Just in case someone will be looking for info - there are few opinions
on AE5 in the thread below:

I was thinking along the same lines. Given that you (Moshulu) think
that you understand the limitations of the MP3 player and format, it
should be clear that you cannot consider your comparison to be a fair
one. If the Audioengines were so good that they revealed the MP3
limitations, then they would be punished for being so revealing.

If you use the SB3 and FLAC as the source for both, then you may or may
not arrive at the same conclusion. If you have the time, I would be
curious to know what you experience. Thanks.

2007-03-16 Thread Craig

I have a pair mounted high up in my kitchen and apart from having to use
the Inguz plugin to remove a bit of boxiness they sound fine, and
they're pretty powerfull too.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audioengine 5 thread

2007-03-16 Thread Kyle

I've got a pair in my small office playing flac files directly through
an external, 24-bit sound card. Since I'm playing at mostly low volume
in an office setting, I use an equalizer to boost bass and treble
response. However, I took them to the beach recently because my beach
stereo ($1,000 list Denon CD/DVD system) was in the shop. I used an
SB2 to play flac files in a much larger room (700 sq. ft.) at a much
higher volume than my office. They handled the task better than the
Denon system with higher maximum volume. Although bass response was
impressive, I did hook up the Denon sub for a little extra kick. I'm
certainly no audiophile when it comes to spending thousands on
equipment, but I do appreciate clean, detailed audio with nice and
punchy, but not overblown, bass. I'd recommend the Audioengines for
any sub-audiophile application.

To me that includes everywhere except a place where I *really* focus on
music. Mind you, I hate *bad* sound, but I don't need audiophile
reference sound wherever I go - I just need musicality and balance. I
always have the reference sound for the music in my ears, thus as long
as it doesn't offend me, and I can hear one or the other detail that I
find cool, I am ready.

For example, in my home office I have a 7 year old set of Monsoon 700
for my PC - and they sound great, I *enjoy* listening to music through
them (and they have the visual cool of being little dipole-radiating
planar speakers) even though they were all of $150 at the time. Amazing
staging, you feel ike there's a little Liliputian orchestra hideen
behind your flat panel. :-)

They Audioengines sound like they will keep up and then some. Which is
all I need in the bedroom, honestly. I am no fan of exaggerated bass,
but typically my main gripe about some settings is lack of bass
extension and control, and some subwoofer systems -as my Monsoon 700-
have a musical subwoofer, desgied to cplement the sound and not shake
the walls. Even some over $1k monitor speakers are severly lacking in
bass delivery when compared to larger setups, so I think the
Audioengines may sound better in some places and for some application
than expensive studio monitors.

The AE5's have a passive woofer port on the back that needs some room.
The setup guide recommend 6-12 inches between the back of the speaker
and the rear wall for best bass response. They're only rated down to
60 Hz, but I'm often impressed with the bass response when listening to
music. I think you'll be pleased with their performance.

They should probably be compared to something like a modest NAD or Rotel
amp and a good $200 set of unpowered speakers. That's really the market
they are competing with.

Well, this is where they probably stand, but since I have no idea how
$200 speakers sound, I intentionally asked for a comparison with more
expensive gear... Not what's better, but rather how much worse they
are.

But here we come to the next question - can one do better for the
money? Not for exactly $349.99, but, well, this price range...

Maybe, maybe not. It depends on the setup. It would not be the first
time I see someone with a supposed audiophile setup abuse the loudness
setting because of a bass complex. Again - some monitor speakers are
lacking when it comes to foorstanding designs with more volume. It's
natural - not many passive monitor speakers focus on bass delivery.
It's application driven.

Audioengine 5 active speakers have been mentioned many times lately, but
the contexts were so different it's quite difficult to get more less
clear picture of how good or bad they are for a person used to
 audiophile quality gear.

If anyone compared, or heard and remembers the impression on how they
sound comparing to low- or mid- priced audiophile integrated amp with
*unpowered* bookshelf speakers - please post here.

I don't think it's fair to compare them to WATT/Puppy speakers driven
by Lamm monoblocks, therefore I'm looking into comparison with up to
$1000-1500 amp, and the same price range speakers. Yes, I know it's 10
times more, but the purpose of this thread is to get the overall
picture of where Audioengine stands relatively to the real stuff.

One thing to keep in mind is that how good something sounds is
correlated to how much clean audio power they can emit and the size of
room used for listening.

My mini Warfdale Diamond 8.1 and a T-Amp sound very good in my small
office, but I'm sure they would sound puny in a larger room.

Funny - this very evening I set up a pair of Audioengine 5s. So I can't
help responding, even though I cannot provide the desired comparison.
My new speakers are installed in a tiny kitchen, on top of the
refigerator. They are driven by a Zune - Microsoft's Ipod clone. I
like the sound very much, and the esthetics/workmanship are very high.
Overall, they exceed my expectations, especially considering the price
(alas, the same in euros as the US price in dollars). I only wish the
power switch was in the front. The USB charging port is a nice
 feature.

I sometimes listen to the Zune through Grado SR125 headphones, so I
think that I understand the limitations of the MP3 player and format.
Given this, I would say that the AE5s are very nice bookshelf
amplifier-speakers, but by no stretch of the imagination do they
 qualify as audiophile grade.

Just for yuks, I set the AE5s up in the living room first, next to the
Klipsch RF5s which are driven by my home-built 300B single-ended
monblocks. These are tricked out with lots of boutique components
(Black Gates, Jensens, etc.) and get their inputs from an SB3 via a
battery-powered Monica2 DAC. I played the same tunes through the
SB3/Flac and the Zune/MP3. Well...let's just say that the Audioengines
are going to remain on kitchen duty.

 moshulu

I thought you might want to make a closer comparison by connecting SB3
and DAC to AE5 and listen to the same flacs...
