[slim] Typos and setup question
Hello, Can someone please explain to me why exactly one needs a slimdevices remote i.e jive to setup a sd receiver? For me being blind it would be all right to control the receiver via Squeezecenter for a start. Never using the display or the ir remote anyway. And it is a far better price. ;) Well, and then I just wanted to point out for it is an official site. There are two typos in specs page for the receiver. I am not a native speaker and normally wouldn't opt to correct : --- snipp --- Squeezbox Controller required for network setup Windows: 733Mhz Pentium running Window 2000/XP/Vista --- Snipp --- Right that is all for now. Re: [slim] new controller with sb3?
You say sbc controls sc7 and that in turn controls the players. What about setup? Is SC7 able to setup a new i.e sbr player on it's own? Cause if the controler doesn't interact with the player directly there must be a way to setup the player via the server. Not sure how that might work though. Anyway, it would be great since we would be able to find players on the lan without using a nonexistent or (for the blinds nonusable display) on the players. Re: [slim] Transporter II form factor
Hello, Well, I agree. When opening the tp I was tempted to put something into it just to fill the space ... Here is what I thaught of: - solid state hard disk and some unnecessary Slimserver overhead ;) - Cd drive to rip or directly play music - heavy duty copper shielding for the different components to electrically isolate them and to be more convincing for such audio- and electrofools as I am Anyway the tp is not HEAVY enough Zarnash (have to pay the cables still ) says heavy equippment sounds better because of less mechanic vibration. ;)) He argues that electric parts in motion generate magnetic fields or such. ;-P And well I forgot we have to have a tube in it I don't know where but it will sound substantially better if we put a tube believe it Harmony has prooven it. ;) So what. Because slimproto is proprietary in that it is not mainstream standard. But when thinking about dlna on sB3 one has to consider that xbox and ps3 and alike a huge monsters in calculation power and what I wouldn't like. The arn't as silent as SB3. Well, perhaps a noxon 2 audio or such would be silent but they are not my cup of tea. Only thing I can not understand why does the opener of this thread not install slimserver on his synology nas. [slim] Some unsorted questions
Hi, I have got some rather diverse questions and do not want to open so many threads: 1. Can I have the volume control in Slimserver not range from 0 to 11 but from -48db to 0db? My preamp has this sort of scale and it would be easier to understand this way. 2. Is it possible to try squeezecenter 7.0 while sticking to 6.5.4 on my main server? I have got a nas running 6.5.4 stable for a while and want to stick to it since SC7 will need repackaging for that nas. But I would like to look at SC7. Will there be firmware problems or will each server feed my players back and forth with respective firmware? 3. How exactly is setup of sbr with sbc done? I heard that the controler talks to slimserver and that it inturn talks to the receiver. This seemingly isn't true for setup right? I am asking since the sbr lacks a display and would therefore be THE device for blind people you are quite into music listening mosttimes but don't have decent audio gear. If the setup could be done without the remote that is of no use to the blinds right now the sbr allone would be a real deal! -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44015 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Squeezebox Receiver is a wifi ap ?
Hello, just read that there is no wireless router required for squeezebox controler to get access to wired ethernet lans and SC7 since it connects via the receiver. That you mean that the receiver is some sort of access point. This was not the case with sb3 and transporter. They only could bridge wired to wifi not vice versa as it seems to be the case for the receiver. My question now is: Could a wifi enabled device such as the nokia 770 or my pda or even my notebook access my lan wirelessly without me having a wifi router working? I ask since I won't use the remote much but intend to replace it with a pda. Thanks for enlightenment on that. [slim] Use tp's optical output to switch amp on and off ?
Hello, I noticed that the optical output of tp is active whenever the unit is connected to a power source (dc) even if it is powered down. When it went inactive whenever I powered off the tp and went active again whenever the tp is powered on via the remote or sc7 it would be possible to switch an amp I v2 (maker is Audionet)(could be a power amp that I would consider) on and off as needed. You get the point? The amp has an optical input which is only used to decide if a signal is present. When that signal is present the unit is switched on. Without that signal the unit remains silent. That optical input does NOT transport digital audio but is only a means of switching the device via an other device. Optical spdif is used to electrically isolate the power amp from the source. So if any one knows about a way of switching the digital out of transporter on when powering on and off when I use the power off button of my ir remote it would be nice if he shared his knowledge. I think it wouldn't be a problem if the tp transmitted audio data via that spdif port since the amp only cares about a signal being present. It doesn't care what signal mostlikely. Re: [slim] Which product should I get?
Well, you need either one of those you mentioned. The have some drawbakcs and pros each being roughly the same device but with slight differences. The all do pandora streaming. But the boom does not stream via spdif neither coaxial nor optical. The transporter is far too expensive if you merely do compressed music streaming formats So remaining are the Squeezebox classic aka squeezebox 3. Or the new and all shiny squeezebox receiver. The latter has no display and though can only be controlled via network. That is to say via squeezebox controler which is a special remote with display to browse music collections from your easy chair. When deciding for a squeezebox receiver you could as well use an iphone or note/netbook to control squeezecenter which in turn controls the squeezebox receiver. The squeezebox classic has a display (bit small though) and an infrared remote like any other hifi unit would have. So it is really up to you. I'd choose a classic / sb3 for it has - infrared remote - vfd display (small) - spdif out optical and coaxial - reasonable dac You say you want to connect to a hifi. Well, then the boom is not for you. It has it's own speakers and amplifier. All products have rca analogue outputs. So they will connect to your amplifier just fine. -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Haven't any clue about the real world user experience with the controller (I am fully blind myself) but a 40 inch lcd is a different story isn't it? Well, basically the guy must have something REALLY exclusive. And if he spends some money on it that really supports the feeling. And ripnas was the first solution I found. Will take a look at Vortexbox. But ripnas is silent and can sit in the same room. Making cd ripping a living room task which would increase to the selling points of the whole system. > > depending on skill level and how automatic it needs to be. > It MUST be fully automatic and as I said the guy doesn't want to even know that he is using a computer. Computers are work music is relaxation. Get the point? Btw.: The Linngui works on a computer which could be connected to that Sony display. What about a Linn DS? Album art browsing? Has any one had the chance to compare sc7 to linngui? It really should be straight forward and cost or brand or even a multitude of features is largely irrelevant. It has to simply work. I like SC7 for it's possibility to be adapted to taste and because it is open source based on standards like html/perl which makes things quite accessible for me. [slim] Logitech being absolutely OTT ?!
Hello, I wonder if the guys over at Logitech are being absolutely mad? Why? Because of pricing changes to the transporter over here in Europe / Germany... Prices are being constant $2000 for the US ONLY they don't ship to Europe anymore. Why? NO explanation just a link to Logitech.com. Where exactly the same unit is priced arround 2500 Euro! I don't have to tell you about currency exchange rates at the moment. I was planning to get a transporter as soon as I could afford it... That is to say a month ago I would have been able to purchase it over in the US and get it shipped to to my door and pay via credit card. That would have been arround 1500 Euro for exchange rates at the moment. Now Logitech one of the big players aquired slimdevices. Good choice would I think although their products are not quite mass market I guess. But Logitech has all the developements Sean Adams and his fellows have put so much work in. Being able to manufacture these units on a bigger basis perhaps maybe the prices would drop and with a big name on them the would eventually reach mass market in Europe... But the oposite is true. The funny thing about this is that with all the developement done the units shouldn't be to expensive to make. I think Slimdevices had their calculations and had areasonable chance to actually refund their developement. Why does logitech make such a difference amongst their customers now. Is it all about !SQUEEZING! the last bit of profit out of a company that was only aquired to disapear in Logithech's drawer's? Why should I just because I happen to live in Europe pay about 150% of the price every body in the US pays??? Anyway, it is your decision. The squeezebox REALLY makes music accessable for blind persons because CDs arn't easyly recognisable if you can't see the covers and the perspective of the possibility to browse a music collection by a web browser actually made me buy a decent hifi thinking to hook up a transporter. But I think you have actually lost a customer. :( I know it's just "take it or leave it" and I shouldn't kikc my can all over the place. But just notice that there might be other potential european customers who arn't too happy. And well, "We will rock you!" But you don't care anyway? To often are good ideas bought ONLY to be thrown into the bin. But perhaps there is an explanation? Perhaps it's just European power suplys that are out of stock? :o -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37308 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Logitech being absolutely OTT ?!
Hi, This is the thread opener speaking. ;) After considering value taxes the price difference at a German dealer in comparision with the former price on the SD web site is about $130 or so. I decided after all to get a transporter from a German dealer and will be looking forward to actually hearing it. I know of the listening test comparing SB3 and Transporter. And yep it is a point made here. Well, the test didn't use symmetric (xlr) interconnects. People state that XLR sound improvement may be a case of "louder sounds better" due to the voltage differences and supposedly the fact that there is the difference between two signals not just between one signal and the noise floor that is actually amplified. Well, I will report on this. Using a Marantz PM-11 and Dali Helicon 400 speakers. And as far as I know my transporter will be labeled "slimdevices"? That's GREAT and VERY IMPORTANT! ;) I speculate that Logitech may drop the squeezebox in favour of their own streaming solution and stick to SD-labeling for the transporter? But will the continue to manufacture them? Well, no one knows! Cheers, Jeronimo PS.: If it turns out to not improve any thing I'll just return the unit and stick to my SB3 and perhaps and good DAC. Re: [slim] CLI rescan question
Hi, Kdf, don't you realise? It is remote! You can't use any scanner.exe on the windows system since it is not there! One could actually run a shell script on the linux machine: #!/bin/bash mainloop { MUSICDIR=$1 SIZEOFMUSICDIR=`du -b` while $SIZEOFMUSICDIR -eq `du -b $1`; do sleep 300; done # Now we can call the scanner.pl! Don't know the code though. } mainloop The idea is to check the size of the folder periodically. When new content gets uploaded the condition of the while statement is no longer true since the saved value of the size of the folder is no longer correct. A rescan is triggered. And the function is called again. Now I have to admit that I do not script in bash regularly. So DON'T EXPECT the code to work. But if you do some debugging the server would look after himself and you would save a double click on a windump machine. Linux can happily look after it's self. It doesn't need Billyboy to be save. ;) And it's as good as sex. -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38524 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I don't quite get what you want to do. You want to broadcast to some friends i.e who are not in your lan. But you want to buy the squeezeboxes? Quite expensive things to give them to friends just to make them hear what you broadcast. But principly that can be done with SB3 and Slimserver. -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38836 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Why is SB so expensive?
If all this is not of much meaning to you why not connect a networked mp3 player of any sort to http://yourslimserver-ip:9000/stream.mp3 Then you can at least listen to the music that is streamed to it. Then get one master SB3 to control the other players with. There are plugins for this. Do a bit of research in the http://wiki.slimdevices.com It might be worthwhile. Or a Nokia n800 or a pda and you could walk through your house just flipping on the player you stand with. They will be listed in a drop down menu as you propably know. Hi, depends what you wanna do really. The SB3 is capable to use squeezenetwork without a server. That means it plays radio streams of all sorts a kints really. If you want to archive your music from cds to a server and listen to them with just some clicks on the remote you need a server running. Re: [slim] Quick question
Yep, well said Peejay. Also you can use softsqueeze to familiarize with the interface of squeezebox once you have Slimserver installed. I use a Thecus N5200 Nas for running SlimServer and it is fine. It has the nice advantage of keeping my data (not only music) safe by raid5. ;) And despite from the fact that I have installed five hard drives it doesn't consume too much power. There are cheaper nas solutions running SlimServer out there however. -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40075 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Attenuation of TP help where are the jumpers?
Yep, read the section in the ownersguide. Problem is it doesn't state where exactly the jumpers a set for 0 -10 -20 -30db. Consequently I don't know if the structures standing out at both sides are jumpers set onto pins or anything else. If the where anything else pulling at them to remove them might not be a good idea. The jumpers are arranged in a left to right sort of way. That means there are two rows of jumpers running from beneath the left channel to the right. -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40099 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Attenuation of TP help where are the jumpers?
Hello, opened my tp yesterday to see where attenuation is located and how it actually works. Now I am blind and found a structure right south to the rca connectors that faintly feels like an ide connector with too few pins. There are two prominent structures to both sides of the pins. I think there are 2 time 5 of such pins. What am I supposed to move and what can I break by pulling at the wrong tiny bits of the mainboard? I need a verbal explanation where exactly the relevant bits are. I could guess but then again I don't want just be trying until I tear something apart. Re: [slim] Attenuation of TP help where are the jumpers?
Hello, Thanks to you both. One question came to me when tinkering arround. What if I set 10 and 20db at the same time for the same channel. Would I get the average i.e 15db for the power traveling across two resistors? I used 20db attenuation and still it would wake my daughter or blow my ears when I turn my amp to 0db. Also strange: tp at -45db and amp set to 0db is not as loud as Amp at -45db and transporter at full volume. Anyway, the reason why I experiment is that I have heard an Audionet poweramp m1v2 recently. It sounded far more alive and present than the Marantz even over xlr. When I bought the tp and the Marantz amp I thought xlr was to be used when it is available. Now I see that this might be a false generalisation for the Audionet m1v2 only has rca connections. I am somewhat confused now. -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40099 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] tp rca vs xlr volume vmrs and power ?
Hello, I wondered how exactly to match tp's xlr to rca volumes: - xlr has 3vrms meaning a sine wave produced via xlr has +-3 volts right? Whereas rca has 2 vrms meaning that the amplitude is by 2/3 lesser than with xlr. This would if for example 36db are twice the loudness of 30db indicate an increase of 3db between xlr and rca. Well, but power and therefore sound presure leves are proportional to the squared voltage. The area below a sine wave of 3 volts amplitude is far bigger than just 50% than a sine wave with 2 volts. So, what is right now? I am not experience in electronics but perhaps someone could enlighten me? -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40613 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] TP + power switch II + Marantz f.c.b.s.
Hello, sometimes I am too lazzy to reach my amp and turn it on or sometimes I forget to turn it off Power switch II seems to be the right plugin for me. When I went into Conrad electronics store to see if I could make myself a relais module I found that it involves some soldering and being blind I am not very comfortable with that way either. However tp has an ir out 1/8" jack and my Marantz PM-11s1 features Marantz flexible control bus system and therefore has the same jack as well. I don't know enough about both components but couldn't I link the two devices via a standard cable i.e 1/8" plugs on each side and make tp turn on the Marantz in one way or an other?
