InterVLAN routing VLAN Sub-Interfaces [7:16445]

2001-08-18 Thread Hamid

Hi

I was studying the InterVlan routing documents and I got to some questions.
In a scenario like the attached file:

1. How does the external Router decide how to route the packets between the
VLANs, is the INTERVLAN routing based on the IP address assigned to
sub-inteface?

2. In these scenarios, how does the router detect a conflicting IP address?
For example, if each IP subnet is assigned to a VLAN( 10.10.1.0 to VLAN 1
and 10.10.2.0 to VLAN 2), if two computers on both VLANs are assigned the
same IP address (for example 10.10.1.5), how is the confilit detected and
which computer is disabled?

Thanks

Hamid

Some ideas for when this happens.

Get a sniffer trace during time of problem and see
 whats going on.

Record 'show interface' stats on the interface(s)
before the problem occurs and after it occurs compare
and see what the differences are (errors,
 transistions, etc).

What are the Ethernet interface(s) connected to? A
switch, etc? Maybe theres something going on with
 spanning tree every few days.

Re: InterVLAN routing VLAN Sub-Interfaces [7:16445]

2001-08-18 Thread Tony Medeiros

Answer Inline

 Hi

I was studying the InterVlan routing documents and I got to some
questions.
In a scenario like the attached file:

 1. How does the external Router decide how to route the packets between
the
VLANs, is the INTERVLAN routing based on the IP address assigned to
 sub-inteface?

Yes, The router will make a decision on which interface to use based on the
destination IP address of the Packet it is routing. Either by a connected
network or the next hop according to the routing table. If it's a trunk
interface with subinterfaces, same thing applies except the router will
encapulate the packet in the proper frame (ISL or Dot1Q)

 2. In these scenarios, how does the router detect a conflicting IP
address?
For example, if each IP subnet is assigned to a VLAN( 10.10.1.0 to VLAN 1
and 10.10.2.0 to VLAN 2), if two computers on both VLANs are assigned the
same IP address (for example 10.10.1.5), how is the confilit detected and
 which computer is disabled?

The router doesn't disable hosts. If you assign a ip address to an
interface on a router and a host already has it, the router will tell you
with a consol message. It will ARP for the address it you assigned it to
see if there is a duplicate.

Same thing with hosts. Depending on the OS, If you assign an address that
is already in use on the network, you will get an error message like a pop
up in winblows. Host ususal do an ARP for it's address just like a router.
Appletalk works in the same way, sort of. It actual can randomly pick it's
own host address in the cable range and checks to see if its in use, If it
is, it try's another one.

Hope this helps.

Hey there, Tom:

You don't need to do this with BGP (since you're not multi-homed). You can
just use static routes and set the metrics so that when one fails, the other
picks it up.

Worm/Security Alert! [7:16451]

2001-08-18 Thread Michael Grant

Hello everybody.

Not long after I hooked up to the internet with my DSL connection, I
suffered a
security breach due to a persistant internet worm. Here is some info on what
I
found out about it through removing it from my system:

Bymer worm/backdoor program info:

- Infects Shared Folders in Win 9x local area networks.
- Looks for vulnerabilities in internet-connected LANs due
to file sharing and lack of passwords for shared resources.
- Drops a copy of the DNETC.EXE client, a legitimate program
used by the Distributed.net organization, who with internet
user's permission uses it to share all the members of
Distributed.net's computer resources at once; in effect
allowing their members to have access to the world's biggest
  computer.
- Creates WININIT.EXE in the C:\Windows\System directory as a
backdoor to provide remote access control of your computer
by the user of the DNETC.EXE client.

Solution:

- Run virus scan to clean the worm from your system.
- Go to http://www.distributed.net/trojans.html.en and download
their Wormfree utility. Run the program; it will likely find
several files in the C:\Windows\System directory and prompt
you for a decision as to whether you want to delete them. If you
do not want to delete them, then you should move/rename them.
- Disable file sharing on the drives it prompts you to to prevent
further invulnerabilities. If you need to keep file sharing, set
a password for access to your shared drives.
- Run the virus scan again, just to make sure you caught everything.
- Check your computer's registry (regedit.exe) under HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE\
Software\Microsoft\Current Version\Run and check your WIN.INI file to
make sure there are no references to WININIT.EXE. If you find such
references, delete them. Also delete any registry references to
  Distributed Computing or DNETC.EXE

WORMFREE.EXE found the following files in my C:\Windows\System
directory and identified them as being the result of a worm:

DNETC.EXE (Distributed.Net client)
DNETC.INI (Included the address: [EMAIL PROTECTED])
buff-in.rc5 (not certain as to purpose)
buff-in.ogr ( )
WININIT.EXE (Found previously by F-Prot antivirus;
 recognized as a Backdoor program)
WININIT.LOG

Other worms do a similar thing to the Bymer worm. One uses Window's
NOTEPAD.EXE to disguise itself. If you find a file called NOTE.COM
on your hard drive, you've likely got that form of worm. The worm
in that case re-names NOTEPAD.EXE to NOTE.COM, and renames itself
to NOTEPAD.EXE.

Final note: WININIT.EXE if found in the C:\Windows directory is a
legitimate and /necessary/ file, needed for installing new programs.
** DO NOT ** remove this copy of the file, ONLY remove the one in
C:\Windows\System.

Re: InterVLAN routing VLAN Sub-Interfaces [7:16445]

2001-08-18 Thread Peter Van Oene

Keep in mind that one routes between IP subnets, not VLANs. VLANs are a
layer two concept. From there you should be able to answer you own first
question. In the second case, given IP subnets have unique ranges, only on
PC will be on the valid subnet and hence be able to communicate to the rest
of the network. Neither PC will be disabled as far as I know, but only one
will function. Using DHCP is highly recommended to overcome this manual
configuration errors, not to mention it scales better.

VPN to PIX using Win2000 or Millennium?? [7:16452]

2001-08-18 Thread Andy

Hi

Does anyone know if it is possible to set up a VPN using either Windows 2000
or Millennium to connect to a corporate PIX without using any Cisco client
software?

I believe it is possible but haven't had any luck in getting it to work.

I have it working great using NT with the Cisco Secure VPN client, which
unfortunately doesn't run on the newer versions of Windows. I've also been
told this is because the newer versions of Windows don't need it as they
have this capability built in.

I've done the usual setting up the VPN part on Windows but to my mind there
seems to be a lot of options missing that would allow you to get it to work
properly, such as ESP and AHP settings, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Andy

RE: VPN to PIX using Win2000 or Millennium?? [7:16452]

2001-08-18 Thread Rik Guyler

Yes, PIX supports PPTP acording to CCO. However, I became frustrated with
PPTP as each version of Windows offers different options and interacts with
the PIX in a different manner. In other words, I have set this up and made
it work most of the times I tried, but this one time, in band camp

Now, my experience is with the 5.x code and maybe, just maybe, it's better
with the 6.x code as this now seems to be the trendy way to provide remote
access. Despite this, I really recommend purchasing the VPN client. The
100-user license retails for around $250.

BTW - It used to be that the PPTP configs for the PIX on CCO were flawed.
Maybe this is still the same, maybe not.

I think I remember something on this from quite a while back. This is either
a new version of it or this worm is close to a year old. Anyway, file and
print sharing is dissabled by default. Any users that don't know better than

wouldn't be reading this.

Lab scheduling ? [7:16464]

2001-08-18 Thread Glenn Johnson

Does anyone have any idea what the current delay is like for scheduling the
lab (anywhere in the western hemisphere)? I passed the written recently,
but my info is not available online yet (otherwise I would check there). I
imagine that the delay is at least six months, but thought that things might
be different with the changes to the format taking effect in October.

Thanks

I was studying the InterVlan routing documents and I got to some questions.
In a scenario like the attached file:

1. How does the external Router decide how to route the packets between the
VLANs, is the INTERVLAN routing based on the IP address assigned to
sub-inteface?

Yes, that's right.

A router has never been able to detect duplicate IP addresses. It's not its
job. When the first packet comes in to the router from one of the devices
assigned to 10.10.1.5, the router would add the source addresses to its ARP
cache (assuming it's doing ARP gleaning) or the first time it sent to the
IP address it would ARP and get the MAC address from the first response.

If you use DHCP you shouldn't get duplicates anyway. DHCP checks for
duplicates.

Priscilla

2001-08-18 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

IP input being high could be a symptom of Code Red.

I have also seen ip input get really high due to IP fragmentation. Do you
have your mtu set too high? Do other devices communicating through the
router have the mtu set too high?

Have you searched on ip input at Cisco's site?

One simple search on ip input (in quotes, mind you) came up with this
warning about Code Red:

Avoiding IP conflicts in a MULTI-VLAN environment [7:16470]

2001-08-18 Thread Hamid Ali Asgari

Hi group

I am setting up a network with some NT4 servers, a Catalyst 2948 switch ,
and a 7204 VXR router and some access servers. The network consists of 7
VLANs, and all the servers and routers are on multi-VLAN or TRUNK interfaces
on the switch. The LAN consists of many computers with different operating
systems such as UNIX, LINUX and Win2k. Lots of computers that will be
connected to this LAN are laptops so I can't implement PORT SECURITY on the
Catalyst.

The problem is that I want to prevent my clients to make IP Conflicts in my
network. Correct me if I am wrong, but someone had told me that when an IP
conflict occurs , the computer with the greater ARP version wins (or
something like that !), so the RED HAT 7.1 LINUX operating systems would
take down my NT servers.

Any ideas or soloutions how I could prevent these conflicts?

Thanks in advance

Hamid

Re: Avoiding IP conflicts in a MULTI-VLAN environment [7:16470]

2001-08-18 Thread Kevin Wigle

It depends on the kind of environment you have and how much control you
have - that is to say, do people who break the rules get in trouble or just
get their hands slapped? (or nothing)

Anyway, DHCP will definitely fix this problem but only if users don't change
the IP configuration on their PCs from DHCP to static.

I once worked in an environment that consisted of 10 floors of engineers.
We got IP conflicts all the time because people didn't want to go through
the process of asking for an address - especially if they thought they
needed it only for a little while to test something out. At the time we
were using static addressing which was handed out by a bootp server

Once we installed switches and HP Openview and implemented DHCP, we could
track down the offenders fairly quickly and then yank their connection (or
shut the port) and wait for the phone to ring. After awhile, the
engineers finally figured out that we could catch them and things cooled
down. Also, because the DHCP pools had enough addresses to handle temporary
requirements.

I haven't heard about the issue about greater ARP version. Usually whoever
has the address first wins and the second PC to attempt the address loses.
Usually an error is reported back on the second PC with the MAC address of
the PC that has the address already - which can be traced.

Good user policies that are enforced and DHCP should prevent IP conflict
problems.

You seem to be quite an authority on Jeff and his work habits. There
are many reasons for taking on a coauthor, and they often have to do
with producing better quality, not could not finish by himself.

You also don't know his responsibilities at Juniper and how he split
his time among the books. Or have I missed the many books you have
written to make you an authority on the subject of authors' time
management and personal motivation?

Most reviewers write their reviews after the book has been out; some
even read them. In this case, were I Jeff, I would be tempted to
quote Max Reger: I am sitting in the smallest room in the house. I
have your review in front of me.
Soon it will be behind me.

I feel better. Jeff is a respected colleague and doesn't deserve
cheap shots. The smiley doesn't help.

I hope it will be something on JNCIE, not JNCIS.
Seems Jeff Doyle could not finish his second volume of Routing TCP/IP by
himself,
now we know he spent too much time on his Juniper book, based on the price
of Juniper box, this book must be more expensive than cisco books :-).

Re: please tell me what is ip input process?it cost me more [7:16482]

2001-08-18 Thread Ron Tan

This was how I tackled it:

1) Create an access-list that blocks traffic from coming into tcp port 80

ip access-list extended deny-port-80
deny tcp any any eq 80
   permit ip any any

2) Apply the access-list onto all your router's interfaces for incoming
traffic

ip access-group deny-port-80 in

3) After you've done all that and looking forward to finding out the
infected host, on each interfaces, disable the above access-list and enable
ip route-cache flow and then get out of config mode and perform a show ip
cache flow you will be able to see certain traffic that are from a single
source to multiple different destination on port 80 (reflected as 0050 under
destination port).

4) Get out there and patch the infected host !

Good luck.

Re: Cisco Secure ACS for NT/2000 [7:16318]

2001-08-18 Thread Chris Clark

Depends on what you are using it for. It can do a lot of different things.
The main gotcha is that it can not handle password changes very well.

Does anyone have any experience good or bad with Cisco Secure Access
Control
for Windows NT/2000? Are there any gottchas that I need to be aware of? I
am
trying to get approval to purchase this product but managment wants me to
get opinions from someone else besides Cisco.

 Thanks,

Re: Jeff Doyle Juniper book out soon!! [7:491]

2001-08-18 Thread Kent Yu

Howard,

I think you misunderstood and overreacted.

I definitely respect Jeff Dolye and his co-auther a lot!!

I did not even try to do those things you mentiond in your email.

If it is not joke to you, it must be my bad.

I hope you are not implying Jeff Doyle is not a better writter than his
co-auther on some topics.

No intention to talk about this any more.

 Kent,

Seems Jeff Doyle could not finish his second volume of Routing TCP/IP by
 himself,
now we know he spent too much time on his Juniper book, based on the
price
of Juniper box, this book must be more expensive than cisco books :-).

I have it on very good authority that Jeff Doyle will
shortly be releasing a Juniper book. It's content I am
not sure of but I am assuming it will be good study
   material for JNCIS!!

   regards,
