[Cooker] 9.0 Beta1 comments.
Actually very nice. Have installed on a ThinkPad a22p and on my dual PIV system. Both installs went cleanly. This release is looking good. My only complaints lie in some long standing quirks: 1. I have a Matrox G450 with a ViewSonic PS790. With KDE ( haven't tried GNOME ) the fonts on the titlebars/menus/desktop are really big and bold.) In the past I've tweaked the display geometry to match what X showed on my old system ). I can tweak KDE so the fonts aren't so out of sync with the rest of the display ( which the fonts are fine, xterms are fine, mozilla is fine, as well as emacs ) 2. Printer selection. If you have a CUPS server running it would be nice if that was shown immediately as a default printer. ( You don't really see it until after you exit out of the other printer choices) -randy

[Cooker] install problems
I have several install nitpicks for 9.0beta1. I'm sorry if these have already been reported; they are not in bugzilla. 1. The network.img reports that it's for 8.2 and exits abnormally after you tell it the IP addresses or tell it to use DHCP. Using 3c59x. 2. When booting off the CD, and it asks to press ENTER or F1, pressing F1 does not clear the graphics off the screen. It looks somewhat ugly, and you can't see what you type in. 3. When booting the installed system, it shows this before the "press I to enter interactive mode": kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter errno #2 I have an Advansys SCSI adapter in that machine. Haven't checked if it works. 4. Also, I think the user should be able to choose between quiet and regular startup. It is hard to troubleshoot errors and track down booting slowdowns when they don't show up! Otherwise, the beta looks good. Great job, Mandrake! -- -- Igor

[Cooker] 8.2 kernel-sources kernel cannot read multisession CD's?
This is curious; I had to recompile the 8.2 linux-2.4.18-6mdk kernel to install the linux-wlan pcmcia kit and I must have neglected to include something because I can no longer read only some parts of CDs -- I've never seen anything like this before: I can read all of the directories on the Mandrake distribution CDs _except_ the /Mandrake directories; on all three disks, this only gives the error ls: /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake: Invalid argument but I can read all other directories! Is this a multisession thing? The default config for the kernel sets iso9660 as included in the kernel (instead of as a module like the distro binary kernel) -- the only other status message is the line ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A repeated several times in the syslog. What could I be missing? Latest Cooker Mozilla Spellchecker (-9) can be installed with no other dependency requirements. However, it relies on the Myspell dictionaries for spellchecking. The dict needs to be built into the mozilla spellchecker RPM IMHO, otherwise another dict RPM needs to be added to the standalone Mozilla RPM packages for all to work well. Cheers, Jason

I wouldn't mind putting some work into this (in between school of course : ) I don't quite understand whats involved in proposing "a 'proper' rescue disk"... I think at the moment I will delve into what else I can see of the mandrake rescue system, and experiment with mindi and other documentation I have been able to find. Specifically, in making a hardware independant "rescue" disk, I want to know how Mandrake's rescue disc detects and initializes hardware. In this I am not talking about the "drvinst" command, I have figured that one out. I'm talking about before the system completes its boot cycle, when a text based "status bar" is shown installing... say SCSI drivers. > Are you man enough for the job? [Cooker] mdk9.0 network change/suggestion
When configureing laptops, typically we have 2 cards in the laptop. One is a wired 10/100 connectio, and the other is a wireless card. When a user is in thier office they use the wired card, wireless access points are not available in offices/labs. But when they walk to an conference room, or "special area's" on campus they'd like to have the wireless card "just work". Basically from the users perspective they should not care what interface is working. Both cards should be pluged in at all times, and internet/lan access should just work. Also, if the wired card is plugged in, the default should be to use the wired connection and ignore the wireless card. As soon as they unplug their wired connection the wireless card should take over and everything should "fall back" without any intervention from the user. This is possible with a some simple changes to the ifup script. And will work even better with some options turned on in the kernel. In the ifup script "ip route add default via ${GATEWAY}" and "ip route add default dev ${REALDEVICE}" need to be changed to: "ip route add default via ${GATEWAY} equalize" and "ip route add default dev ${REALDEVICE} equalize". Basically we need the default rout to be able to switch. This is the change needed for static address. (it gets messy for dynamic) Note, the primary interface (the wired card or eth0) can be set to equalize and the other interface can be a regular (no equalize). This is how we currently set up the laptops. since eth0 (wired) is the "first default route" it will get all the traffic, but when it's link goes down the wireless card will take over. Since the wireless card is not equalized (it's dynamic and dhcp does not pass the equalize statement) it will remain default once it switched over. So we tell users when they get to thier office to remove the wireless pcmcia card can reinsert after they pluyg thier laptops back in. (this is the same behavior that windows 2000 has, once the secondary interface takes over it won't go back till reboot - or removing and reinserting the card - so this isn't a "big deal"). There is also some stuff in sysctl.conf that needs to be set. net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter = 0 net.ipv4.route.gc_timeout = 10 the gc_timeout will insure that when the fallback does happen the route cache does not try to timeout all over again with the route that is down. If you guys know how to hook into a dhcp client to pass equalize to the default route then having a laptop (or desktop) with mutiple default routes will failover very nicely! :) Currently I manually modify /ets/sysctl.conf and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup myself... but I think it's a great feature to add to mandrake 9.0 as default -- Bryan Whitehead SysAdmin - JPL - Interferometry Systems and Technology Phone: 818 354 2903 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Cooker] Irq for eth0 ?
Hello, I think I've got some IRQ issues with 3com 3c509TP ISA ethernet card on Mandrake 9.0 beta. I have installed linux as dual boot. I've got Nortel 1Meg DSL modem hooked up to my ethernet card. On PC my ethernet card is recognized and works very well at IRQ 9, I/O: 0x#300 . However, it is not recognized at Linux: 1.) HardDrake (a h/w probing tool at Mandrake) can not detect my ethernet device!? 2.) Device drivers are installed properly, eth0 is there when I do "ifconfig", I can ping it, shows up as up and running. Tx packets are incrementing when I do "adsl-connect", but Rx never increases... I see "Timeout on PADO packets" log after a while. It might be my ISP not responding to my connect request at all, but I could not see any activity on my DSL modem's LEDs when I start the "adsl-connect". So, I am more suspicious about an internal problem, probably an IRQ conflict? I think my ISA ethernet device is set as IRQ 9, and another PCI device is overwriting this setup. I have checked /proc/interrupts, IRQ 9 never increments, but other IRQ's are incerementing every once in a while. What's going on here? So maybe their post should check for existence of mozilla-spellchecker (or /usr/lib/mozilla/components/myspell), and if so put links in. Apparently lang and location get picked up if they are for example en-GB.dic instead of en_GB.dic. If they didn't do this, we could just link /usr/lib/mozilla/components/myspell to /usr/lib/myspell (although that might still be the best option). And maybe the myspell- packages need to have a virtual provides for "myspell-dict" or something (like the other dicts), and anything requiring a dict can require that, so the user gets a choice. But I see no point in repackaging the myspell dicts for mozilla. While we're talking about dictionaries, Gwenole, can the ooffice wrapper link all dictionaries installed into the users dictionaries? Some people may use multi-lingual documents, and there is nothing wrong with a user having more dicts in his .openoffice than he uses, there is a ui for choosing them anyway. The main problem is Qt widgets are large (this is a good thing) and when using KDE/Qt apps at a low resolution, it just doesn't work. GTK+ widgets are tiny (ala Windows), so they're incredibly hard to use at higher resolutions. So yes, generally the logic you point to doesn't make sense, I'll stand behind you on that. In this case however, the logic given for this change doesn't make sense. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Health - Feel better, live better http://health.yahoo.com

It very likely won't work; my USB floppy gets created as /dev/sda and no-one seems to look for this (to make SuSE install I had to switch to a virtual console and symlink /dev/sda to /dev/fd0)...guess this is something else that could be looked at, if Mandrake expects to find fd0 :). Um, I could do this, but first can you confirm I can get to this stage in an install without breaking anything on a working system? Don't want to mess up my working SuSE install. This problem occurred with MDK 8.2, by the way - I haven't tried with Cooker, i'd rather keep release-version distros on the laptop. Oh, I forgot to mention - MDK 8.2 errata has something a bit similar, but it seems to be just a problem with i586 processors (the laptop is a Pentium II, which is i686) and I can't try the fix anyway because to use it you need to use, um, the floppy drive =) -- adamw
[Cooker] wine optimization & new version
For newest wine and new gcc I can compile a working wine with -O3 again, not completely sure if the same goes for cooker wine, but I think so. It is probably to late for 9.0, but I build a srpms for wine 20020710. I can run must installed programs fine with it, but there seem to be some problems installing programs. Not all old patches applied clean, and I updated most of them or removed them if the code in question was completely differnt. Anyway, should I upload it or not? If not could maintainer try rebuilding current version with O3 again? Danny -- Funny how people start a long pointless discussion on this list about sigs instead of mailing me directly.

I noticed that when choosing int. keyboards it is no longer impossible (or i did not find out how) to type " or ~ or ', etc. Formally these signs would appear when you pressed the key twice, or the subsequent key was not an extended one, but now it seems completely impossible. But again, I don't access floppy things > during the setup of the network! :-). Yes, I think the floppy drive could be a red herring. The only reason I mention it is that it's the ONLY common feature between the two machines i've had it crash on. I don't have an easy way to test with a standard floppy drive, sorry :( > We don't have a Sony USB floppy but a seamingly Teac FD-05PUB USB > floppy, with network.img there is no noticeable difference, with > usb.img the program sees it with no problem.. but I didn't > unconnect the regular floppy of my test machine. Please confirm > whether you have one or not. No regular floppy drive, I don't see them as necessary any more and don't like to clutter up my systems with them :). If you're wondering why in that case i'm installing from floppy in the first case, for two reasons: At the time I installed Cooker on my desktop I didn't have any 700MB CDs to write iso's to, so I did a floppy install instead. Trying to do an FTP install (though I tried with HTTP and also tried NFS even though I have no NFS source just to test if they all produced the crash - they all did) got this error; a hard disk install after downloading Cooker to a Windows partition worked OK. With my laptop, I can't get Mandrake to install with Sony's PCMCIA CD drive; it will boot off it just fine but won't see it after that, so when it gets to package selection it can't read the CD and says 'no hdlists found!' (Yes, i've tried the boot parameters listed in various places to get the CD drive recognised, but they don't seem to work. Hmm - actually, I guess maybe switching to a virtual console and modprobing the relevant PCMCIA stuff would help, but I didn't think of this at the time. May investigate further, but it'd be nice if DrakX did PCMCIA install media automagically.) Trying all the various forms of network installation gives the crash. A hard disk installation from the floppy would be harder since I don't have a Windows partition big enough to contain Mandrake, so I gave up and installed SuSE instead =). Oh, yes, to be noted - though I mentioned it before - this also happens with 8.2's disks. Can the other person having the problem test with those as well, to confirm? -- adamw
