Well in my opinion the movie is stupid and the music has been horribly used.
I think one needs to watch a lot of hollywood comedy movies to find this

It's also the same case with bollywood or most film industries for that
matter. Not all films are nominated based on their popularity or success at
the box-office. If I'm not wrong, a number of our group members had earlier
on expressed their fears that Delhi6 music might not be nominated for the
popular awards due to the film's failure at the box-office. Yuvraaj's failure
at the BO was quoted as one of the examples.

Their fears are justifiable but there's no harm in hoping. Personally, I feel
that awards (esp music awards) are based more on the popularity of the songs
rather than the success of the film. Yuvraaj did have magical numbers but
were they as popular as all the other ARR's albums? I don't think so..and I
blame it all on the bad marketing of the album. When Subash Ghai did Taal
with ARR, there were immense marketing for the music album as it was their
first collaboration. Moreover, Taal was deemed to revive the careers of
Subash Ghai, Aishwarya Rai, and Akshaye Khanna who until then, had a string
of flops behind them. Therefore, though the movie was hardly watchable, it
was still declared a hit, all thanks to the success of the sensational songs.

But in the case of Yuvraaj, there weren't much marketing done for the film or
the songs. Yes, we rave about the beauty of the songs here because we hv
heard and fell in love with each one of those numbers, but frankly speaking,
how many non-Rahman fans have actually sat and heard these songs? Not many
going by my guesses. So, I don't think it's apt to use Yuvraaj as a yardstick
 in this case.

Delhi6 was different...the film didn't do well in the BO but the songs have
been garnered with praises from the public (ARR's fan and otherwise). Rehna
Tu Maasakali were regularly played in all the major radio stations (mainly
due to the repeated request of the listeners).

If anything, kindly remember that Dilse's ill-fate at the BO in 1998 didn't
seem to affect the popularity of the songs. ARR even went on to win a
filmfare award for the the best music that year. A similar situation might
 occur here too.

Therefore there's no harm in hoping that ARR might bag another award for
Delhi6. Keep your fingers crossed for Delhi6...and CR too:)

2009-09-30 Thread Shama Mehta
I am lovin' the album.

I feel inclined to mention the track 'Meeting Marcel'. In this track, if you
listen carefully, there is a classic Buddhist chanting going on, a unique
Buddhist flavor has been added. It sounds stunning.
As far as I can remember, this is the first time any Indian music composer has
used Buddhist chants, let alone in a track.

~ Shama

your intention, so is your will. As is your will so is your deed. As is your
deed, so is your destiny.'  The Upanishads

I m just going to write the way i felt on hearing the soundtrack for the
 first time

  SAJNA

 ... no words...
i could see OUR RAHMAN sir in the melody

 NANA

I just have one question what is the capacity of Rahman sir's brain... as a
musician i m little disappointed too... he is not letting off any style for
others to touch... he is exploring every new possible way and becoming a
master in that and gives a brilliant tune... and this one is a great track
 in the album

 Undress

OH MY GAWD...!!! a brilliant blend of east and west... starting with ghatam
 and tampura and building brilliantly...

 SALVADORE

TYPICAL RAHMANISH... i really love this track though i could feel traces of
Jumbalakka in the begining... but still amazing guitars and this track is
going to be a big new treat for western world

KURU KURU: Indian language in Hollywood movie... and RAHMAN Sir's Voice...
amazing new kind of melody to Indian audience and absolutely in west way...

and reserving best to the last:

 ANIMAL SPIRIT

*The Rahman* who inspired me to write music... who inspired me to play
keyboard is here... right here... YEAH THIS is the track of album...
amazing.. I saw 90s Rahman coming back... RAHMAN SIR HATS OFF TO YOU...!!!

The rest of tracks are typical soundtracks which i am sure going to sound
 great with the movie...

I wouldn't be surprised if RAHMAN sir becomes the first indian to win
Academy awards continuously for 2 years...

C'mon guys, (Afro Nisha) is not a singer! It's really funny to read all the
comments about the voice being 'suspiciously' similar to Rahman. Well, that's
because it is Rahman.

I don't think Afro Nisha is even a person. If anything, it could be the
English title of the Tamil 'Kurukuru Kan' or it could even be a new genre.

I can only say one thing for sure, the singer in 'Kurukuru Kan(Afro Nisha)' is
Rahman.

Thanks for sharing your feelings! I too feel the same way you do! IN addition
to the tracks you mentioned, I also liked Sharks, Intervention (Both with ARR's

i could see OUR RAHMAN sir in the melody

 Diff between Blue and CR

 1) Blue has multiple layers, very dense, while CR is lighter in terms of

 2) Blue's sound engineering team are composed of multiple people, using
different platforms around the world (multisourced), hence some
inconsistencies in terms of volumes, etc. (found that out through a good
friend). Also, check out the sound credits in the Blue inlayso many
people! CR's sound team appears to be more intimate and I think ARR may have
supervised the sound better in CR.

 3) The nature of Blue's music is loud and heavy, given it's an action and
massala bollywood flick. CR's theme is more light and since it's mostly
instrumental, allowed AR to show more pure artistic creativity in terms of
 sound and arrangements.

BTW, I love Blue and CR both for different reasons.

[arr] Re: Couples Retreat Review 2!

2009-09-26 Thread ichord
Ok, let me further explain what I said below before a backlash storm hits me,
which I'm ready for. This is only my opinion, and not at all meant any
disrespect for Karthik or his opnions.

I didn't mean to say below that Karthik should never write reviews for
hollywood OSTs. He has a right to his reviews and opinions for any music
anywhere. I guess what I would prefer is for him to take more time to listen
to a hollywood soundtrack and make his reviews more elaborate for a hollywood
score, since the OSTs for that film industry are more artistic in nature, less
poppish, more global in reach, and generally more abstract with OST cues and
instrumental pieces mostly instead of songs. Karthik's reviews for bollywood
scores are based on a certain crisp and first impression approach, which I
generally respect, but also one that is mostly from a song oriented template in
my opinion. He wrote about Sajna, which I disagree with, but don't have any
issues about it being cursory, since it's a song. For the rest of the cues,
however, I wish there would have been more elaboration, even if negative,
because I feel that instrumental cues are a lot more in depth and ornate than
usual bollywood songs, thus I feel requiring a different template for review.
A short first impression review to me is much more of an appropriate match for
a song based soundtrack than a more abstract, instrumental based soundtrack.
That's all I'm saying.

Guys, this is just my opinion before anyone starts beating me over the head. I
mean no disrespect towards Karthik or anyone else's opinions by this.

I'm sorry for my thoughts of late to be somewhat disorganized and writing
multiple, long posts. These days, I'm not into a crisp mode of writing for
some reason! I'll try and get back to that mode again.

What Karthik has written is his opinion, obviously, but one that I pretty much
completely disagree with. No dominant theme? You kidding me? The melody of
Sajna and John and Cynthia's Suite keep weaving in and out of the soundtrack
and multiple places, forming a coherent whole In no way is this a review
of the soundtrackjust a cursory commentary without being attuned to detail,
that's it. Music is meaningless without the film? Ok, man..I don't think
many will agree with you there.

Guys, the genius of CR is in the details. Those who miss out (Karthik), I pity
you.

Sorry for another post on the same subject, but I think Karthik should restrict
his posts to only Indian scores, as most Western OSTs are not song oriented
soundtracks, which are much more able to be represented by a cursory 100 word
review. The OSTs from the West are more artistic and abstract in general, so
in my opinion, a cursory short word review is just not doing justice in both
directions, negative or positive. Moreover, even if Karthik wrote a raving
review of the OST, I would still have an issue with that type of review. Just
my two cents.

Yeah I agree with you on some points. Music in H'wood movies are not about
'songs' and isn't about 'I-am-good,-listen-to-me-over-and-over-again. They
compliment the visuals unlike the Indian film 'songs'. So, it'd be better to
review any H'wood soundtrack after the release of the movie, keeping in mind
its theme and sequence.

I really didn't expect Karthik to write CR review, this soon. I disagreed on
his AR's CONNECTIONS review too, he missed out those 3 silent invocation.

Ok, let me further explain what I said below before a backlash storm hits me,
which I'm ready for. This is only my opinion, and not at all meant any
disrespect for Karthik or his opnions.

I didn't mean to say below that Karthik should never write reviews for
hollywood OSTs. He has a right to his reviews and opinions for any music
anywhere. I guess what I would prefer is for him to take more time to listen
to a hollywood soundtrack and make his reviews more elaborate for a hollywood
score, since the OSTs for that film industry are more artistic in nature,
less poppish, more global in reach, and generally more abstract with OST cues
and instrumental pieces mostly instead of songs. Karthik's reviews for
bollywood scores are based on a certain crisp and first impression approach,
which I generally respect, but also one that is mostly from a song oriented
template in my opinion. He wrote about Sajna, which I disagree with, but
don't have any issues about it being cursory, since it's a song. For the
rest of the cues, however, I wish there would have been more elaboration,
even if negative, because I feel that instrumental cues are a lot more in
depth and ornate than usual bollywood songs, thus I feel requiring a
different template for review. A short first impression review to me is much
more of an appropriate match for a song based soundtrack than a more
abstract, instrumental based soundtrack. That's all I'm saying.

Guys, this is just my opinion before anyone starts beating me over the head.
I mean no disrespect towards Karthik or anyone else's opinions by this.

I'm sorry for my thoughts of late to be somewhat disorganized and writing
multiple, long posts. These days, I'm not into a crisp mode of writing for
some reason! I'll try and get back to that mode again.

Couples Retreat †Wordlessly mind-bogglingIf A.R. Rahman had proved off his
extraordinary adeptness on Indian touch with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, he
 strikes marvelously with complete
Hollywood-fangled melodies. The tunes are stunningly melodic and indeed
aptly sound in accordance with film’s title ‘Couples Retreat’. The
original soundtrack of ‘Couples Retreat’ has 15 melodies with uniquely
 spelled attributes.

SAJNA… SAJNA ReJust heed to the fortepianos and mild-strike of chord with
crystal-chimes accompanying them. Rahman adds to the Indianized touch by
adding the Hindi word ‘Sajna Sajna Re…’ The English lyrics are
mesmerizingly touching and perhaps, the western people wouldn’t have
listened to such an appealing melody.

KURU KURU…Vocal: A.R. RahmanFine! After uttering ‘Ellam
Pugazhum Iraivan Oruvanukke’ †it’s one more turn to express his
gratitude for his TAMIL. The song starts off with slow-rhythms of 6/8 March
on soft-guitars later with slow-stringed running notes. The Tamil lyrics
tuned in complete Hollywood style happen to be the best flavors. Totting up
to the best panoramas is the unique-patterned rhythm on scissors. Sound
engineering has been marvelously performed… Doubtlessly, KURU KURU is the
 best pick of soundtrack.

Jason and Cynthia SuiteRealms of stringed instruments as it keep playing on
various octaves. The melodic notes are played on solo guitar and Cello joins
the instrumentation in latter part. Merely after couple of minutes, the song
is shifted to higher scales and it goes on with same notes. Trombones and
oboes are played in final part. Moreover, it’s the best song that sweeps all
  on your senses.

 NANAIt’s a Spanish-styled hip-hop with Blaaze’s specific vocalisms on rap
lines. The beats over the synchronized drum pads keeps repeating while
fill-ins over Brasses and trumpets over synthesizers does takes you straight
 into those ambiences.

TOUR OF THE VILASIf you ever spellbound listening to ‘SAJNA SAJNA’,
Rahman delivers the same tune over instrumentals. All through the track, the
scales are raised and lowered. Beats over Congo-drums with vibes mingled in
makes it sound yet more embellished. More than all, Rahman has utilized more
instruments on various parts, say, like cymbals, solo violin, flute and pan
 flutes.

MEETING MARCELSounds quite unique from previous numbers… It offers the
touch of meditational relaxation music with the style of percussions
inherited from Tai Chi. the melodiously refreshing tune suddenly transforms
into an emotional genre with flutes, cellos, violins and other stringed
instruments coalesced on the parts. We get to hear orchestral-hits here and
 there.

 ITINERARY

Starts off with overpowering instrumentations over percussions, keyboards and
stringed ones… Rahman has to thank his music supervisor John O’Brien for
having engineered the entire group with such grandeur. Finally, after the
fast-rushing instrumentals, you’ve Rahman’s vocalism echoing on higher
 tone.

UNDRESSWow! This is the prettiest work that any music lover would’ve heard.
 On the beginning note, we
have Mridangam, veena taking off with predominance later with sync-bass. A
 perfect ‘Jugalbandhi’ treat for everyone.

SHARKSThe track has some traces of previous number MEETING MARCEL and the
notes are almost the same. Precisely, it would be more appealing with the
 visuals on screens.

LUAU by John O’BrienMaking it blissfully done over the sound supervising,
John O’Brien scores on his show with country music with 12-string acoustic
guitars. The running beats on Congo-drums make an impressive sound.

SALVADOREThe song sounds much similar to Tamil song ‘Jumbhalaka’ that has
the prelude starting off with Arabic
intonation. The song has guitars and beats played on similar touch. As well,
it has similarities with Rahman’s previous score for ‘Mein Alabeli’ in
 ‘Zubeida’.

INTERVENTIONThe maestro roars again! Of course, put your best verdicts for
the brilliant orchestration of symphony based track. Rahman’s vocalism on
higher pitch emblazons it stunningly. If our guesses are right, the track
 should precisely be

Bravo! Great job, Suresh! Now, that's what I call a great review, doing full
justice to this exquisite soundtrack. I esp. like that you talked about the
sounds, instruments, arrangements a lot, which really do deserve specific
menttion in each track. I liked how you tried to connect the music to the
visuals, giving more meaning to each track in context. Appreciated how you
tried to put the comedy element in logical light, stating that the serious
music is for those who are the butt of the jokes and who don't find it funny,
but the rest do! Makes perfect sense! I love some of your descriptions, like,
bed of soft strings.very classy! Lastly, you very nicely put this in
perspective in comparison to Slumdog in that even though it won't gather the
same attention and perhaps level of accolades as Slumdog, it still deserves to
be celebrated as a beautifully strong entrance for Rahman into hollywood. I can
see your knowledge and ear for good music is quite refined and I really
appreciate that. The only thing I didn't agree with you was the criticism on
Sajna Re, but I respect that opinion a lot because you explained in detail why
you felt that way. Geez, I wish more people would write reviews like you
do And yes, you very correctly stated that it used the same musical
template as Dreams on Fire, which is what I thought too when I heard it.

For me, the core strength of this soundtrack is in artistic, aural, and
aesthetic beauty, not commercial potential. It's one of the most beautifully
crafted compositionally and sonically mostly acoustic album by Rahman and to
me, that's all I need to celebrate, regardless of movie success. That is the
greatest distinction between this and Slumdog, which was more of a commercial,
highly energized, stylish, electronic soundtrack. Both Slumdog and Couple's
Retreat showcase ARR's versatility amazingly and I hope people here in the West
recognize that.

Couples Retreat' Gets Hilarious Trailer

Four couples travel to an exotic couples counseling resort, only to experience
a series of mishaps and setbacks, in an upcoming comedy by Jon Favreau called
'Couples Retreat'.

Universal Pictures has debuted the first trailer for Couples Retreat on
Apple. More than two-minute long, the promotional video for the comedy movie
introduces the four main couples, Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman, Faizon Love
and Kali Hawk, Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, as well as Jon Favreau and
Kristin Davis.

The trailer helps to explain how things are going between each of the couples
before dropping the bomb that one of them is going through a rough patch. In
order to work on their problem, the troubled couple chooses to go to a lush
tropical getaway and brings along their couples friends to get a special group
price. What the others do not know is that their group-rate vacation comes at a
price.

Couples Retreat is directed by first-time helmer Peter Billingsley. The
screenplay is provided by Iron Man helmer Jon Favreau, while the music is
composed by A. R. Rahman, the Academy Award winner for his work in Slumdog
Millionaire. Jean Reno also joins the cast ensemble of this comedy movie which
will come out in U.S. theaters October 9.

ENJOY!!!

[arr] Re: Couples Retreat | AR's New Hollywood Project !

2009-05-19 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
Expecting a lot of sampling from Rahman from Indian movies as well.

i don't think so. it is a complete Hollywood production not having even remote
connection to India or East. i am expecting a complete western type of score
with not even shades of eastern music.

Here's to hoping that a tune or two of Ilayaraja also gets in there!!

i could not get what Ilayaraja's tunes got to do in a score by ARR?
