Microsoft is very fussy about patents and such; I'm sure they'd jump at the chance to sue some not-very-cash-heavy developers who're just trying to do some good in their spare time. It's supposed to be a completely clean-room reverse-engineering of windows, so don't know if they'll get anywhere, but I'm sure they'll try. It takes a lot of tweaking to get sound working in vmware player or virtualbox, and I've not had the time or inclination to do it, even if it can be done without speech at first on the guest OS. There is also this:http://sparkleshare.org/been on my big list of stuff to check out at some point for a while now. Apparently it's a dropbox clone built using git as the backend. As for file sharing, the way I handle it is to have a public BTSync folder on my linux server. That folder is owned by the apache user, and all the contents are served as an apache virtual host. A BTSync instance also runs as the apache user, to write files there.  Anything I want to share with the world gets dumped into the BTPublic folder on my local machine, and then BTSync moves it off to Linux and all I have to do is share the web address to my file.  BTPublic happens to be replicated on servers in Toronto, Ottawa, Markham, and Texas, so I give out the link closest to the person I expect to be downloading the file.  I can get at BTPublic via SFTP/HTTPS, so it also makes a good way to add files to my iPhone.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=173000#p173000

Yeah, I actually considered using git-annex to manage file versioning with a private repo and an EBS-equipped EC2 instance, but thought it was all a bit too much just to avoid the inconvenience of making a second copy. Besides then I would have to remember where all my stuff was, and TBH that's something I don't want to ever have to come back to. I don't mind really--S3+CloudFront is nice and cheap, offers automatic BitTorrent support, and everyone loves the speed. And it costs almost bugger all. Down here at home Arq is automatic and encrypted, and BTSync is a great way to share if the need arises for anything more complicated than a file, possibly large and an archive.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172998#p172998

Hi,JFW does not work with RTR at this current point in time. I also currently have very little time to work on anything, so it might be another while before I fix that.A quick word about the servers. I keep getting bugged about people who host their servers and want it to be added to the public server list. Whenever they want it added, they have to promise to me that it will be up 24/7 because I do not have the time and strength and especially patience to go through them again and again to remove the ones that do not work. I am working on a program that does this automatically, but if it was for that, no server would ever be in the list.So they promise it will be up. And a day after I add it, it's down for the rest of the decade. URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172990

Ok, well for those of you who were hoping for some miraculous revival of Lizzie, Bert's diary entry ends that hope.  She's dead.  Move on.  I was unsurprised, though it was affecting, as much for the acting in that scene as for the story.  I think that both Lizzie's and Datu's death were marvelously portrayed and well written, but I've seen her death coming since we found out she was pregnant.  Call it a hunch. And very nice build of suspense with Bert and Riley throughout this week's episode.  Interesting to see where that goes.  Brace yourselves for some truly awful things to happen with Scratch following the colony and nobody but Bert and Riley knowing about it with malfunctioning radios.I begin to wonder if there's going to be enough people left to recover, even if the series ends with the end of the outbreak.URL: http

Ambro, dash in english can mean the hyphen key, but it can also mean to move quickly, to run. Usually if you hear dash used in a game, it means that it's an ability to allow you to run. You can use dash in two ways. You can either press the arrow key twice quickly, or you can hold down the arrow key and then press the action button, which is enter by default on the keyboard. You do not actually need to hold the action button, though I usually end up doing it because that's how it works in most games, lol.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172968#p172968

Re: [Audiogames-reflector] simular series to the wheel of time

2014-04-22 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — Off-topic room: themadviolinist

Re: simular series to the wheel of time

I'll second the recommendation for the Mistborn series, which has a wonderfully realized world with off-kilter magic and amazing political complexity.  I'll also add to the praise for Game of Thrones et al.  There is magic, but its very different from most fantasy series and seems as we learn more and more about it that it always comes at a very high cost.I've just started reading Steven brust's Vlad Taltos novels, which I had heard good things about that I was happy when I found it on Audible.  It appears to do some interesting things around magic and politics, and I rather adore the main character, who reminds me of a far less whiny Harry Dresden.Oh and of course there's the Harry Dresden novels, which you must read in order to learn about Butcher's marvelous magical world, parts of which are revealed in each book.  While Harry himself is as I said sometimes rather whiny, he is also a snarky bastard and I admire tha
t in a main character who is usually outnumbered and outgunned in most of the stories.  This one is excellent for the world-building more than the character, though many of the supporting characters are awesome.Another set of series like that are the Stephen R. Donaldson Chronicles of Thomas Covenant et all.  I think we're up to ten plus books, though I believe the last one was just released to the library of Congress.  Thomas Covenant starts out the series as a true shit heel, whiny biatch with the effectiveness of wet toilet paper, but gradually stumbles, then grows into some power.  The world and supporting cast are lovely, the villains truly awful, the allies independent, flawed and ultimately quite heroic each in their way.  This one's definitely a matter of taste, my wife would like to retroactively provide Donaldson's mother with more effective contraception to prevent the publication of "that pile of crap" as she calls
the series.  Let's see, while it's not a series in the way that Wheel of Time is, the Newford Chronicles by Charles deLint are just about the best in modern urban fantasy.  If you like fairies with your urban landscapes, these are fantastic and can break your heart. It's not a series, but at something like 40 hours of narration, Neil Stephenson's Anathegm might as well be.  It's one of the only examples of the successful marriage of high fantasy and science fiction I can think of.  The version on Audible.com also comes with a lovely score, which I just learned you can purchase an album of separately.  Hmmm, that sentence escaped containment, oh well, y'all hopefully know what I mean. The five novels in the Earthsea books are a fundamental part of any fantasy literature reader's basic literacy.  Ursula LeGuin creates a lovely world from Celtic and Norse tropes.  The original three novels were cl
assified as young adult, but that doesn't really fit them, or at least there's rich material for teens and adults alike.  The fourth and fifth novels are definitely more adult in tone.  There aren't many books that leave me crying at the end, but the Other Side of the Wind, (the fifth book) did so.Well, that's about three years worth of reading.  Enjoy.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172967#p172967

2014-04-22 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — New releases room: bladestorm360

Re: Advanced Fallen Worlds

Just wanted to bring this topic back up, since there have been a lot of updates.Firstly, there was just a new arena layout released that actually makes battling quite a bit easier. Cards are now not on full display, but instead displayed by abreviations. For example, if you have something called Great Plains, instead of showing the entire card, it will say G. Plains. It's all in a nice clean list layout, at least with jaws, and everything is easy to read and accessible without as much screen wandering. Cards also stack, so if you have 3 of the same scenario card in play, it will say 3 G. Plains instead of having a listing for each card.Resources have been rebalanced again. You receive 1 resource per resource card in play, but you now have a maximum resource pool. I believe it's 3 plus 1 for every scenario in play. So if you had 4 scenarios in play, you'd have a maximum resource pool of 7.There have been more accessibility updates, and the lag is
sue has been fixed. You also have received coins now for each card from the old game that hasn't yet been ported over if you had an existing account. So if you played the old game, you should have enough coins to buy several booster packs now. 6 players can now play at a time, 3 on each side, and there is a larger selection of bots to choose from. The game is constantly being updated and there are more improvements and expansion sets to come, but it could really use more players. If anyone was having trouble playing before, you might consider trying again with the new arena layout.Hope to see you there.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172966#p172966

Re: [Audiogames-reflector] web browser games: interesting or boaring?

2014-04-22 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — General Game Discussion: pitermach

Re: web browser games: interesting or boaring?

I personally found browser games not very interesting. Most really boiled down to going somewhere and killing someone - click this link to go to this dungeon, then click that link, keep clicking it until the monster dies, maybe check something occasionally, repeat. Some also have turn limits which I also found quite frustrating. That said, people like different experiences, so what I consider borring may actually be quite rewarding to someone else. Oh yeah, and I also very much like gamebooks and those do run in a browser. So do the choice of games, if you know how to set it up.All this being said, if developers would start to develop browser based audio games, things could get very interesting thanks to the webaudio API's. Here are a few demos, which will work in pretty much every browser, except IE (microsoft is always really slow at catching up to web standards)there's this synth] which
has 3 oscilators (these are all generated live). You can tweak them separately and it also has reverb. If you have a midi keyboard then you can apparently play it with that as well. This particular site also has a few other demos, one of which adds effects to live audio from the microphone. Very impressive.Speaking of synths, there's also this one that fastfinge discovered, which is also very cool. Although some effects didn't seem to work right in Firefox (EG the reverb was very scratchy), but Chrome and Safari work just fine. This one just lets you add a couple of effects to a few loops. the effects do sound very realistic. And then there's this Demo which was featured by Mozilla when Firefox gained webaudio support. This one makes full use of HRTF and spacial effects, which basica
lly means it's using the same technology as somethin' else for Papasangre, plus things like walls bounce the sound off so it sounds, well, very good. When this one starts you can use w-s-a-d to walk, and if you click just right you can also look around with the mouse (and yes, up/down also works here)So yeah. The technology is there, just no one is using it yet.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172964#p172964

On novice, almost every time. On apprentice, about 50-75% of the time. On adept, about 25-50% of the time. On expe
rt, rarely. (You can see your current difficulty by typing "score".)It's certainly true that some games are easier than others, but that's part of the roguelike fun. A good example is Israfel, one of the level 4 enemies. If you can defeat Israfel, it gives you a very, very good power. You're almost guaranteed to beat Malygris with it. But Israfel is quite strong, probably stronger than the other level 4 enemies. So depending on how your game is going, it might sometimes be smartest to just skip Israfel, and try to beat Malygris with another combination of powers -- maybe a level 3, 2 and 1 power, if possible.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172961#p172961

Re: Kerkerkruip 9 released

themadviolinist wrote:Now a game play comment.  Have you considered giving a damage bonus for beating the defense rating by a sufficient margin, say +1 damage for beating by 6 +1 per additional full three.  Example: I roll a 20 and with other bonuses, I beat the defense rating by 15, I'd score 4 extra damage?  Seems this would make 20s more special.  Of course they'd get to do that too which could ruin one's day.I originally added the possibility of rolling 20 in order to ensure that every attack could be a hit. That means that as a player you'll always have a chance to hit even the baddest enemy, and even a puny monster still has a chance to hit you. So it's not supposed to be "critical hit", just a "free hit".Your idea might still be good, of course. But there are two reasons I don't think it would be a good match for Kerkerkruip. First, it makes the game more random in a way that disadvantages the player. More randomness always disadvantages the player -- since the player wins most fights, making fights more random means he'll be losing more often -- but in this case it would also decrease the player's ability to judge whether or not he was still safe in a fight. If monsters can suddenly get big damage bonuses, they can ruin your day in ways that you couldn't have foreseen.Second, you would get the weird situation that weak monsters -- who mostly or only hit you when they roll 20 -- will always or almost always deal bonus damage. It's like Dungeons & Dragons second edition, where a peasant would hit a level 20 character exactly 5% of the time -- when rolling 20 -- and would then always do critical damage. That's just weird and counterintuitive. You can solve that the way it was solved in third edition -- have the attacker make a second attack roll, and only deal critical damage when both are hits -- but I feel that that is too complicated. So, while I can certainly see the logic of your idea, I think there are some arguments against adopting it.Is there a way to create items or monsters for the dungeon?  Could such a construction be created?  I do keep running into new items, but it would be fun to add some personal touches into my games.Well, you can create items or monsters by downloading the source code and programming them! :-) There would be really no way to make an easy and powerful item/monster creator in the game itself except by basically reimplementing the Inform 7 programming language in the game itself. That would be a waste of everyone's efforts. If you'd like to try your hand at creating some stuff, let me know. Inform 7 is a fun language to learn, and I've even written some tutorials for Kerkerkruip, which you can find here: http://www.intfiction.org/forum/viewtop … amp;t=5694URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172960#p172960

Re: panning in bgt

There can be uses for multiple sound pools, but they strike me as kinda advanced (for audio games, anyway). For example, if you want to use different volume_step / pan_step settings for different types of sounds (for example, to simulate perilax on distant ambiences). Or if you expect to need to use pause_all or destroy_all on one group of sounds but not others (this one seems less useful, but it's possible).I've only done this deliberately once, though; my games ported from java do use multiple pools, but as a porting artifact, since the SoundBuffers in the java version couldn't play multiple instances of the same sound simultaneously.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172959#p172959

Re: I have no passion in life

I definitely agree about the journaling thing. I have had online journals--or blogs--on a few different sites. To date all of them have been abandoned, but not because I don't know what to write. I abandoned most of them due to accessibility concerns, and my most recent one was abandoned because my website got deleted. That's because my account got shut down due to me acquiring this Mac. It is a Windows-based service and I am arguing back and forth with my parents about running Windows on here and signing up for another account. Well not arguing, but my parents seem to have a different opinion than me in this regard. The service to which I'm referring here is SAMNet, the System Access Mobile Network. The reason I set up a website on there in the first place was  because of the accessibility. But I guess this is a discussion which I'm going to have to continue with my parents.Regarding being social, I have never really had an issue with that. What I
do have a problem with though, is independent outdoor travel. But I've discussed that on here already, so I won't revisit it. I just hope that a better solution is found soon though, otherwise I'll turn into a hermit. I don't want that and I've also been told this by other people around me, including my family. As far as bullying is concerned, I never really experienced that. There were 2 minor instances of it though. The first took place when I was little. My family and I were at our local swimming pool, and some guy came up to me and asked what the paper was inside my undergarment. He was referring to the tag that tells me which way they go on. But now that I've given it some thought, that wasn't bullying in the true sense. However, I did experience something several years later which was akin to bullying. Although it really upset me and has caused me to really think twice about things, I am still able to talk about it. A sister and I were at hom
e having lunch when the phone rang. I was still living with my parents at the time. I went over and picked up the phone. On the other end was the voc/rehab counselor I had at the time. He was joined by his supervisor, who had previously been my counselor. I could tell they were on speaker-phone because of the echo. They chewed me out just for writing a letter requesting more services. I should point out here that this new counselor had previously phoned me to introduce himself, and to assure me that no past events would be repeated and that he would see to it that things were straightened out. He was very friendly on that call. Then, he has the nerve to call me up and chew me out. But anyway, that was not pleasant. I also had a mudball thrown at me in nursery school, but that's about all I remember other than one of the teachers intervening in the situation. I recently tried commenting on another person's blog about my lack of "real world" experiences particularl
y related to the movie "Blindness", and she then posted an entire entry about my lack of experience with discrimination. Those of you who are members of either blindness organization can probably guess which organization she's in. This was right after I saw that movie with a group of friends. So I guess in part you could say I'm not motivated enough to do much of anything in the realm of advocacy.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172951#p172951

Re: latin

A lot of discussion here that I can't speak on simply because I don't want to get in over my head. But the Bible is not actually black and white clear on what speaking in tongues actually is, other than that it's part of being filled by the holy spirit. The day of Pentecost sees disciples in a house who were all praying aloud and suddenly starting speaking in strange languages to the point where people thought they were drunk. so speaking in tongues isn't just limitted to everyone receiving the message in their own language... also there are certain people with the gift of interpretation who can say what someone means when they speak in tongues. and though I haven't seen it myself, I've heard enough from people I trust to know that some of those occasions can't be faked, either. So what may sound like gibberish to me may be intelligible to someone else who has that particular spiritual gift.Dark, I definitely agree it can be off-putting wh
en you come across people who are so ultimately. opposed to all things not themselves. The first time I met an elder in my church who was unbelievably anti-catholic I was pretty shocked, especially when I found out he used to be one. And your friend definitely sounds impressive... and I didn't mean my friend was honestly a horrible Catholic. It's more a joke and a tease at his lack of participation in Catholic traditions. He knows where his faith is, he just doesn't think the worldly traditions are as important as some people make them out to be.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172955#p172955

Re: panning in bgt

Yeah, that's what I said. Just having different sound pools is not going to increase or decrease the loading lag by any amount in any way, there is no reason to. For music, ambience and other individual sounds like this that I need to manipulate often semi-statically, in other words I know what file is going to be played through them at what moment and with what exact settings, or if it simply feels more convenient to treat the single sound separately, I use the good old individual sound objects. I find this the best solution. So, in my working development scripts I have just a single sound pool and between approximately 3 to 5 separate sound objects. This has really proved to work the best for me.HTH,LukasURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172944#p172944

Just Checking In

Hi there,I haven't been as active as I should because my MacBook suffered some water damaage that was caused by a cup that overturned onto it. However, this was the four time that I had to take it in to be serviced, and this time I was desperate not to lose myinformation a third time. So, when I ttook it into the Apple store, I asked them if the hard drive was still functioning. The genius told me that the drive showing up, and that they saw two partitions. on it. There are two politicians on it karmaUncle Ben parked the car near the low entrance he had discovered behind the pyramid. They could only back up the Mac side, but I would have to back up the windows side on my own. I asked the genius this time, how does one back up a hard drive onto another? They gave me the answer I should have gotten a long time ago. You should buy a hard disc enclosure. So, for the next day or so, I had to go to two more stores to figure out where to get these pieces. I had
to buyy a Philips scre driver and a T-four, five and six screw driver as well. NNot only that, but when I got back home with the stuff, I had to figure out where the hard drrrive was. Fortunately from my short computer experience, I had to find something that looked like a hard drive that was screwed into the compartment. I spent several days trying to figure out which screws I had to undo to lift that drive oout of its place, and by the time I managed to take it out, I had almost given up hope that I would ever recover my valuables. But, when I undid the last screw, I gave one last tug, hoping tht I had done it, and sure enough, I did. I felt so relieeved that I did a wwild happy dance. I finaly set to work on connecting it to the disc enclosure and I spent the next two days organising my files on my desktop's hard drive. Now I have no fear or worry that my information would be lost should they.  replace the hard drive.SSo, this is where I am. I am tryin
g to figure out if the American Council of the Blind or the Glenn Fisher Foundation can provide grants to cover the cost oof seven hundred fifty-five dollars, aas Apple Care won't cover water damagees. So, this is where I am now.I have also been getting myself ready to sky-dive this summer, so I have been very busy getting in shape on the challenge courses and trying to atttend as many work shops devottted to such and getting a hold of the wavers so I could read them and sign them ahead of time. I was also tryying o see if there were any recordings of people who sky-dived on this forum, since all I find aon-line is music and images, which we can't see. If that is the case, I may have to record it on mmy own and be one of the first to post something like that. I know Allen Paganelli posted his recording of what it was like to fly inside a small Cesna-172, but this kkkind of aircraft is a scenic ffflight I think. Since I might have wanted to manipulate the ambience and other things separately, I thought it would be a better idea to have at least 2, one to handle ambience, thus reducing any potential lag, and one for the rest of the sounds (adding more if needed, ti also increase readbility and ease-of-maintaining, in theory).Although after converting my code to use the sing sound pool, it doesn't seem at least at the moment to have introduced much more lag than was there previously.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172941#p172941

That's because auto fielding does not exist in that game. I don't think so anyway.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172935#p172935

Re: panning in bgt

Is it really necessary to use multiple sound pools? I try to avoid this at all costs and recommend doing the same. If you load all your sounds right before they are about to be played, in other words you don't load them anywhere specifically at all and they only get read and triggered through the play functions of the sound_pool class, there is no reason why having multiple pools should reduce the loading times. If you have dozens or hundreds of sounds in your game, I recommend loading them all in advance (see the performance optimizations tutorial) and then just playing them through the one single sound pool. You won't need to care about the array of preloads any further then, it's there just to make sure that the sounds are loaded into memory first of all and that they stay there no matter when they are needed, unless you explicitly clear the array.LukasURL: http://forum.audiogames

Re: Grail to the Thief: An Interactive Audio Adventure

There may be a few Easter egg style secrets, but I don't want to spoil anything by saying more. The story in Grail to the Thief was written to allow for episodic sequels to the game, and if it's well received, we would like to develop additional, longer entries that follow Hank and TEDI on other time travel adventures.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172932#p172932

thanks, useful to note.  It's good that multiple soundpools can be used, I'm currently using one for ambience and a different one for other sounds, I thought it would reduce loading times...URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172931#p172931

Re: screenreader landscape in 2014

I've been using jaws since version 3.2 came out circa late 90s. I've been experimenting with NVDA for a few months now and the biggest problem I'm having is breaking the old jaws habbits learned from years of repetition. I still miss Jaws's links list window. I disagree with one of the previous posters who said braille support was the best in Jaws. Another thing NVDA does for me is allowing me to use an old navigator 80 whose functionality FS disabled back in Jaws 11 for some unknown reason. Now with regard to how each screen reader accesses screen content, using dedicated accessibility APIs is good, but unfortunately its not a catch all solution. Jaws's method of screen scraping is particularly useful when dealing with proprietary software packages used in the media industry. NVDA will just say "unknown", where as Jaws will at least give you a bit more information.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172930#p172930

Yeah, as long as your sound_pool is global, you can do it mostly anywhere. I myself usually do it as one of the very first instructions in my main function.LukasURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172929#p172929

Re: latin

I had a similar experience to that Tom at university. I went to what I believed to be a christian meditation group, only to find that the person leading the group began with talking about countering satan's influence in the world, and asked everyone to  prey to avoid evil influences, such as homosexuals, those  none christians etc.I  considdered voicing my beliefs but in the end made an excuse and left pretty quickly sinse I just felt I could not  be in a room with people  who claimed to be preying to and contemplating God and yet were expressing such a huge amount of hatred. This was actually a shock for me, considdering that not long previously to that I had actually been on an  interfaith  pilgrimage which involved going to a variety of different places of worship including Hindu and siekh temples, a sinagog, a unitarian chapple and catholic and  church of england churches (we should've gone to a mosque but had the
wrong day), so it was something of a shock after experiencing the general openness of religious belief to be hit with the opposite. I had encountered several people with beliefs previously I didn't agree with, but that was the first time I actively felt uncomfortable in a place of worship due to profound intollerance. I suspect if I were in the states I probably would abstain from church as well for precisely this reason.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172927#p172927

Re: simular series to the wheel of time

Hi Slj. I'm currently watching the game of thrones tv series myself, but I wanted to read the books first and I'm glad I did. While it's one of the best adaptations to tv I've seen (far better than say the legend of the seaker series was relative to Terry goodkind's books), likely because Martin himself has helped with the screenplay, there are still things that don't come across on T and other things that were   condensed.  I will say the series went off a bit in the third and fourth books partly because Martin separated out the action between the different countries, and partly because Martin was planning a five year time skip which idea he subsequently abandoned. Things however were very much picking up in the  fifth book and while some characters stories were somewhat put on hold, I think the sixth should pick things up again for an awsome conclusion in the 7th and final book. I'm just hoping ma
rtin doesn't take too long to write the sixth book sinse I know there was a ridiculously long wait between the fourth and fifth, though Martin has said while he's not giving actual publication dates sinse he doesn't want to disappoint anyone he does hope the sixth will be done relatively quickly.  Actually in terms of expected books I'm more concerned about Sanderson, sinse he has started or  partly completed many series, but instead of finishing them he  starts more. We're waiting on the  fifth mistborn novel (very odd sinse he just about finished the series in the third in a very conclusive way), the second books in the rythmetist and steelheart series, and even the 5th alcatraz book, not to mention  stormlight archive of course. I hope he gets to some of these projects and doesn't leave people hanging.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopi
