Re: [Chevelle-List] Taller spindle conversion

2002-11-20 Thread Rjmmyers
Hi Guys,
I missed the earlier thread about the tall spindle set up, but will add my $.02 anyway.
I have a 65 elky and I used tall spindles from a 78 buick wagon along with the l1e iroc z 12" rotors. I also used a complete global west suspension set up front and rear.  I replaced the 9" drums out back with 11" drums with praise dyno shoes. WOW, this car stops. I used a power booster from a firebird with the firebird prop valve and this thing stops better than my wife`s caddy STS with 4 wheel discs.
I know there is controversy about global west, but with my AGR quick ratio box and the global components, the car REALLY handles. Not as well as the STS, but I had a buddy who owns a late firebird formula swear it handles better than the bird. I spent a ton on the suspension and brakes, but do not regret a dime. This elky will put a smile on you face after the first turn. Bob Myers, NC

John,

I know the 17119 kit I bought through Summit had both tailpipe
options...behind the rear wheel or almost to the rear bumper. Who's to
say what it is now, eh?

I'd be interested to hear what they say about the two kits and not only
the mufflers. If there are truly two kits that depend on the wheelbase
and they are lumping all 64-72 A-bodies into the two kits, then there is
more of a problem. Remember, the 68 and up have 112" vs. 116" (coupe to
Elky/wagon), where the 67 at least is 115" for all models.

Buying all the parts new requires a hefty chunk of
change so I'm not convinced yet it's worth the cost. My old 68 El Camino with
PST polygraphite bushings in front, Del-a-lum in the rear boxed arms,Hellwig 1
1/4" front swaybar & 1" rear,KYB shocks,and 17x8 TT II wheels all around
with BFG Comp T/A ZR tires was a very good handler. Not a slot car but
nonetheless a fun car to drive daily.
FWIW,bigger brakes have little to do with
better handling. Also,if running 17" or larger diameter wheels,it costs about
the same amount to purchase 13" brakes as 12"s.

Hi Dale,

How are you finding which muffler comes with which kit? I checked out the
links you posted, but I'm still wondering how you found them. When I cruise
around their site, I don't see where the info is listed.

I am looking at the Chevy application chart, and the 2 kits are listed on
the same line. The 52456 (5-inch 50 series) is highlighted by a black block
with white type, so I was assuming that this means that these are the
mufflers that come with both kits. Also, I have been checking other catalogs
and have seen the 17119 listed saying that it comes with 50 series mufflers.
Also, in my phone calls with them, I do believe they said that both kits
come with 50 series mufflers. I'll have to check it out tomorrow because
they are closed for the day.

-Original Message-

The wheelbase (for 1967's anyway) is 115" for all models. I think it's
the 68 and up that the wagon/Elky is 4" longer (116" vs. 112") so for a
pre-68 Elky or wagon, would you need the longer 17120 kit? Since the
kits are really ~universal~ GM A-body from 64-72, it would behoove the
buyer to be aware of the wheel base of their car before ordering to
ensure they get a kit that will fit.

The mufflers are not even the same - at least according to the
FlowMaster website. The muffler numbers were taken straight off their
website. I went to What's New and did a search on the two kits. The
17119 kit shows all the parts at
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/openrd/showthread.php?s=3a1868eda897
63744ed542d02d49ba76&threadid=319&highlight=17119

The 17120 kit shows all its parts at
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/openrd/showthread.php?s=3a1868ed
a89763744ed542d02d49ba76&threadid=318&highlight=17120 clearly showing
different mufflers.

Let's see...the $30 less expensive kit ($299 vs. $329) has $60 more in
muffler costs ($109x2=$218 vs. $80x2=$160) so the longer (albeit
different) pipes and the stainless steel tips (which may be correct for
68 and up ?) cars costs $88 more in the long run? The $30 difference
would make more sense if both kits had the same mufflers, but again,
according to their website, they don't have the same mufflers. Am I
missing something here or have the parts included in the kits been
changed and the website (plus their .PDF catalog file) does not reflect
what is really included?

John,

On their home page of
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/indexf5.html, I clicked the
~It's New~ button on the left. From the nav bar at the top of the page
I clicked ~search~. I input the American Thunder part number (from
their .PDF file you mention) in the ~Search By Keyword~ block and it
turns up one item found. You can either click the link to 17119 (with
the paperclip) under the ~Thread~ column heading and it shows an
exploded view of the parts that are in the 17119. Same was done with
the 17120 kit.

If you click the ~Kit Diagram Database~ link (instead of the part number
found), it displays a list of all the kits and their components.

I suppose it's possible that the designs and specs changed since these
were drawn up, maybe the staff you spoke with just assumed one over the
other, or (worse yet), the packaging and shipping dept assume one over
the other. The posted date both kits is 10-15-2001 but I'm sure this is
just the date the admin posted the information.

I saved both pics for future reference. If you still can't find them on
the web, let me know and I'll send them to you offline. They are only
25Kb each in .JPG format. Better yet, I'll send them to you offline
anyway.

RE: [Chevelle-List] flowmaster discount

2002-11-20 Thread Dale McIntosh

The
17119 kit shows all the parts at
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/openrd/showthread.php?s=3a1868ed
a89763744ed542d02d49ba76&threadid=319&highlight=17119

The 17120 kit shows all its parts at
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/openrd/showthread.php?s=3a1868ed
a89763744ed542d02d49ba76&threadid=318&highlight=17120 clearly showing
different mufflers.

Let's see...the $30 less expensive kit ($299 vs. $329) has $60 more in
muffler costs ($109x2=$218 vs. $80x2=$160) so the longer (albeit
different) pipes and the stainless steel tips (which may be correct for
68 and up ?) cars costs $88 more in the long run? The $30 difference
would make more sense if both kits had the same mufflers, but again,
according to their website, they don't have the same mufflers. Am I
missing something here or have the parts included in the kits been
changed and the website (plus their .PDF catalog file) does not reflect
what is really included?

[Chevelle-List] 64 Chevelle radio

2002-11-20 Thread gm2

Anyone have a working radio for a 64
Chevelle?  I'd like to get rid of the crap radio that was installed in the
car by a previous owner.  Let me know what you want for
it.

Thanks,

RE: [Chevelle-List] flowmaster discount

2002-11-20 Thread John Nasta
Very interesting. One thing I do know is that the El Camino / Wagon frame
has a 4" longer wheelbase. So, the 17119 would be too short for an El
Camino, and the part that is meant to go over the rear axle wouldn't clear.
The 17120 kit can be made to fit the 2dr Chevelle / Malibu by cutting 4" off
of the H-pipe.

The H-pipes are different because they are different lengths. The tailpipes
are different because one is made to exit the side and the other the rear.
The 11720 tailpipes also come with stainless steel tips already welded on.
Therefore the only thing that the 11719 and 11720 have in common is the 50
series mufflers.

John/All,

I was looking at the Flowmaster site and found a couple of interesting
things. I would have thought that the kits from the engine back to the
over-the-axle pipe would be the same and only the extensions (tail
pipes) would be different. I put the 17119 kit on my 67 SS and had
pipes to either come out behind the rear tire (like factory) or extend
to the rear bumper.

I wondered why the 17119 kit was so much less expensive than the 17120
(Elky/Wagon) kit. It seems that ~almost none~ of the pipes or mufflers
are the same - not even the pipes going back to the rear axle. The
17119 kit comes with 30 series mufflers (52533) while the 17120 kit
comes with 50 series mufflers (52558). The exhaust extension pipes,
H-pipe, over-the-axle, everything is different. Is there that much
difference between coupe/convertible and Elky/wagon frames that the
front half of the exhaust is so different? Guess I just never noticed
before.

My first thought was the different mufflers made the difference in
price. Not so. The 52533 mufflers in the less expensive kit ($299) are
almost $30 more EACH (Summit price $109 for the muffler) than the 52558
mufflers in the more expensive ($329) kit (Summit price of $80 for the
muffler). For $299 you get mufflers costing $218 and for $329 you get
mufflers costing $160. Strange (???).

Bob,
Where do you live? I can imagine shipping on them would be heck! I
more than likely am going to use the heads my friend gave me off a 454

The other ones I was thinking about getting rid of I took off the June

stuck open on them, but I am guessing that won't hurt them permanently?

The arm mounting point are the same. The a-arms on these cars are
interchangeable but the frames are longer in the early models 68-72 two
door coupe 112" wheel base. early models 115" wheel base. Actually the
mount points for the rear axles are the same the axle is just shorter on
the early models.

I have seen many old cars where the owners have used the rear seat belt
mount for a harness mount. You just need a long "Y" harness. You have
to make sure that the belts are at a reasonable angle, and will not fall
off your shoulders or pull you down incorrectly. Ideally, they should
be pulling you back and down into the seat, but our older cars with
short seats can cause problems. If you have a higher back seat, then it
might work just fine.

That said, the C2 corvettes had optional shoulder belts in the 60's, and
the factory mounting point is way back where the frame kicks up by the
rear wheel.

I'm thinking about the long "Y" harness for my Chevelle if I don’t add a
cage, and at some point in the future I'd like to do something similar
to the Corvette, if I can fit decent seats. I'd really like a roll bar
in the Corvette, but can't easily fit one to work with the convertible

It's a G.M. Powertrain plant. They pour and make the Vortec I4 and I5 engine

[Chevelle-List] Difference b/t 64-67 & 68-72

2002-11-20 Thread Michael Ishee
Does any know what all dimensions if any are different between these two
series of frames and suspension mounting points. I know that they have
different frames but is the only difference where the 64-67 mounts to the
rear axle because of the shorter rear axle. Is there any different in the
a-arm mounting points. Thanks for the help.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Child car seats / Car Seat Found - 5 point harness upto 80 lbs

2002-11-20 Thread Krister Meister

Good news for us driving young kids around in our Chevelle's

I found a 5 - point harness car seat called Husky made by Britax that is
forward facing for kids 22 lbs to 80 lbs and to a max height of 53". I
called Britax's customer service and they verified that this seat only uses
a lap belt for the full duration of its use up to 80 lbs or 53". If used
in a shoulder / lap belt application - the shoulder belt and lap belt are
held together with a clip and passed through the seat as a lap belt. These
seats are relatively new to the market and in checking with my local Zany
Brainy and Babies R Us they have not received any yet. However; they can
be ordered online as well.

http://www.britaxusa.com/products.cfm?id=DC0D7127-A6B2-42EB-84321E6A28508BAD

This gets me out of the woods for probably four more years, but reto-
fitting to rear shoulder belts is probably eminent

Thanks Brian for the link original amazon.com which directed me the Britax
brand

We had to address this when we had an '87 Olds 98 and we went through the
Olds dealer and get some universal ones ordered and installed there. They
mounted through the rear deck (behind the seat). And we used a child
booster
car seat in my truck belted in the center seat. It was legal where I live
to
use that. Here is one that may work.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Child car seats

Wondering how those with small kids have addressed this issue. I have a
'66 SS with rear seat lap belts (factory) and I have 4.5 year old twins,
about 33 - 35 lbs, that are growing out of their 5 point harness car seats
which use only the vehicles lap belt. The seat type they need to move up
into all use a shoulder / lap belt design.

Has anyone found a lap belt design child's (40lb - 100lb) car seat or
retrofitted a '66 to rear seat with shoulder / lap belts?

My kids will be bummed if they can't cruise around and I just don't trust a
lap belt if there is something better available for their safety.

Thanks

[Chevelle-List] Shoulder belts

2002-11-20 Thread Craig A. Ellis

I've been reading the posts on shoulder belts with interest. I've got
the roof belts in my '70 but, somewhere along the line during the resto,
the latch belt they connect to disappeared. For that matter, the rest of
my belts look a bit tacky and I've been considering replacing them all.
Does anyone make a high quality kit that contains all these belts? Also,
does my '70 have a collaspible steering wheel? Is it the lattice type or
slip column type?

Thanks,

Craig

Steve,
Spray some weld thru primer on the joints before
welding. This product is mostly zinc, and will flow when welding and solidify
after, preventing rust. You can get the primer from welding supply and other
sources.

  Gents,
     I am about
to start welding in floor pans. I want to use a lap joint, but was warned that
you can get rust developing where the metal overlaps. That's a good
  point.

Another guy recommended some stuff to put in there before you weld but
can't give me the details on what it is and where to find it. I know to watch
out for fumes when weldingso have to be careful.

  What
have others done to prevent rust there? Does anyone know of a product to use
  there?
