I would really like to see the compatibility with lookout.el and csv.el to be restored, if possible. To my untrained eyes it looks like lookout.el is trying to define new BBDB fields to use for undefined fields in the csv file generated by Outlook; these fields will be defined by a user set variable as "otherfields". It seems these are added to the 'bbdb-props' list, and I guess that these are subsequently used when importing the data. I just did a write-up of how to use csv.el and lookout.el with BBDB 2.35 to successfully import contacts if this may help. Import Outlook contacts to BBDB (using v.2.35) == * Import Outlook contacts + Export Outlook contacts To import Outlook contacts to BBDB, the first step is to open Outlook and export all contacts as csv (comma separated values). + Get lookout.el and csv.el Get [lookout.el] and [csv.el] (both at [Ulf Jasper's emacs page]). Add these to your load path and require. [lookout.el]: http://ulf.epplejasper.de/downloads/lookout.el [csv.el]: http://ulf.epplejasper.de/downloads/csv.el [Ulf Jasper's emacs page]: http://ulf.epplejasper.de/Emacs.html + Customise lookout-bbdb-mapping-table The 'lookout-bbdb-mapping-table' tells lookout how to map the field names encountered in the .csv file to bbdb. The easiest way to do this is probably to define a new mapping constant in .init.el. In lookout.el, there's a default mapping for a German Outlook (not sure if this is up to date, but it shows the principles). Copy this to your init file and edit the fields as necessary. I chose the following mapping for my English Outlook. (defconst lookout-bbdb-mapping-table-outlook-english '( ("firstname" "Title" "First Name" "Middle Name") ("lastname" "Last Name" "Suffix") ("company" "Company" "Department" "Job Title") ("net" "E-mail Address" "E-mail 2 Address") ("phones" "Home Phone" "Home Phone 2" "Mobile Phone" "Business Phone" "Business Phone 2" "Other Phone") ("addr1" "Home Street" "Home City" "Home Postal Code" "Home Country") ("addr2" "Business Street" "Business City" "B usiness State" "Business Postal Code" "Business Country") ("addr3" "addr3") ("notes" "Notes") ("otherfields" "Web Page" "Office Location" "Business Fax" "Other Fax" ) "Mapping table, usable for input from English M$ Outlook (based on German example in lookout.el)." "this is a description of the variable") ) (you should modify the mapping to suit your fields) Then use this constant as the mapping by adding to the init file: (setq lookout-bbdb-mapping-table 'lookout-bbdb-mapping-table-outlook-english) + BACK UP YOUR DATABASE Before you start the import, make sure you have backed up your database, as the import may overwrite existing records (but should prompt), and in general anything may go awry. Test with a blank database and then do a merge if it looks ok. + USE THE RIGHT VERSION OF BBDB! (= BBDB v.2.35) BBDB v.3 cannot use lookout.el, due to it's usage of e.g. 'bbdb-add-new-field', 'bbdb-propnames' and 'bbdb-record-getprop', which have all been removed from BBDB v.3. Maybe there's a replacement and BBDB v.3
bbdb-add-new-field missing in bbdb3 (using lookout.el and csv.el fails)
Hi, I have tried to get my outlook contacts into bbdb for some time with various (=none) success. The best method on Linux seems to be lookout.el and csv.el in conjunction [1]. lookout.el is however using a bbdb function, *bbdb-add-new-field*, that has *disapeared* in bbdb3. As a lisp amateur, I plunged ahead and copied across the function from bbdb 2.35, but of course this doesn't work (theres a bbdb-propnames that has since been obsoleted, and this is omnipresent in the old code and nowhere to be found in the new code). Has the 'bbdb-add-new field' been replaced in bbdb3, or is it removed? In short, how can I restore it to make lookout.el and csv.el work? The main problem I have with using Windows, is that it is on a corporate machine I have no control over and extremely limited access to (I guess, a standard office computer these days) that I have to use for work, hence contacts getting into Outlook. Hence the idea to keep a contacts file in pst format on a USB-stick and sync the data at home where I can configure the necessary applications. BBDB 3 and lookout.el (importing .csv file into bbdb contacts)
Hi all, I have tried for some time to get lookout.el to import my contacts from a csv-file into bbdb, but am on the verge of giving up, so before finally ditching the attempts (again); Is there *anyone* out there that have successfully migrated .csv contacts into bbdb (bbdb 3), and how? PROBLEM: I have a lot of legacy contacts in outlook, and want to get all this into BBDB. TRIED SOLUTION: The best method I have found seems to be to export from outlook to .csv format and then use lookout.el (which requires csv.el) to import the csv-file into bbdb. After failing to import the csv-file generated by outlook, I tried a minimal example to get the import working as below: 1. Obtain csv.el [1] and lookout.el [2], put these in emacs load path and include them in init.el. 2. To make lookout read the csv-file, I created a new variable in init.el and then set the lookout-bbdb-mapping-table to use it. , | (defconst lookout-bbdb-mapping-table-outlook-english | '( | ("firstname" "First Name") | ("lastname" "Last Name") | ("phones" "Home Phone") | ("net" "E-mail Addres") | | ("company" "company") | ("addr1" "addr1") | ("addr2" "addr2") | ("addr3" "addr3") | ("notes" "notes") | ("otherfields" "otherfields") | ) | "this is a description of the variable" | ) ` , | (setq lookout-bbdb-mapping-table 'lookout-bbdb-mapping-table-outlook-english) ` 3. Aliases questions (autocompletion)
Hi all, I have started using aliases in bbdb and wonder if there is any setup to autocomplete on defined aliases in the headers? Say, I have an alias named "listofmembers" and want to mail them. I add this mail-alias field to all relevant contacts, then in the "To" header type the full alias "listofmembers" followed by TAB, this fills in the "To" header with the group members email as expected. However, I would like to enable TAB completion on alias names, e.g. if I type "lis" and TAB this should ideally fill in the rest. Is this possible to achieve? Second question, is there a clever way to list all mail aliases in BBDB, and subsequently list all members of o select mail alias? I am using bbdb 3.02 with No Gnus 0.18. org-bbdb-anniversaries gives error 'bad sexp'
I just went back to bbdb 3.02 after having lingered with bbdb 2.35 for a while. I have set up an org-agenda that includes anniversaries in the agenda view from the bbdb database, but this breaks with bbdb 3.02 giving the error 'bad sexp'. I set up the agenda file using (from org-mode 6.33x info section 10.3.1): * Anniversaries :PROPERTIES: :CATEGORY: Anniv :END %%(org-bbdb-anniversaries) Any ideas? BBDB 3.02 bbdb/gnus-edit-notes not working
Ok, so I have reverted to bbdb 2.35 to test the ';' (bbdb/gnus-edit-notes) functionality, and using this function adds the sender to the database if not already present, as explained in the info files. If there is an International Standard, supported by an Organisation (yes, ISO was intentionally capitalised), it should be adhered to, unless there is compelling evidence to the contrary (of outstanding benefit). I think, in this case, it is merely a topic of custom and practice I think, and if any practice is to be adopted for an application with international usage, an internationally accepted standard should be adhered to, if at least to support and strengthen the collaborative effort, which I believe FOSS and Gnu is all about. If bbdb is going to use any country abbreviations, they should be according to ISO is my opinion. However, as far as I am aware, postcodes do not appear in ISO and should be locally (user) specified. -- Johnny -- The ultimate all-in-one performance toolkit: Intel(R) Parallel Studio XE: Pinpoint memory and threading errors before they happen. BBDB 3.x documentation
As I am occasionaly fiddling around with the new BBDB (3.02) to get a nice set-up and using the old documentation to get around, every now and then I encounter the changes in e.g. parameter names. I guess the new version will reside on Savannah also in the future (and not Sourceforge that seems to hold the previous development branch), but currently there's no documentation on Savannah (right?).
