Please, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/775196 It's very important you visit this bug and answer if it affects you. There is no real workaround. The bug is random and restarting notification-area-applet until it shows all tray icons is pointless. We're still with the bug and we even don't know what causes it. I think it's related to Compiz, because switching to Metacity fixes the issue. Note that you have to restart your Qt application after switching to Metacity. So it's possible it's Compiz bug. I had this problem on Unity desktop, but since then I have re-installed Ubuntu Natty from a setup disk. Before I had a weather indicator which showed an icon on the notification area. If I then started Skype I got the problem of a 1 pixel icon. However now I have no other indicators installed and I have no issues with the Skype icon whatsoever. I was and still am running Compiz. I have not tried installing any other Qt applications though. I, too, had a weather indicator on the panel (that one which comes with the clock) which I cannot make working again in Natty with GNOME2 (Compiz), although I can see the weather information below the time zone map when the clock is expanded - don't know if this is related, though. I oppose calling this uncritical, because this affects Skype which I need to use every day and once you close its window there is no way to get it back (except for the killall notification-area-applet work- around) while Skype's process is still running. I did not find any setting in Skype that would tell it to terminate once I close its window. With all this compiz unity related bugs, and with the developers already claiming that gnome-panel is unsupported and gnome-panel bugs are invalid, I'm definitely switching to Xfce. if this is not a serious bug I don't know what it is! still being unassigned is simply a disgrace... seriously how can someone use this thing if most Qt tray icons are not showing? because of this (not to mention other hicks of lesser importance e.g. the gnome battery indicator which is not one, ia32_libs issues etc.) Natty is in my opinion still in B status (B for bullshit and not beta). Skype icon comes after kill the skype process and restart it, in my natty x64. But postpone start (sleep a few seconds before launch skype) doesn't work for me. I noticed that: if I run skype as first iconized application.. it shows up. If I run pidgin before skype, then skype only appears if I remove and add again the notification applet. If I run pidgin, shutter and skype, skype icon doesn't appear no matter what I do. I noticed something interesting: sometimes the system boots up very fast (most of the times) and sometimes it takes a while (not just a little longer but a lot longer). When the system boots fast I get 1 px icons and when it takes its time it shows the icons correctly (both Skype and Vlc). Another workaround for this: Go to skype settings and check start skype in minimized mode. I have the same thing with Eiskaltdc++ Qt. It seems that this bug affects all QT applications which minimize to tray. My problem happens on 11.04 amd64, Unity desktop. I installed Skype through Software Center. At the beginning, everything goes well. After a long time use (maybe 1 or 2 hours, actually it's not long on my machine), Skype icon in notification area disappears, but the process is still running. There's even no 1 pixel indicator. No message can be received and no notification.I have to kill the process and start Skype again. Same thing for me in Ubuntu Classic. Like Edward Deng, in Unity there's not even a pixel indicator. The workaround suggested by Teo Siang Hoe using the shell script worked for me. Problem seems to be connected with compiz... I have another workaround, for those with whom reading notification area to panel does not work. Each time I open Skype I change Compiz to Metacity Window Manager - MWM - install compiz fusion icon from Software Center . While Metacity is enabled REMOVE notification area from panel and add again and same with vlc. Now you should see icons of skype and vlc (this was for when you started skype or vlc while compiz was selected a window manager) other way around is to switch to MWM first then start Skype or VLC and go back to compiz I know it is annoying, but this one works for me Problem is that on one machine ( Radeon HD 5650) reading notification applet workd, on another (Radeon HD 4350) it does not... For some reason right now it all works just fine, both Vlc and Skype icons. I installed Apache2 package, mySql both server and client and Mysql administrator and Query Browse, and php5 and php5-xdebug. I also installed Kompozer and updated Netbeans and that is pretty much it. After restarting the computer the panel seems to work fine icons showing allright. I found another workaround for skype icon: I created a script containing sleep 10 skype and add it to the startup applications. Here's a crappy workaround for people on 'classic mode' that have the problem. But when you have more than 1 QT application ones have 1px icon and others the regular icon. systray application from QT Demo has been tried in fluxbox Window manager and wordked properly. systray application in lucid works properly with the gnome-panel provided. Same bug here with Skype. Note that the first skype instance is pretty much invisible in the notification area but if I start another one the second works well (except the fact thatI get an error because there is already a skype running of course). I can then kill the first one and the the icon is still here. Same here on my (upgraded) natty, no icons for Clementine and Skype in the notification bar in Unity or Ubuntu classic.
