Bug#308755: Build-Depends on dropped perl-transitional package

2005-05-12 Thread Jeroen van Wolffelaar
Package: webmagick
Version: 2.02-7
Severity: serious

This package depends on one of the old potato perl packages, that now
don't exist anymore because the potato->woody transitional package has
been dropped.

Please update the build dependency.

Also, you depend on 'gs', which is also a transitional package.

I think you could obtain the same behavior just using pon and
poff commands, without resorting to external shell scripts.

For example

A fix is being worked on for this, though I am not sure
if/when it will be able to go into Sarge as the kernels

Please specify whether your package provides a client, a server, or
both. If it's only a client, or only a server, you should probably
rename the package accordingly (see the DHCPv4-related packages).

It wouldn't hurt to mention that the stateless server is the Debian
package 'radvd' and doesn't require specific client software other than
iproute or whatever.

Is the Relay Agent provided by this package as well, or by a separate
Debian package, or does Debian not have one at all?

fixed in 4.0 as well.

Hi Stephen

We happen to see many unzip Input/Output Error on our Server.

Chatting with the clamav developers they found a problem with the unzip
routines.

http://www.tigertech.net/eicardeflate64.zip contains the eicar test string but
does not get recognized by clamd.

Description of the Problem:

Hmm, 0.85 still can't detect it, but does not fail with that I/O-Error.

Bug#305343: Patch

2005-05-12 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi!

Please do not use the previous patch, since it is incomplete.

The Ubuntu patch

 http://patches.ubuntu.com/patches/xine-lib.CAN-2005-1195.patch

also fixes an overflow in the MMS stream decoder.

This is CAN-2005-1195, please mention that in the changelog.

Thanks,

Martin

Bug#308764: README.Debian suggests insecure install

2005-05-12 Thread Olivier Sessink
Package: moinmoin-common
Version: 1.3.4-3

In /usr/share/doc/moinmoin-common/README.Debian it is explained how to
set up a wiki. It is suggested to put the data in /var/www/mywiki

However, the MoinMoin site itself tells people *never* to put the data
directory within the webroot!

I think the documentation should be changed.

Olivier Sessink

Bug#279489: wmaker: restarts on window resize

2005-05-12 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Marcelo,

I've prepared a 0-day NMU for this bug, based on Timo's patch. The full
diff is attached.

I made an abortive attempt to use "variable" as the fallback instead of
"fixed", since that seemed more in line with the use of helvetica; but it
turns out that the "variable" font alias in xfonts-base *points* to
helvetica, which is not part of xfonts-base and therefore cannot be relied
on.

The NMU will be uploaded shortly.

-release: please approve wmaker_0.91.0-7.1 for sarge, fixing this RC bug.

Cheers,

Bug#308766: jabber-irc: Depends: python2.3, but invokes /usr/bin/python

2005-05-12 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: jabber-irc
Version: 0.1cvs20050311-1
Severity: serious

Hi Alexey,

I was preparing to sponsor your upload of jabber-irc 0.1cvs20050420-1 to fix
RC bug #307734, but in the process, lintian spit out this error:

 E: jabber-irc: python-script-but-no-python-dep ./usr/sbin/jabberd-irc

This is a missing dependency, and therefore an RC policy violation (and a
violation of the python policy in particular). Please fix this bug.

In the meantime, since bug #307734 has now been open for a week, jabber-irc
will be removed from testing.

Bug#307767: drupal: Please include extractor.php

2005-05-12 Thread Daniel Bonniot
Finding the script would have been easier for me if you had pointed me
to the contrib CVS. ;-)
Oops, sorry for forgetting this.
Do you think that including actual po files from the CVS might make
sense? BTW, since you appear to be somwhat of an active user, could
you help me with packaging 4.6.0?
I'm not completely familiar with the way drupal handles translations yet. If I
understand correctly, the user would still need to manually import the po
files for the languages they want, right? Are the translations stored in the
database after import? I suppose it also matters how big the po files are.

Regarding packaging, I cannot say I have loads of free time at the moment, but
if you need help badly I can try to. Concretely, how do you propose to
collaborate? I can surely beta-test the packages, since I have test
installation of my site.

Bug#308765: installing udev (and hotplug as a dependency) garbles audio modules

2005-05-12 Thread giuseppe bonacci
Package: hotplug
Version: 0.0.20040329-22
Severity: normal

Hi.
After installing udev and hotplug (as a dependency), my soundcard
doesn't work anymore.
I have no discover* package installed, and the list of modules to be
loaded at boot is statically kept in /etc/modules.

I attach all the relevant files before and after running the command
'aptitude install udev' and rebooting, all the rest being the same. (In
particular, no initrd was rebuilt, so the modules loaded from the initrd
are the same)

As you can see, hotplug forces loading of the i810_audio module, that is
not needed and silently collides with snd-intel8x0, and renders my
soundcard unusable.

If you think I should provide further data, feel free to ask me.
Best regards.

giuseppe

I just recently used inkscape an my ibook for some artwork and didn't see
a single crash. I do also not remember any crashes at startup on my
previously used Pismo.

Bug#308768: 'apropos "^tea"' lists 'tea' AND 'teaed'

2005-05-12 Thread A Costa
Package: tea
Version: 9.0-1
Severity: normal

By request, ("We aim to please!"), a spin-off from
bug #303352...

It's the curse of 'dak'. The man page still thinks 'teaed' is called 'tea'.

 % apropos "^tea" | grep text
tea (1) - small text editor for gnome2
teaed (1)- small text editor for gnome2

Any 'tea' page?

 % man tea | wc
 No manual entry for tea
0 0 0

Howbout 'teaed'?

 % man teaed | wc
 33 1261214

And how does it start?

 man teaed | head | nl | sed '/^ *$/d'
 1 TEA(1)
 TEA(1)
 2 NAME
3 tea - small text editor for gnome2
 4 SYNOPSIS
 5 tea files

...which is why 'apropos' still lists 'tea'. It's a pity too,
"tea" was a much nicer name than "teaed". Maybe a separator
or some capitals would improve its look: "tea.ed",
"tea-ed", "teaED", "teaEd", "teaE", "tea-argh"...

(If only 'dak' would change its 'tea' to 'tea-dak' instead.)

Hope this helps...

I agree with the bug reporter, then. A package of the importance of shadow
should desserve a test suite which would prevent the package building when
something's going wrong. Even if it's called "unstable", the day I won't be
able to log onto my machine for one whole day, I'll get *mad*.

I'm not sure that build-depending'ing on ltp is a good idea, but the goal is
noble. I would not close the bug report.

I have mangled this fix so it applies to 2.4.27 and committed it to SVN.

Bug#308771: partitioner does not release swap when restarted

2005-05-12 Thread Eduard Bloch
Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

When the paritioner has activated the swap once, and is restarted later
(because of some other problems, for example), it continues though one
of the partitions is currently busy.

It must release swap before writting changes on the partition table.
Otherwise, it fails to reread it.
In my case I did not change the partition locations so the error would
not be critical at all, but the installer does NOT tell you what
happened and a normal user would have no clue how to procceed.

Eduard.

Bug#253913: Solution

2005-05-12 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi!

After debugging this with James Troup, we finally found the cause of
this: The error

XX000: failed to initialize lc_messages to ""
LOCATION: InitializeGUCOptions, guc.c:1866

happens if there is an attempt to start the postmaster under a locale
that doesn't exist any more. I will add a check to the next version
that verifies that the locale is still available before running
postmaster.

To the original submitter: it seems that during your woody->sarge
upgrade the locale got lost, but the environment still
configured I will also add this check to the initdb call.

Thanks,

No, it will be needed for sarge and is waiting to go into testing.
Note that the version in stable (woody) is 3.64-3, which was a real

The actual suggestion was to incorporate some regression testing into
this package: such a bug has occurred once and would be easy to check
for to prevent it from ever occurring again. Hence the purpose of the
now-defunct debian-test package.

Bug#308774: tries to umount not mounted system filesystems and throws an error

2005-05-12 Thread Eduard Bloch

Severity: important

Hello,

trying to install using d-i from 28.04, I got this error after 100%
installation of the base system:

The debootstrap program exited with an error (return value 1).
Check /var/log/messages or see virtual console 3 for the details.

Fine. This file tells me:

Setting up base-config (2.53.7) ...

umount: /target/dev/pts: Invalid argument
umount: /target/dev/shm: Invalid argument
umount: /target/proc/bus: No such file or directory

Doesn't make much sense on the first glance. On the second look, you
will notice that this are filesystems inside of procfs or devfs. I think
it tries to umount them twice somewhere, though I don't know what caused
that error. I know that I have installed this system successfully unter
slightly different conditions before. The only major difference is usage
or ReiserFS instead of Ext3 now.

Yes, it seems to have been similar. Made a little script that reinstalled
each dependency, then tried to launch inkscape. After a while of running in
the background, inkscape popped up, and the output was:

Setting up libgtkmm-2.4-1 (2.4.11-1) ...

I'm still not sure what the problem was, but I guess it's been fixed now,

Bug#308775: emacs21-el: fix symlink handling in customize mode

2005-05-12 Thread Michael Wardle
Package: emacs21-el
Version: 21.4a-1
Severity: normal

If you select "Save for Future Settings" in the customize mode
(e.g. M-x describe-variable; indent-tabs-mode; /cust/; RET)
and the Emacs custom-file is a symbolic link, the symbolic link is
overwritten with a new file.

Reportedly there is an upstream fix for this, but this is worthwhile
fixing on Debian until Emacs 22 comes out.

The definition of custom-file() in /usr/share/emacs/21.4/lisp/cus-edit.el
should be changed to pass the result via file-chase-links() so it reads:
(defun custom-file ()

The fact that it makes sense is to be diiscussed. I have already
explained zillion of times that the critical priority is meant to
minimize questions to the very absolute minimum, so there is a
rationale to have the confirmation at high only.

This is why I wrote that I'd like to get more advice before doing this
change. I already got several in -boot, but this is not onlt a matter
for -boot.

I wanted to wait a bit before bringing this topic somewhere else,
including the Technical Commitee.

So, please don't commit the fix now. We have plenty of time to fix
that anyway.

From the log I see that you started you with language de and country DE,
later in the installation you switched the language to English, which
automatically sets the country to US, but without running countrychooser
again.

I think, as network-console was also used, possibly bug #281530 could also
be a factor here.
Anyway, you ended up with a system half configured from the German and
half configured from the English choice.

I would like to consider this an edge case, which will probably be
resolved when the new localechooser is implemented and #281530 is
resolved.

Cheers,
FJP

I don't use /var/www myself (I recompile suexec support to use homedirs

PS: Just retried the same thing under almost the same conditions (using

Maybe you need to add some sync calls before using umount.

That's a pity.
I'm now setting "security" tag since this bug is a DoS since remote user can
force server to crash.

Bug#290329: missing modules on powerpc images

2005-05-12 Thread Eduard Bloch
severity 290329 grave
thanks

I tried to install Sarge on a ppc and... it failed! Because at least
some modules have been missing. Following semi-official hints, I figured
out that MODULES=dep needs to be set to make it work. This has been
confirmed by Sven (see below).

Read: currently, it is a pain in the ass setting up boot configuration
on prep. You need to change the config, cook initrd image, cook vmlinuz
image, then install it manually. At least the first three steps should
and can be automated.

Regards,
Eduard.

svenl: should I set it to grave?
horms: the only problem with my existing code is that i use absolut
symlinks and not relative ones.
or is it pointless?
Zomb: i would, but i guess jbailey will not fix it, not sure though.
Zomb: you can try, i will support you on this.
ok
Zomb: you can tell jbailey that i told that.
It affects prep and pegasos1, and probably some oldworlds too.
maybe some earlier chrp even.
I will just paste the last lines of IRC log

Actually, I'd prefer the quiltrc file to live with the patches and serie
file (it's precious and should/may be edited by the user), and having a link
in .pc to say where to find all those precious files...

But you're right, that's a good idea, too ;)

Absolutely spot on. Very impressed. We had a RAID1 setup from nothing to
fully installed and working in about 15 minutes. Opted for manual
package installation once the base system was installed. Grub installed
perfectly (and worked with the RAID setup, even better!)

The only real issue I'd raise is the wording for the manual partition
setup. It worked like a charm but it wasnt clear what you had to do -
you have to go through 2 steps to actually create a partition, first the
free space step and then the partition creation on that free space. This
wasnt obvious from the wording. Once we'd worked that out (which
admittedly didnt take long) it was great. My guess is that most users
probably wont go down this route, so only experienced users will
manually set partitions. I wonder whether the interface shouldnt show
the freespace node at all and just allow you to create partitions
directly. I realise that you may have a situation where theres more than
one free space node on the disk but does the user need to know this at
this point in the interface (especially as the majority situation is
probably new disk or disk with single windows partition on that they
want to resize and then add linux partition).

Great work!

Bug#293665: quodlibet: Locking audio device

2005-05-12 Thread Bastian Kleineidam
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I would also like to have the audio device closed when the pause
button is hit, or better yet make an additional stop button.

Right now I am using the dmix ALSA plugin so the device can be used
simultaneously. Perhaps you could add a note like the one below about
the audio device locking? It took me some time to figure that dmix stuff
out, and to detect the sample asound config :)

Locked audio device
===
To prevent quodlibet from locking the sound device, you can use the
"dmix" plugin from the ALSA audio driver. This can be done by copying
the file "/usr/share/doc/libasound2/examples/asound.conf_dmix" to
"$HOME/.asoundrc".
This way, applications using the ALSA audio driver can use the sound
device simultaneously.
See http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=DmixPlugin for more info.

Regards,
 Bastian

Hm, okay. The first issue was a typical layer8 problem. I rebooted the
box from a shell after fixing the boot loader.

The second problem should still be there. Nothing kills base-config when
the SSH session suddenly terminates.

And there may be a message in busybox' reboot command about not doing it
here but in the installer instead (and a --force option to really reboot).

Regards,
Eduard.

Sorry, I cannot reproduce it. I have exactly the same gnome package installed and added the example mail you provided to my imap server.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Sorry, i totally misinterpreted that error message. Turns out my actual
problem is simply a duplicate of bug #294129, and not related/specific
to thunderbird at all.

It does show an oddity in thunderbird, however: the bug is triggered
(deterministically) whenever i click on the mail. However, when I change
the content-type from `application/octet-stream' to something else, the
bug is not triggered anymore. Isn't that strange, given that I haven't
clicked the attachment itself in either case?

Kind regards

That assumtion is wrong. There are nothing a user _have_ to change for their
specific host. What to do (which I did in the package I handed over to you)
was to distribute the unpatched script in the mysql package and a patched
version in the pgsql package...

That way, the script is NOT a config file, but a script as any one else
and the init script (etc) can be hardcoded to use it (in /usr/lib/nagios
or wherever - it's a _SCRIPT_ and hence not arch specific and should/could
be located in /usr/share/nagios).

Just to clarify. There are no configuration in the script, the patch is
very simple/clear:

Can you please check whether installing lesstif1 version 1:0.93.94-11.3
fixes the problem for you? (I guess you've built the CVS version with
OpenMotif instead of LessTif, which hid the bug for you.)

Bug#308783: libxpm4: problems with s_popen (CAN-2004-0914)

2005-05-12 Thread Matej Vela
Package: libxpm4
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12
Severity: grave
Justification: may allow access to the accounts of users who use the package

The CAN-2004-0914 patch introduced a s_popen() function as a safe
replacement for popen(). Instead of invoking a shell, it splits
arguments on whitespace and passes the command directly to execvp(3).
However, it doesn't handle quoting or redirection, so code like

 WrFFrI.c:339: snprintf(buf, sizeof(buf), "gzip -q > \"%s\"", filename);
 WrFFrI.c:340: if (!(mdata->stream.file = s_popen(buf, "w")))

results in a ">" argument and superfluous quotes:

 execve("/bin/gzip", ["gzip", ">", "\"foo.gz\""], [/* 19 vars */])

This completely breaks the transparent compression and decompression.

Furthermore, since gzip processes all arguments regardless of errors, an
attacker can use filenames with whitespace to compress arbitrary files:
(xpmtest taken from )

 # ./xpmtest crab.xpm 'fnord -v /etc/hosts.deny fnord.gz'
 w=28, h=28, cpp=2, cols=6, vmask=, hotspot=0,0
gzip: >: No such file or directory
gzip: "fnord: No such file or directory
 /etc/hosts.deny: -50.0% -- replaced with /etc/hosts.deny.gz
gzip: fnord.gz": No such file or directory

The above would effectively disable TCP wrappers. The -r option can be
used to compress whole directory trees.

s_popen() also has issues with error handling, signals, and runaway
child processes. All of this has been fixed in X11R6.8.2, though I
don't think they're aware of the security implications (patches at
are still vulnerable).

Thanks,

Matej

Bug#308782: Problems with kdevelo3

2005-05-12 Thread Ralf Seliger
Package: kdevelop3
Version: 3.2.0-1
There are two apps that come with kdevelop3: kdevassistant and
kdevdesigner. Both apps look for their respective start-up splash-pngs in

/usr/share/apps/kdevelop
kdevelop3 itself looks for its splash-png in
/usr/share/apps/kdevelop3
However, the debian package I installed from (testing or unstable) put
all three pngs into

/usr/share/apps/kdevelop3
with the result that both kdevdesigner and kdevassistant crashed at
start up. I fixed it by doing

cp -r /usr/share/apps/kdevelop3/pics /usr/share/apps/kdevelop/pics

Yeah, I saw that later on. But that actually makes things WORSE,
not better!

A 'common' package is for stuff that applies to ALL packages in
the group it's for (nagios-{pgsql,mysql,text} in this case).

The *mysql* stuff does NOT apply to the pgsql package and vise
versa...

Conclution: The common package should NOT contain ANY database
specific documentation etc..

This is a problem in the myspell-fr package, where egrave is missing from
the TRY line.

Attached patch seems to work here. myspell-fr maintainer, please verify the
preferences ordering and that there are no more missing 8bit french chars
there (seems that at least {a,e,o}-hat are also missing, not added in the
patch).

I am reassigning this bug report to myspell-fr with a lowered severity, it
does not affect all accented characters.

Cheers,

Bug#308790: firebird2-dev: /usr/lib/firebird2/include has a symlink to ../../include, which doesn't exist

2005-05-12 Thread Kjetil Kjernsmo
Package: firebird2-dev
Version: 1.5.1-4
Severity: normal

I was trying to install Perl DBD::InterBase, and it complains that it
can't find my firebird installation, so I got the firebird2-dev package
installed. I started to look through it, I found that there is
a /usr/lib/firebird2/include directory, which contains a
single symlink, but that points to ../../include which doesn't exist.
I went on #debian on irc.freenode.net, and was immediately told to file
a bug, so here we go... :-)

My problems installing DBD::InterBase was due to not having installed *utils*,
but I figured this was a nasty little thing anyway :-)

That's all I have, please let me know if there is something more that
needs checking.

Cheers,

Kjetil

Bug#308793: Web server not restarted after installation

2005-05-12 Thread torsten
Package: php4-imap
Version: 4.3.10-13

When installing php4-imap, the line

extension=imap.so

is added to

/etc/php4/apache2/php.ini

which is correct. But this will come into effect only after doing a reload
of the Apache webserver, which doesn't happen automatically.

Maybe this should be added to the postinstall script?

Bug#308792: After the last update Via C3 systems give assertion failed in ld.so at boot

2005-05-12 Thread Anton Ivanov
Package: libc6

current 2.6.10-1-386 (subversion 10)
whatever the debian installer tries to put on the system when booted
with 2.6 - most likely
current 2.6.10-1-386
2.6.9 (686 config altered to optimize for 386).

with the default 2.4.18 image from woody will boot normally

with 2.6.10-2 and 2.6.9 will boot normally if the libc6 is 2.3.2.ds1-20 or

I am looking at the changelog for ds1-21 and so far I have no idea what could

Bug#308791: Owner and permissions of /etc/horde/imp4 directory and contained config files

2005-05-12 Thread torsten
Package: imp4
Version: 4.0.2-2

Dear package maintainer,

the /etc/horde/imp4 directory as well as the config files in there
installed by the packe are owned by root:root and have drwxr-xr-x which
means that PHP canot write to it. This makes it impossible to edit
configurations through the Administration -> Setup portion of the Horde
GUI.

As the Apache webserver is usually running as www-data the files should
probably be owned by that user / group?

i'm not really convinced on this. nagios-common is imo not only

Hi Goedson,

Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to reproduce this bug on my sarge
system with gnomebaker 0.3-3, so I'm unable to confirm why your updated
snapshot fixes the bug. Without that, I don't think it's a good idea to
push in an updated package, containing various other changes (including UI
changes).

Do you really consider this bug release-critical? Since it seems to only
crash for one person, I'm not sure I agree.

I use pdns with the 'bind' backend using an existing bind9 configuration

Bug#308800: logcheck-database: new rsync output doesn't match the existing ignore rules

2005-05-12 Thread Paul Slootman
Package: logcheck-database
Severity: normal

Concerning the file /etc/logcheck/ignore.d.server/rsync :

The current rsync daemon (2.6.4) gives messages such as this:

May 12 04:13:01 hostname rsyncd[5675]: sent 1415 bytes received 88 bytes
total size 2550200

The print format is now:
sent %.0f bytes received %.0f bytes total size %.0f
This used to be (2.6.3 and earlier versions):
wrote %.0f bytes read %.0f bytes total size %.0f

I'd suggest replacing the current line:

^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ rsyncd\[[0-9]+\]: wrote [0-9]+ bytes read
[0-9]+ bytes total size [0-9]+$

with:

^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ rsyncd\[[0-9]+\]: sent [0-9]+ bytes
received [0-9]+ bytes total size [0-9]+$

Alternatively you could just add the new line...

Thanks,
