I believe there is a way to do this now with an appropriate plug-in and software on the server. My personal level of interest in at best ambivalent about the rest of the ideas. I can see how some people would like them, but they also seem to be outside the primary focus of the device. I'm not knocking them as ideas, but they would not be selling points to me. I like the concept of wireless bluetooth headphones, but my experience with bluetooth wireless headsets on my phone is that they are spotty at best. Definitely not hi-fi IMO, and I'm not even a "real" audiophile. I'd also like to see a return to something more along the lines of the SB2 form factor, but I know lots of people prefer the SB3 form factor, too. Again, just personal preference on my part. I'd still like to see a decent SB/Boombox I can carry around the house and yard. :-) The idea of a SB2 combined with that fancy display audio remote from logitech has some appeal, too. But the problem with that, IMO is that I prefer to have one universal remote. Maybe that could be combined with the Harmony remote series in some way. > WOW, I should be paid for these ideas! And guess which plugin >overides the original 'Save playlist' remote command with another one? > Well, yes I am the author of that plugin. I didn't realise you were using it. There's no need for the save playlist plugin if you are using PlaylistMan (there's an option to save the playlist within my plugin). For others reading this thread, Save Playlist uses press & hold play on the now playing screen. My plugin doesn't do anything with the play button in this mode; my plugin provides a menu option to save the playlist when the user presses & holds the add button. I believe the two used to work side by side without problems, although I disabled Save Playlist quite a long time ago (when I pinched the functionality for my plugin :-)). I recently found that my PlaylistMan plugin doesn't work if I have TrackStat plugin installed, because this overrides play.hold. It's an annoying feature of plugins that only one can register a custom map for any keys in a particular mode. The only way around this (to get many plugins to use different keys in the same mode) would seem to be to manually edit a IR keyboard map file to invoke the correct functions. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: this is a real challenge...slimserver problem
If the SB is connected directly to ethernet port on modem/router, either static or dhcp, can be pinged. As I said, the SB works perfectly - but only if connected directly. If the SB is connected via dlan, either static or dhcp, ping doesn't work. But if I connect another item to dlan (xbox, macbook, etc) ping works. I know some people might say "what's the prob? just connect directly". But it's not practical as SB on different floor to modem/router, and besides it's been working fine all this time so just want to get it back as was. Are there any SB engineers/techie people around who might be able to analyze SB console/crash log if I send to them? As I've noted in the bug report (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4384), this IS a transcoding problem. If I turn transcoding off, the end of the songs are not truncated (SB3 or SoftSqueeze). I still strongly believe that this bug was introduced after MP3 gapless playback was implemented. My faceplate was coming loose so I e-mailed support and got a replacement. It was easy to replace, but if I were Slim, I would definitely want to invalidate warranties if faceplates are being replaced for no reason other than the customer desiring black vs. silver. A. You're exposing the guts of the device when you remove the facelplate. Accidents happen. Screwdrivers slip. Cokes spill. B. When you tighten the screws into the new faceplate, you really have to bear down on the wrench, because the threads are not tapped into the screw holes in the faceplate. Several times, the wrench slipped on me slightly damaging the heads on the hex screws -- and potentially gouging the back of the unit. C. Because you have to bear down so hard tightening the screws, you don't get a good feel for when you're about to over-tighten. If you over-tighten, you end up with a deformed faceplate that may start coming off in the future -- the very condition that led to replacement faceplates in the first place. -- jonheal Jon Heal says: Have a nice day! http://www.theheals.org/ jonheal's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2133 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30362 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I had the same problem back on 11/29. I was using the same Slimserver / Squeezebox setup without problems for over a year (I had upgraded slimserver many times during that period). For some reason on 11/29 all of my squeezeboxes (I have 3) stopped working. I narrowed it down to the fact that my Linksys router (WRT54G v6) wasn't assigning DHCP addresses wired or wireless. I rebooted everything several times. I noticed that on the Linksys site there was new firmware for my router from 11/27 so I figured that I would give it a try. It worked. [slim] If your SB breaks, you're stuffed!
I got my first SB2 April 2005 direct from Slim Devices. As I live in Ireland and there are no dealers here I had no choice. Anyway, being so in love with this little gadget, earlier this year I picked up another SB2 from ebay for just over a £100. Money was tight and I could not stretch to a new SB3. When the 2nd hand SB2 turned up it was dead. After a little reseach I found the CPU had come loose, I fixed it within a few minutes and it was working fine. Anyway, 4 or 5 months later it just died. I tried everything, contacted Slim and they said it needed to come back for repair. As It was 2nd hand I had to pay for the repair. Long story short = the cost of the repair + the postage back to sunny California from rainy Ireland worked out more than I paid for the thing to start with. It's a shame I cannot send it somewhere in Ireland/UK for fixing. I feel pretty fed up about the situation. I cannot afford to get the thing fixed and £100 for 4 months use isn't a great investment. Not really. If I understand slimserver correctly (which isn't guaranteed) even if the data are coming from the external USB disk, it has to go to slimserver to create the stream that feeds the SB. If it's a wireless SB, then you have a two-wireless-hop situation, which *increases* the likelihood of dropout. Not so simple. Unfortunately the broadband situation in Ireland is a disaster where the network is effectively owned by a monopoly and has been badly maintained as a result of many privitisations/floatations, re-financing and resulting cash extraction. The regulator is so weak it hasn't enforced local loop unbundling to get competitors in and the wireless and satellite alternatives are only available in limited areas. This means very many people just cannot get broadband and have to make do with poor quality dialup. According the recent OECD report there are only 372,000 broadband subscribers in Ireland (pop about 4.5m) - 25th out of 30 countries surveyed Top six - Denmark, the Netherlands, Iceland, Korea, Switzerland and Finland. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30417 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I am definitely with the folks saying that we don't want to lose site of the core functionality of the SB. That said, here are my suggestions. 1. The SB3 has great sound now, but everything and anything that can be done to improve sound even more without increasing the cost should be near the top in terms of priority. 2. I do view the display as a part of the core functionality (it's one of the keys to making the SB such a blast to use). A larger display might be nice, but what I'd love to see even more would be an auxiliary color LCD panel below the main fluorescent display that could be used to display the album cover. Now that would be neat. 3. A accessory Sonos-like remote. This concept could be expanded to include a headphone jack and/or line outs. Re: [slim] Re: I've just called customer service - no way to get black faceplate separartely
I get that people might think it is an odd change in message. The main point is that the answer was 'no' and people are trying to change that response is very much the worst way possible. show interest, not make threats and disparaging remarks. Someone recently wondered why there are less and less posts from SD employees. Higher workload would be my first guess. But, I think the motivation for reading is decreasing. Thing is, if there REALLY is enough interest and it REALLY is just a simple thing to provide a faceplate, then I sense a business opportunity for anyone who believes in the conjectures. The fact is still that every one all got what they paid for when they paid for it. There is never a promise that things won't change. Yes, there was the SBG upgrade, but when SBG became SB2, SD wasn't out there offering new PCB's for people to insert. The point is that invalidating warantee is a business risk. Allowing users to fix a missing cap in order to repair antenna noise is one thing. Replacing a faultily assembled faceplace is not the same as providing faceplates simply for cosmetic reasons. The former prevents expensive returns and repairs, while the latter is simply adding risk to something that is currently 100% of what was promised. As we all know, expressed interest is not something that is ignored. That is something that should be protected. If the badmouthing starts causing barriers (and it does) then everyone loses out. If even one developer, for example, decides that reading the forum too much unpleasantness for the effort, then that is a critical link lost when you want to convince someone of the benefit of a desired feature. I've seen it stated that the expectation is that they should all be around and reading, but they are human beings and the points made here, or just one of many venues. Do you listen to the sounds that make your head ache? Most companies don't allow their employees to take part in forums. I am increasingly aware of reasons for that. Once lost, it is a hard thing to get back. Sure, sometimes people are frustrated. I get that. If we find there is a lot of demand for an accessory or replacement part then we can add a new SKU, but it is very hard to support during the initial launch of a new product. We have not _always_ offered upgrade parts for this sort of thing, so I find it rather silly that one would blame Logitech for the lack of black faceplate upgrades. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30362 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Quoting Gildahl <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: 1. The SB3 has great sound now, but everything and anything that can be done to improve sound even more without increasing the cost should be near the top in terms of priority. I expect you will definitely see this in some form for another. When Transporter was announced, it was said that many lessons were learned. These lessons would then be applied back through the product line where there is a good fit. 2. Now that would be neat. expensive for a single-use hardware feature, but certainly not the first time I've seen it requested. 3. A accessory Sonos-like remote. This concept could be expanded to include a headphone jack and/or line outs. Logitech has a product that might just fit the bill: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/detailsharmony/US/EN,CRID=2084,CONTENTID=12498 It takes a while for merging companies to get up and running in conjunction, but tossing a few of these in the right hands could be an easy motivator (expertly subtle hint, don't you think?) -kdf ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

We have not _always_ offered upgrade parts for this sort of thing, so I find it rather silly that one would blame Logitech for the lack of black faceplate upgrades. Agreed. This is a ridiculous thing to be moaning about. Thanks for your continued participation here. On a tangentially related note, I haven't found Logitech to have bad support. I just broke the ear piece on a old and now discontinued Logitech Bluetooth headset. I caught it on my coat and it broke. Clearly my fault and not really a warranty issue. I emailed Logitech and asked if I could buy parts. I couldn't but they sent me a brand new, top-of-the line Bluetooth headset as a replacement at no cost, even though I told them I'd broken my original and it wasn't a warranty issue. That's above and beyond in my book. Whining like a child because something new is released and you wish you had it instead of what you knew you were getting when you bought is absurd. [slim] Re: SB3 and Arcam Solo
I'd like to hear comments on this as well. I love the SB and I like the Solo very much except that some people have criticised its lack of Digital Input. From what I understand (not much then) is that the benefit of a Dig In is that the Solo's super DAC can do all the processing instead of your cheapo MiniDisc Player or whatever plugged in the back. The MD player becomes just a spinner/transport and the superior Solo DAC takes care of the sound, rather than the simpler/cheaper one on the MD player. Except the Solo lacks one of these inputs. So does that mean the SB or other device converts Pandora / FLACs / whatever to analogue for the Solo to receive OK ?? And then this bypasses the expensive Solo DAC you have shelled out for ? I only want to buy the Solo if it is at least a little 'future-proof', i.e. will make the very best of lossless, digitised media. -- Digital_Chick Digital_Chick's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7994 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30357 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: SlimLite + NAS on board
I'm back, I follow your hints and install SlimServer 6.5 on a 4 years old Laptop (PIII,1GHz, 512MB, XPproSP2) it went nice ok it tooks me slightly more than 10min, but after one hour I was able to play music (MP3 192kB files) from the server Laptop on a 2nd Laptop using SoftSqueeze. I was proud of that, it works also while 2nd Laptop was connected by WiFi. This motivate me for more, so I install and configure EAC + AccurateRip + FLAC.exe following the installation guide in the Wiki. I also manage this to work even it tooks me about 5 hours effort until I got my first ever .FLAC file. I was also able to stream those new files using SoftSqueeze, but obviously could not differentiate them from MP3 due to the bad Laptop embeded speakers sound quality. I had the oportunity to borrow a SqueezBox3 for this w-e and bring it to work user interface is straight forward. This evening I was listening FLAC on my HiFi system since about 3 hours, audio quality was really good (SB3 -> optical out > HT (preamp) ->Power amp). Now I could feel the power and superiority of FLAC against MP3 (same file back to back). I was very excited of all the tests and comparisons I plan to do this w-e until the music suddenly stop. The raison is the die of the server Laptop HDD, luckly I have a copy of all the music I've ripped, but this is the end of my SB3 test Now you maybe better understand why having a stand alone mode would have allow me to listen SB3 streamed music (direct out from my backup HDD) while I reinstall a new HDD + all the apps in my Laptop instead of that, my CD player will do the job. This first experience convince me on two things: - FLAC quality is really good and can/will replace all my CD - Slim products need a stand alone mode to become a real CD player alternative -- your momo your momo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8095 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30080 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

When I've started this thread the last of my intention was to bash SD. I've found both their product (sb3 in my case) and customer service outstanding at least, really on of the very best I ever encountered I do understand the reasons while they reluctant to offer it and I only wanted to try and persuade them there is enough people interested, it might be a business point for them to do so (I also suggested in this case, every purchaser will sign some sort of waiver). If they decide not to do it, it's perfectly fine with me since after all it's a minor cosmetic point. It never was promised and to criticize them for not doing it is baseless and unfair. -- sl789 sl789's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5667 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30362 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: IR Emitter Question
I was using IRBlaster to turn on my Yamaha YSP-800 when I turned on Squeezebox. The YSP is on my wall as my speaker+amp for my bedroom. I wanted to use this setup as an alarm clock, yet when the alarm would come on, my YSP would not. I figured out what I was doing wrong - I was setting IRBlaster too literally. That is, I was configuring it too apply two steps, SB3 power + YSP power. But turning on SB3 power is "built in". So you just configure the SB3 remote power button to turn on your amp, and when you hit the power button, it turns on your amp AND your SB3. So now it works.
