[slim] Re: Administer Linux from XP Pro?

2006-08-03 Thread ComputerX

I'm compelled to post since at the moment I am doing the oposite. Using
rdesktop on a linux laptop to control the W2K Advanced Server box that
has my SlimServer on it. I just thought that was funny.

JeffCharles Wrote:
I especially like what NWP wrote: But the best part about a linux
server is you really don't need to administer it. Once it is set up, it
just runs and you can forget about it. Sounds good to me.

That is dangerous advice. Unpatched computers are bad news.
Historically unpatched unix-like machines were especially bad since a
hacker could do more damage to your network from a unix-like macine
than from a Windows machine. Now days I don't know if that is as true.
Whatever you build you will need to keep it patched. Several
distributions have automated ways of doing that. Personally I tend to
build servers on SuSE since I have had very good luck with YOU (YaST
Online Update.) The latest SuSE dropped YaST for something new that
doesn't seem to work as well.

Don't expect linux to be easy. It can be a huge time sink.

If you are serious about *learning* linux, as opposed to *using* linux,
you might want to try Gentoo. I have been a linux user for about seven
years. Before that I was a user of FreeBSD, Irix, SunOS, and a little
Solaris. I also admin a handfull of machines. I have learned as much
in a couple months with Gentoo as I did in all those years with the
others. You have to do frickin' everything by hand but you learn
things like what the last two numbers in the /etc/fstab actually mean.
I always wondered what they did. The Gentoo docs explained it.

Good luck, and don't sell Windows short. It really doesn't suck any
less than the others.

Dan

Not everywhere is having power problems

I can confirm this: I remember two outages in the past 5 or more years.
Once it was due to the company. And once it was my girlfriend blowing a
fuse while fiddling with some wiring - because she didn't want me to shut
down my server :-)

OTOH there are places where you simply can't work without a UPS: I've

[slim] Easy to use back up program ?

2006-08-03 Thread Deaf Cat

Hiya,

Not exactly brill with computers, and have been copying files across to
my external drive, but it is getting a bit confusing what with the
laptop also carrying Slimserver and it would be good to know a reliable
back up program is checking that various folders all have the same
information in them.

I guess there is such a program, but I'm afraid I have not really got a
clue where to start looking for one, very much look forward to hearing
any pointers if you have any ideas.

Thank you :)

robocopy is a tool by MS. It's been recommended here before. Search the

It will be interesting when Sean or Dean describe how the digital

speculate that cement is still wet as these features can probably be
 accomplished in software / firmware.

Perhaps you will find some clues in the 'Digital Input' plugin in
SlimServer 6.5...

Even though I've always been with the same power company, I've lived in
many regions of the province of Ontario over the last 10 years and
performance is dramatically different depending where you live:

Ottawa: extremely reliable, can go for years without failure

Sarnia: despite frequent storms, very reliable. I suppose it's due to
the chemical plants in town who all need reliable electricity.

North Bay: extended power failure every time there's a storm. Power
failures for unexplained reasons as well.

Espanola (northern Ontario near Sudbury): power failure every time
there's a storm, but not many storms.

London: power failure every time there's a storm, and since London is
Canada's lightning capital, that's 2-3 times a week in the summer.
However the power failures are brief, 1-2 seconds. Makes it hard to
maintain impressive uptime on a server though:

Yes, of course.

The uptime on my router hasn't been longer than 2-3 days for about 2
weeks now due to all the power bumps. Not failures, just long enough
to cause a reboot.

I have three or four UPS in my basement server farm which is
where I keep my SlimServer, my cable modem, my firewall box,
and the machine that hosts http://www.pfarrell.com/
It is really just some space next to the furnace and water heater.

There is a little one for just the cable modem and switches,
a moderate one for the slimserver and a huge heavy thing
for the dual-processor Xeon servers.

2006-08-03 Thread Mark Lanctot

Yes, I was going to recommend Robocopy as well.

It looks a bit dense at first because it's a command-line tool working
off switches, but once you make a batch file (just write the command
with the switches and save it as something.bat) you never have to
mess with it again.

There are lots of examples of which switches to use once you find the
thread.

I'm using:

Code:

robocopy k:\ m:\ /mir /xd System Volume Information Recycler
/log:C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Desktop\Music Backup.log /np /tee
  pause

in my batch file. This says backup K:\ to M:\, mirror, ignore the
System Volume Information and Recycler directories, write a log to
C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Desktop\Music Backup.log, don't show
progress bars, show progress in console window.

Mirror deletes files if they are deleted in the source directory so
that the backup is a perfect copy. I ignore the System Volume
Information directory because Windows can't read it and crashes when it
tries to copy it. I don't show progress bars because that takes
forever.

I haven't tried in a while, but last time I tried the Sirius plugin
worked fine with a SB1 connected to a windows-based SlimServer. The

[slim] QNAp, SB3 and Terrastation...

2006-08-03 Thread iangude

Simple question (I hope!)...

I currently have a SB3, with Slimsever running on my PC, and my music

Is it possible for me to purchase a QNAP 101 (with preinstalled
slimserver), and point a 'shortcut' from the Music folder to my other
NAS, hence using the QNAP to run Slimserver (and store a small amount
of music etc), but storing my main music share on another NAS (on the
same network obviously..).

Or any other thoughts on how I can set this up to eliviate the need for
the PC ?

exactly the size of the 770. the two can fit in a (large) pants pocket

Opera is the web browser. It must be a pared down version from the full

mini, made for PDAs. My experience is that the 770 browser is
*superb*.

And yes, it's a true touchscreen.

FWIW, internettablettalk is indeed the de facto 770 forum, but to be

Urp! $100 for a keyboard? I guess I've gotten spoiled by never having
to pay more than $20 for a keyboard for the past several years. The
website that Ben cited above mentions that people have gotten usb
keyboards to work with the 770. Is there anything special that one
needs to do for that?

After 2 days of excellent service where I could log into Live365 and

Live365 website error, try again

There was an error loading the remote feed for SHOUTcast Internet

Have been re-trying at various intervals, no luck. Not aware of any
changes, re-sets, firewall changes, new software that would have caused
this. Was working fine last night. Unable to find references that would
indicate a solution on the site or Google. Any help greatly

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-08-03 Thread jimbo_l

Hi all,

I know this is a bit off-topic, but is anyone else using the QNAP's
Q-RAID feature? I recently bought a cheapo external disk enclosure and
a 500GB drive (the same model as in the QNAP) in order to use Q-RAID
and my initial impressions/thoughts are:

1) I didn't realise that the QNAP had an external (eSATA) socket rather
than SATA (they're a different shape) so had to order an SATA to eSATA
cable. Doh!

2) Once I received the cable I had to cut down the rubber part of the
eSATA end to get it to fit into the QNAP case, which seems to have a
recessed connector. Even then it doesn't seem to fit very securely.

3) Once everything was connected there were no problems getting Q-RAID
to work - just switch it on in the eSATA Disk page and hit Apply. The
disks then chuntered away for a while (several hours) with the progress
being shown on the eSATA Disk page.

4) Now that I have the external drive switched on, both disks seems to
spend most of their time chuntering away, even when nothing external is
accessing the QNAP, which means they don't sleep as much (or maybe at
all - I've not been paying much attention). You can 'eject' the drive
(from the eSATA Disk page) and switch it off, and it will re-sync when
you next turn it on, but that's not an ideal solution.

5) There also seems to be a large discrepancy in the reported free
space between the internal and external drives. As I write, the
internal drive has 423427MB free versus 378517MB for the external
drive. I would have expected them to be the same(?) Should I have
formatted it as FAT rather than EXT3? I wouldn't have thought so as I
expect the internal drive would be EXT3 as it's Linux-based (I think).

I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts, anyway.

Cheers.

Yes, it's normal, and yes, it's kind of a horsepower issue. If the
server were threaded then a higher priority could be given to the
streaming, but as it is the dropouts are normal. If you have a SB1 or
a slimp3 then you're assured to get dropouts. With an SB2 or 3 you may
not get them (larger buffers). Regardless, the problem will likely be
fixed with the next release of slimserver as the scanning process has
been split from the server code.

[slim] Re: Easy to use back up program ?

2006-08-03 Thread joek

I use Backup Exec to backup all my systems, except for audio and video
files. For video and audio I use Delta Copy which is a gui and
scheduler front-end to the rsync command-line program. Delta Copy is
free and runs on Windows. rsync is unix based and comes with Linux, so
you have cross platform compatiability.

In my environment the mp3 library is on Linux, but Samba shared to my
Windows machine. So, I use Delta Copy to sync a copy to my Windows
system for backup. I also sync another copy to a removeable USB hard
drive, which is kept offline.

Yes. There will be a menu choice in SlimServer and the top-level
setup menu to switch between the digital inputs.

2) Will we be able to create a soft label on the Transporter's

I don't think this idea has come up before, but it's a good one! I'm
not sure it'll happen for the initial release, but is certainly
possible in a future software update.

3) Will any given Transporter digital outputs be able to be selected
as a Servo Output - outputting what the Transporter is receiving

it's ethernet ports?
All of the outputs will have the same data on them, namely what is
decoded from the CPU.

4) Will any given Transporter digital output be able to be
selected as

a #8220;Tape Loop#8221; type output - which is to say whatever input
is selected will be looped through this output when configured as a
Tape Loop?
I believe that when you switch to one of the digital inputs, it will
automatically be passed through to the digital outs. It should be
possible to disable the digital out too.

Finally, I am amazed at how responsive and clever Slim Devices is
proving to be as it listens to it's customers and designed it's last
two products; A $300 entry level Network Music Player and a $2K
audiophile Network Media Player + external DAC w/ super low jitter +
Digital Pre-Amp w/ short audio paths and Jung based power supplies
is a

nice year's work.

Thanks so much!

[slim] Switching between SlimServer and Squeezenetwork

2006-08-03 Thread matt24

After 3 months of using my SB3, I'm fairly happy but I've got the
following wish, which I think would improve it's usability a lot.

I'd like to have my squeezebox to always be connected to something, at
least so the clock RSS can always be displayed. Slimserver runs on
my laptop and cannot be left to run 24 hours. However, my internet is
always connected.

Is it possible to have the following funcionality with the SB3:-

With no SlimServer (SS) available, the SB3 automatically connects to
Squeezenetwork (SN).

When a PC with SS becomes available, the SB3 senses it and disconnects
from SN connects to SS, as long as SN is in idle/off mode (ie not
streaming anything).

When that SS is no longer available, it connects to SN again.

Without this, I really cannot use it as an alarm clock as I have no
guarantee that it will always be connected to a network service.

Is there any way to do this now?

manually connect the SB3 to the Squeezenetwork, so that it goes to
clock mode.. but I'd rather it just switched automatically when my

Not really. In china, you cannot use mains powered clock radios since
they use the 50Hz to maintain accuracy. In China, it's never exactly
50Hz so the clock can drift up to 5-10 minutes a day! Not wanting to
use battery clocks, an internet clock which is always correct is quite
usefull to me.

[slim] Experience with powerline ethernet?

2006-08-03 Thread Omri

I am using two Squeezeboxes with Mac OSX 10.4.7 and an Apple Extreme
base station. I would say that about 60% of the time the wireless
network functions beautifully...and 40% of the time it is a disaster,
with frequent dropouts.

It would be expensive to wire my house with ethernet cable, so I am
contemplating setting up a powerline ethernet network. I am wondering
if others have had experience with this, and whether it results in
stable listening.

Thank you.
