Hello,
Just installed cooker. Raid is ok, all is almost ok now. Just a curious
thing: when I choose to disable supermount during install process ("setup
filesystem" step) it says "DIED". But now, fstab is correct and everything is
ok: SUPERMOUNT HAS GONE!!! YEAHHH!!!;o))

Ehmm... by the way, that's what I can read in ddebug.log (few lines...)

[Cooker] Re: Bug with smb/remote printer in beta 3

Corrected Realtek number above.

I cannot configure the X-Server. The Matsonic 8308 is based on an SiS
chipset with an SiS 630 video chip and "SiS 630 GUI Accelerator plus
3D". When I get to that section of the install I only get the choice to
install XFree86 3.3.6 (?) or 3.3.6 with experimental 3D support, but not
XFree86 4.0.3.

(This may be appropriate -- there is some confusion on the XFree site,
it may be that the driver for 4.0.2 supported the SiS 630 but the driver
for 4.0.3 does not. That seems strange, but may be the case -- I've
written to them about that. This is not the main problem, but if you
are interested, see these two web pages:

http://xfree86.org/4.0.2/Status30.html#30
http://xfree86.org/4.0.3/SiS1.html#1
)

The main problem is that, whichever option I choose (3.3.6 or 3.3.6 with
experimental...) I quickly get to an error message that says:

An error occurred
Can't call method "set_active" on an undefined value

This also happened when I tried to install Mandrake 7.2 on this system.

Is there a solution? I was expecting that in either case (Mandrake 7.2
or Mandrake 8.0 beta) I would be given an option to use the "plain"
VGA/SVGA driver, but saw no way to choose that.

Thanks,
Randy Kramer

[Cooker] Harddrake, cdrw, (e)ide/atapi.

2001-04-10 Thread Blue Lizard

Installed a yamaha lightspeed (eide). cdrecord say where your scsi?
Blue say huh? Blue try to figure out the whole scsi emulation thing.
Much trouble to find a simple solution. Read linux gazette articles
from September 2000. There was nothing to configure in harddrake, I
don't think it detected that this was a burner and needed to be scsied
or whatever.
Could we patch in a tiny little (I guess one click thing) that would set
this up for neophytes?
Here is what I did (hdd is the burner):
Changed /etc/lilo.conf as follows:

image=
  label=--
  root=---
  initrd=--
  append="hdd=ide-scsi"
  read-only

Changed rc.local as follows:

At very end added 'modprobe ide-scsi'

---

Simple as anything but since mandrake is the newbie friendly distro I
figured it might be good to add in. Doesn't really seem like a feature
or I wouldn't have mentioned in this cycle. Just a patch to me but I no
programmer to do it.

[Cooker] Beta3 Installation Report - Two major bugs

2001-04-10 Thread Michael Brown

Only two actual bugs found:

1)
When selecting partition sizes (expert mode),
the numbers typed in to the "size" edit box can be ignored. Rather odd,
but this is what happens:

If you type a number into the box, it is ignored (the partition will be
created with whatever size the dialog defaulted to).

If you type a number into the box, then switch to another control, the
slider does not move. This is consistent with the number being
ignored. Clicking on the slider left/right buttons moves the slider from
its current position and reset the number in the box.

If you click on the up/down buttons next to the edit box, then the number
changes correctly *and* the slider moves.

Hope someone can fix this - it's a very annoying problem but probably
caused by a tiny typo somewhere in the depths of the installer!

2)
On reboot after installation, system failed to start. Probably an initrd
problem. Setup is /dev/hde1 is /boot (ext2), /dev/hde5 is / (reiser).
Messages are:

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
[] initrd_helper v1.0.1
[] Loading module /lib/reiserfs.o
kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-33, errno = 2
VFS: Cannot open root device "2105" or 21:05

Well, no more testing for me until someone can fix this problem :-(

Other comments:

Captions on the photos would be nice.

A bit more status information (other than just time remaining) would also
be nice. Even if it's just the name of the package currently being
installed.

Is there a way to set up RAID while in the installer? Tried using the
console on Alt-F2 - couldn't modprobe md, which I presume is essential to
setting up RAID devices (never done it before, was aiming to try with this
installation). Error message was "unresolved symbol md_autodetect_dev".
Don't have any other machines running kernel 2.4, so was unable to do much
experimentation - gave up and installed without RAID.

Using remote display for installation (linux display=10.0.0.1:1), fonts
were very small and no cursor was visible at any time.

Due to the macrovision on/off code in that library, it will probably never
be open sourced.

claiming. I have documented display problems with the XFree86 driver, yet if
I copy over the mga_drv.o from Matrox's site, the display is correct. So
far, the problems have been limited to anti-aliased font display, but it's
pretty darn obvious (screen shots available).

The XFree86 driver has gotten better, and at least it's now usable without
anti-aliased fonts, but with AA turned on, your only option is to download
and use the binary driver from Matrox. :-(

I guess the source code used to build the apache binaries
is being distributed so that you can build modules and such
from the exact same source base.

[Cooker] Large memory support

I can not compile a 2.4.3 kernel to support high memory.
I have tried all different configurations but the modules will never load on

2.4.2 is ok I compiled from beta 3 again today and it is ok if I don't load
the mdk config file first.

Can someone please compile a high mem kernel and maybe put it in unsupported

update.
I can do a install if I use the network.img-2.2.17-BOOT8 to do the install
it installs to the raid drive just fine and boots to the 2.4.3 kernel ok.
hope that helps. I do get a gl1280 module that can't load during the install

[Cooker] Bug with smb/remote printer in beta 3

2001-04-10 Thread Randy Kramer

I just tried to install 8.0 beta 3 for the first time.

(System is a Matsonic 8308 with on-board video, sound, ethernet, 700
MHz Duron, 192 MB Ram. On board ethernet is disabled to use a 10 mbit
Coax ethernet (Realtek 1029(??), I forget the number right now, but the
installation autodetected it and seemed to configure the network
properly.)

1. I configured a local printer which worked fine (almost -- I'll come
back to this), then I went to configure a remote printer using the SMB/
option. At this point the installation hung. Based on the message at
the bottom of the screen, the system might have been looking for the
printer. The computer with that printer was on, that printer was on,
and the network was and is working. (The machine I am installing on is
a dual boot with Windows -- networking and sharing of the printer is
working fine in windows.) (I don't know whether the system really tries
to look for the remote printer or not.)

2. The configuration of the local printer went fine on the second
install attempt. (The installation hung at the SMB printer install on
both attempts.) On the first attempt to install the local printer, I
tried a printer driver that turned out to be the wrong printer driver,
and it dumped a ton of garbage to the printer that printed multiple
pages (of garbage). Is there a way to kill a bad print job like that
within the installation, or must I shut off the printer and computer,
reboot, and restart the installation?

3. Also, after selecting packages, it told me I was about to install 3
servers, (cups, postfix, and webmim, IIRC) and asked me if I really
wanted to. I answered no because I did not want postfix installed, but
there was no additional choice after that -- presumably it didn't
install any of the three. (I don't know the final result, because the
installation failed at the printer install -- when I started a reinstall
I said yes at that point.)

Don't have any more comments at this point -- in the midst of the third
installation attempt -- this time I will not attempt to install the
remote printer.

You can't just arbitrarily tell someone that the browser you ship has
security problems and we're too lazy to update so go use another
browser. Advocate the other browsers all you want, but some people
will still want to use Netscape, and for those people they must use
4.77 or disable java/javascript (which should be shot anyways, but
that's not the point).

4.77 needs to be in 8.0 period... from a security standpoint. Either
it needs to be 4.77 (which it is), or it needs to be removed which it
isn't). You can't just *not* update it because it's an inferior
browser, especially when you have a security problem to deal with.

I've recompiled with ACPI and the above patch. With ACPI without patch the
problem remains the same. With patch it looks much better - system does
not turns on when I just touch the mouse. Still, if I move mouse long

[Cooker] APM vs ACPI

2001-04-10 Thread Andrej Borsenkow

If both ACPI and APM are compiled in kernel, normally APM is used unless
disabled. So, we can distribute Mandrake kernel with both and let people
use ACPI by simply adding apm=off.

Comments? (I just found that ACPI finally intializes correctly on my
system so I would be very interested to play with it)

Ok. But this raises one more question:
Why are the asm/linux-Includes both provided in kernel-headers AND

Couldn't the "few" different files be generated on demand, especially
the
module versions, which do not work for SMP kernels anyway without
reconfiguring

The only difference of Matrox binary from XFree86 was this HAL (Hardware

XFree86 (KDE ?) can't find *right* font on your system.
I have seen the same LED font on my LM 7.2 when installed LM with Russian
locales. Well, fix was to add Arial/Times New Roman from Win98.
(so, problem was with encoding)
And then select *right* fonts in KDE Control Center.

Also check what encoding you have in Control Center.
If you switched to Unicode (iso10646-1) - it can be a problem in your case as
well.

[Cooker] kernel-headers: why do they install in /usr/include?

2001-04-10 Thread Jürgen Zimmermann

Hello,
I wonder why the kernel-headers for 2.4 kernels do install in
/usr/include?
Isn't it sufficient to install them in /usr/src/linux-2.4.*/include
and set appropriate symlinks from
/usr/include/asm -> /usr/src/linux/include/asm
/usr/include/linux -> /usr/src/linux/include/linux

The "problem" I had was: I had a driver for a controler which was only

But before I set the symlinks, I always got the headers of 2.4 for the
compilation process, at least if I didn't want to modify the

May be, it is not related to this topic, but:

in LM 7.2, by default it installs Russian as KOI8-R, and I have found no way

change in your /etc/conf.modulest the

by

or put that in your ~/.rpmmacros :

%_make_bin make
%make if [ -z "$NPROCS" -a -f /proc/stat ]; then NPROCS=`egrep -c ^cpu[0-9]+
/proc/stat || :`; fi \
if [ -z "$NPROCS" -o "$NPROCS" -le "0" ]; then \
  NPROCS=1 \
fi \
%{_make_bin} -j$NPROCS

FYI: last upstream rpm include it by default.

[Cooker] Pcmcia eth0 with rc1

2001-04-10 Thread Eleknader

Hi!

My network adapter (3com 757 c, pcmcia card) is not properly configured
after install.
I have Dell Cpx 450 laptop.

Installation finds it OK, and asks for IP. After setting IP, pressing OK ->
install
asks IP for 3 Com 59x, which I don't even have. If I click cancel, network
will not
be configured at all. If I press OK, system will set 3 Com 59x as eth1, but
not any
for eth0.

At boot, pcmcia is not working (says no drivers at /proc).

Eleknader.

My estimation that Mozilla 1.0 (real *working* 1.0, if 1.0 can work at all :-)
will be ready in September-October 2001.
Let's say, for LM 8.1 :-))

But I am against updating to NN 4.77, there is a Konqueror, Mozilla 0.8
snapshot, Galeon + Nautilus.
If somebody is interested in security fixes, he should try on of those.

If your goal is rendering speed and low startup time, go for Konqueror.

Hi Randy!
As far as I know, these RPMs should work.
I have tested them (here, on my LM 7.2)
Please be sure when upgrading that you have satisfied list of dependencies.

The only ones I recommend to ignore are db1, db1-devel.
Install all other necessary libs, and KDE 2.1.x should work ok after all.

Yes, you /could/ find it out from the assembler code provided
that you know the exact kernel used.
But it is usually far easier to just look at the clear text
message right before that. Does it by any chance say something
like 'Unable to mount root device on XX:xx' or 'Unable to
open initial console'?

Geoffrey, here?

Merely my suggestion:

1) mark /usr/share/timidity/timidity.cfg with %%config, but a
*REPLACEABLE* one, OR
2) make timidity++ require timidity-instruments

Personally I'd suggest (1), because (2) will make the whole distribution
more bloated but that's up to you anyway :)

Abel Cheung

PS I've been using a modular configuration in timidity and it works
nicely, any plan to make the GUI in timidity modular? So that one needn't
hardcode timidity++ to use GTK interface!
