to a nuclear powerhouse, it was intended. Rahman and his friend Bharat Bala conceived it as a flag-waving, jingoistic declaration, a mantra of every kid in the country. "It had to be unlike the one that has been played on the radio for years. I wanted a sound that would connect me with people and capture a collective energy." But going by Rahman's style, which has a visual texture to it, his version of "Vande Mataram" doesn't capture the celebration of Indian landscape in Bankim Chandra's poem. "It wasn't intended that way," came the concise reply. With Vande Mataram, Rahman, who gave Indian music a global feel, also re-asserted himself as a gizmo freak. (In fact, he is said to spend most of his money on acquiring new electronic gadgets.) Not that he has made only foot-tapping numbers; he did classical pieces for films like Bombay, Roja, Dil Se etc besides numerous heart-rendering numbers for Tamil films. "Somehow, people just put all my melodies on the backburner and remembered me for only rhythm-driven songs. But things have changed since Lagaan. They have woken up to the other aspects in me." Rahman remembered how on his way to Gulbarga from Hyderabad, he was playing a soft song and the car driver threatened to fall asleep if he didn't play a fast one. But during one of his trips to Germany, an admirer came up to him to say how much he liked the songs in Zubeidaa, a film that failed at the box-office. "I take all criticism objectively and believe in elevating the tastes of the listener," he maintained. Back to roots Presently, Rahman is working on a project called Conference of the Words, a book based on a Sufi tale of self-discovery. This will be turned into an orchestral work and premiered in Birmingham. And like his true self, "I'm going to take a very long time on this." Despite confessions such as "I feel abnormal when I talk", Rahman loves to connect with people, of course, in a different medium. Talk of the Airtel ad, tell him it was quintessential Rahman with a good balance of melody and rhythm, and he will tell you that after a two-year stay in London for the Broadway production Bombay Dreams (he accepts that it got "bad reviews"), "there was this desperate need to reconnect. And that's why I agreed to star in it too." Rahman has broken several moulds in his career spanning 15 years. He tried to break away from the predictable, unthinking perfection of film music by using raw, untamed voices and bringing in an element of dissonance, even while he made film music hot and happening. But over the years, with every new composer wanting to be a Rahman, he has become a cliché. "I think it is important for a composer to have his own

hi foks, i like a aa( hmmm kind of)...and love rising ...but all u pple will agree with me that the vintage rahman was best... rangeela,jeans,indian, thiruda , minsara kanavu, isa that charm hidden or lost ..or has he been burdened by trhe overuse of technology...i being a technical guy know that technoogy is necessary tomake a song and even to break it...gone r those long orchestral interludes of vennilavae( minsara) and tanha ( rangeela) and hai re( jeans) i loved them ...that has shaped my devotion for rahmans music...but where is it now?? Is dynamism so important as to snatch away the very essence of music that is made pple might give thousand and one explanations in defence but the music of Rahman although might not have detiriorated( i am no one to use that wrd here!!)it ceratainly has has become too differnt or has undergone a radical metamorphosis in this time . the difference is "" i loved his music then ...i like it now "" jagdeep. hi Guru.. i guess u didnt get my pointand i didnt get urs either...( smile).u drifted from my point...i guess ARR's popularity is intact...as i also feel that as there was only one IRthere can be only one ARR...i still believe very frmly in his greatness...( and not once have i felt any need whatsoever to prove it.trust me!!! (smile)but the fact remains that i dont get what u say man...not a word.sorry but true!!! and dear krishna.. i guess ARRcame in where the biggest competittion cud ve been IR...think about it!!! hi sanket.. ARR has wrked with IR for a few years...in ARR's wrds "Mr.Illaiyaraja has taught me the discipline of music direction..." Although to say that ARR is beter than Illaiyaraja or Illaiyaraja Ia a better composer is purely a matter of personal preferance and tastesit would not be wrong to say that Illaiyaraja enjoyed immense popularity in the south but the north was largely unmoved by him and his extreme genius leave alone the reast of the world.as regards this ...ARR is definitely more popular because of his Global appealbut it is a fact that the genius of Illaiyaraja is also well accepted and appreciated...even by ARR till date. Personally too.as far as richness of compositions is concerned ..i feel Illaiyaraja is a little better than ARR ( purely my own opinion..) but as far as sound goes...Boss wins So i guess that ARR and boss are kings of their own times...and bests do co exist...look at Madan Mohan, Shankar Jaikishan, SD Burman,SalilChoudhry...etc...they were from the same era...each a creative genius... AR, having many projects on hand down south, denied the offer. Later the director and producers 'Geetha Arts' made up their minds to team up with Anu Malik. It was Anu Malik who suggested that some Tamil songs should be used in Hindi too. Since AR was getting famous in Mumbai too, the director decided to take the proper permissions from AR Rahman, Shankar, and the Audio companies.Accordingly, they took the permissions from director and composer. HMV took the audio copyrights from Pyramid, and the songs were made in Hindi. hi "Sam Sujith" [EMAIL PROTECTED],an arp can be programmed to run up and down on different notes (or 1 note ) that are pressed ( in a fixed pattern ) or can be programmed to play single note in a pattern which might just have intervals with or without any ifx or mfx.i guess 'coz this is how my triton works.. it does not have presets but can be programmed to the same effect... but what u say could also be correct as there could be many different workarounds for the same thing and moreso, i do not know much about softsynths to be very honest..can u give me links to download good softsynths ... like the absynth ??? i want 2 upload my compositions toowhat will i have to do in order for it .. i hope people dont copy the tunes.but anyways many of them are copywrited so no probs . i will upload those. meanwhile i will dl u r song asap gotta hurry to office.. see ya buy. hi Aditya Pawar [EMAIL PROTECTED], I hope u r referring to baadal of yuva.it opens with the following instruments ( i guess !!!):- 1. synthesised sound of the wood bass which is most likely the reproduction of aYamaha 900 pro synth ( i have played it and it is amazing !!!.) 2. then there are sounds thet seem like pizzicatoes.(8 plunk of voilin strings) continuously.( again synthesised.) 3. there is a single E note strumming of the steel string guitar continuously on every alternate beat( this too i ssynthesized i believe.) 4.there is the main rhythm that is a 4 beat rhythm played coninuously. 5.then there is the main tune plyed by a synth lead most commonly found in korg triton synth workstations and others like roland phantom... ( that too is lo-fi deliberately processed like that to give it a shrill grainy texture.) note :- i would like to add here that towards the ending there is a section of indian rhythm thet is not orchestrated by BOSS BUT IS A COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE SAMPLE ... i have it too hope u gyus like my inputs and any musicians out there who wud like to differ ..share ur comments and we could well start a new trend in the group.
